ChatGPT Atlas no longer exists as a product. OpenAI retired its AI browser on August 9, 2026, a month after announcing it would move browser agent features into the ChatGPT desktop app and Codex. If you want what Atlas offered today, use ChatGPT Work's built in browser, the ChatGPT Chrome extension, or a different AI browser such as Comet.

Atlas was a free macOS browser with ChatGPT in a sidebar and agent mode for Plus, Pro and Business users, but OpenAI retired it on August 9, 2026 and it no longer receives updates. Anyone still looking for it should use ChatGPT Work in the ChatGPT desktop app or the ChatGPT Chrome extension, or switch to Comet or Gemini in Chrome.

What it is
Atlas was a web browser "built with ChatGPT at its core," in OpenAI's words. It put ChatGPT in a sidebar that could see the page you were on, carried your ChatGPT memory, added optional browser memories, and let ChatGPT agent click and type inside your own tabs.
Timeline, from OpenAI's posts and release notes:
- Launch: worldwide on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro and Go users, in beta for Business, and for Enterprise and Edu if an admin enabled it. Windows, iOS and Android were "coming soon."
- Agent mode in Atlas launched as a preview for Plus, Pro and Business.
- July 9, 2026: OpenAI announced it was deprecating Atlas "as we bring browser-based agentic capabilities into ChatGPT and Codex," the same day it launched ChatGPT Work and the new ChatGPT desktop app.
- August 9, 2026: Atlas stopped working.
Windows and mobile versions never shipped.
Pricing explained
Atlas itself never cost anything.
| Item | Price at the time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Atlas browser | $0 | macOS only; Free, Go, Plus and Pro users |
| Agent mode in Atlas | Included with ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month), Pro or Business | Preview, "may make mistakes on complex workflows" |
| Default browser promotion | $0 | Temporary higher rate limits in Atlas for up to seven days; no subscription created |
Today the equivalent spend goes to ChatGPT itself. ChatGPT Work is limited on Free and Go in the desktop app and available on desktop, web and mobile from Plus at $20 per month. Pro runs $100, $200 or $500 per month. Our Atlas pricing page breaks down what each replacement costs.
Key features
Ask ChatGPT sidebar
The sidebar read the page you were viewing so you could ask questions, summarize or draft without copy and paste. A student quoted in OpenAI's launch post described no longer screenshotting slides to ask ChatGPT about them.
Browser memories
If you turned them on, ChatGPT remembered key details from pages you visited and used them later, for example to summarize job postings you had viewed the week before. Memories were optional, viewable and archivable in settings, and deleting browsing history deleted the related memories.
Page visibility toggle
A switch in the address bar decided whether ChatGPT could see a site at all. With visibility off, ChatGPT could not view the page and created no memories from it.
Agent mode
ChatGPT agent working natively in your browser, with your context. OpenAI's examples: find a grocery store, add a recipe's ingredients to a cart and order them; read past team documents, do competitive research and compile a brief. Safeguards OpenAI listed: no running code in the browser, no downloading files, no installing extensions, no access to other apps or the file system, pauses on sensitive sites such as banks so you watch, and a logged out mode that kept the agent away from your signed in sessions.
Parental controls and incognito
ChatGPT parental controls carried over, with new options to turn off browser memories and agent mode. Incognito windows temporarily logged you out of ChatGPT.
What users say
Atlas never had an app store listing with ratings we could cite, since it was a macOS download from OpenAI. Public reaction centered on two things: the macOS only launch, and security. In December 2025 Gartner advised organizations to block AI browsers "for now," naming Atlas and Comet, according to The Register.
Privacy and security
Training. OpenAI said that by default it did not use the content you browsed in Atlas to train its models. You could opt in through "include web browsing" in data controls; pages that opted out of GPTBot were excluded even then. If you had training on for ChatGPT chats, it also applied to chats in Atlas, including page content attached through the sidebar and browser memories.
After retirement. OpenAI's help article says Atlas browser memories are separate from ChatGPT memories, and that deleting ChatGPT chats, uninstalling Atlas or changing ChatGPT memory settings does not delete Atlas specific data such as browser memories and cookies. Use the Privacy Portal or Support for Atlas data requests. If you exported passwords to a CSV to import elsewhere, delete that file after importing because it contains readable passwords.
Prompt injection. OpenAI was unusually direct at launch: agents "are susceptible to hidden malicious instructions" in a webpage or email that could lead to "stealing data from sites you're logged into or taking actions you didn't intend," and its safeguards "will not stop every attack." A later OpenAI post on hardening Atlas described an automated, reinforcement learning trained attacker it built to find injections. One example it found: a malicious email that made the agent send a resignation letter to the user's CEO while it was supposed to draft an out of office reply. OpenAI called prompt injection "unlikely to ever be fully solved."
Those lessons now apply to ChatGPT Work's browser and the Chrome extension, which inherit Atlas's ideas.
Who it is for
Atlas is for no one now. This review is for:
- Former Atlas users who need to know what happened to their data and where to go.
- People researching AI browsers who see Atlas named in older articles and comparisons.
Who should skip it
Everyone, since it no longer runs. If you still have it installed, remove it; it does not receive security updates.
Alternatives
- ChatGPT agent: OpenAI's direct successor, now ChatGPT Work with a built in browser in the desktop app.
- Comet: the closest like for like AI browser, free on four platforms.
- Gemini in Chrome: AI and an agent inside the browser you already use.
- Dia: the security first AI browser for work.

Verdict
Atlas was a solid first try at a ChatGPT browser, with thoughtful privacy controls such as per site visibility and opt in browser memories, but it never left macOS and OpenAI shut it down less than a year after launch to fold its agent into ChatGPT Work. Do not look for it. Move to the ChatGPT desktop app if you want OpenAI's agent, or to Comet if you want an AI browser.
