Tidio is the best AI chatbot for most small businesses in October 2026. It has a free plan, a $29 Starter and Lyro AI from $39 a month, and it learns from your existing website and FAQs. Pick Crisp if you want one flat monthly bill, or Intercom Fin if you would rather pay $0.99 only when the AI actually resolves a question.
Our top picks
How to choose
A small business buys a chatbot for two reasons: answer the same ten questions without you, and catch leads after hours. The bot that wins is the one you can set up this week and afford next year. Rank your options on four things.
- Entry price. Free plans exist (Tidio, Botpress). The cheapest paid tiers with AI are Gorgias Starter at $10 and Freshdesk Growth at $19 per agent billed annually.
- The billing unit at your volume. Per resolution (Fin, ChatBot.com) means you pay when the bot helps. Per conversation (Tidio Lyro, Botpress) or per session (Freshdesk) means you pay for every chat the AI touches. Flat (Crisp) means the bill stays the same until you outgrow the plan's AI credits.
- Setup effort. Tools that scrape your site and FAQs (Tidio, Crisp, Chatbase) are live the same day. Builders (Botpress) take longer because you design the flows.
- The inbox. If two or more people answer customers, pick a tool with a shared inbox or tickets, not only a bot.

What it costs at small business volume
Here is the published math for 300 AI handled chats a month with one or two people on the team, monthly billing unless noted.
| Product | Plan used | Monthly cost at 300 AI chats |
|---|---|---|
| Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent | Growth, one agent, annual billing, 500 sessions once per account | $19 |
| Crisp | Essentials, 10 seats, around 450 automated conversations included | $95 |
| Botpress | Plus, annual billing, 250 included, 50 extra at $0.65 | $182.50 |
| Tidio Lyro | Starter $29 plus Lyro 300 conversation tier $210 | $239 |
| ChatBot.com | Essential, one user, 10 included, 290 extra at $0.99 | $312.10 |
| Intercom Fin | Essential seat $39 plus 290 outcomes at $0.99 (assuming 10 chats go to a human) | $326.10 |
| Gorgias | Basic $60, 300 tickets, 30 AI interactions included, 270 extra at $1.00 | $330 plus ticket overage if humans add more |
Freshdesk looks cheapest on paper, but its price is per agent billed annually, the pricing page does not say whether the 500 included sessions reset monthly, and it lists an Email AI Agent on these plans. Crisp's figure depends on its own estimate of credits per conversation. For a two person team, add a second seat to Intercom ($39), ChatBot.com ($25) and Freshdesk ($19); Crisp, Tidio, Gorgias and Botpress do not charge by seat at this size.
A human answering the same 300 chats at four an hour takes 75 hours. At the BLS median wage of $21.53 an hour for customer service representatives (May 2025), that is about $1,615 in wages before taxes and benefits.
Setup in an afternoon
The fastest path, whichever tool you pick:
- Write or clean up 15 to 30 FAQ answers: hours, pricing, shipping, returns, booking, service area.
- Point the bot at your site and FAQ page. Tidio, Crisp and Chatbase all crawl your site.
- Set the handoff rule: anything about refunds, complaints or a specific order goes to a human.
- Add the widget script to your site or install the Shopify or WordPress app.
- Read the first 50 transcripts and fix the answers that missed.
Which one fits your business
Local service business (plumber, salon, clinic front desk). Your questions are hours, prices, service area and booking. Tidio or Crisp on your website covers it, and Chatbase is worth a look if you want the bot to book through a calendar action. If most of your volume is phone calls, a chatbot is the wrong tool; see our AI receptionists hub.
Small online store. Order status, shipping and returns dominate. Gorgias is built for this and its AI Agent can act on Shopify orders. Tidio is the cheaper route if you sell on Shopify or WooCommerce and mainly need FAQs answered, and its free plan lets you test before paying.
Software startup. Your customers expect fast, accurate answers drawn from docs. Intercom Fin is the strongest agent here, and Intercom's Early Stage program lists 93% off year one if you raised under $10M and have under 15 employees. Chatbase is the budget alternative for a docs trained widget.
Solo founder or one person support. ChatBot.com at $25 per user or Crisp at $45 for 4 seats keeps the bill small and gives you a real inbox. Botpress's free tier works if you are comfortable building flows.
Email heavy support. Freshdesk Growth is the cheapest helpdesk with an AI agent for email at $19 per agent billed annually, with 500 free sessions once per account.
Whichever you choose, start on a monthly plan for the first 60 days, measure how many chats the AI closes without you, and only then switch to annual billing.
Red flags for small teams
- Annual only prices on the headline. Freshdesk and Botpress show annual billing figures. Ask for the monthly price before you commit.
- Branding fees. Chatbase charges $1,188 a year to remove its branding.
- One-time AI quotas. Tidio's free and Starter plans include 50 Lyro conversations once, not every month. You need the Lyro plan for a monthly quota.
- Two meters. Gorgias bills each AI interaction and also counts it as a ticket. Tidio meters human and AI conversations separately.
How we picked
We ranked on published facts only, read from each vendor's pricing page, help center and product pages in October 2026, plus G2 and Shopify App Store ratings with review counts. We did not run the products. For this page we weighted entry price, free plan or trial, and published setup effort more heavily than enterprise features. Full method on how we score. Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI chatbot for a small business?
Tidio is the best starting point for most small businesses: a free plan, a $29 Starter, Lyro AI from $39 a month and setup from your existing website content. Crisp is the pick if you want one flat monthly bill.
Is there a free AI chatbot for small business websites?
Yes. Tidio's free plan includes 50 conversations a month and 50 one-time Lyro AI conversations. Botpress's free tier includes 100 conversations a month with AI usage. Both are enough to test before paying.
How much should a small business pay for an AI chatbot?
At a few hundred chats a month, expect roughly $50 to $350 a month on published prices. Flat plans such as Crisp at $95 are the most predictable; per resolution plans such as Fin at $0.99 scale with use.
How long does it take to set up an AI chatbot?
Tidio describes Lyro setup as minutes, and Crisp as minutes, not months. In practice the work is your content: a clean FAQ and help center pages make the bot accurate, so budget a day to write or tidy them.
Can an AI chatbot work on WordPress or Shopify?
Yes. Tidio, Crisp, Chatbase and ChatBot.com all install with a script or app on WordPress and Shopify. Gorgias and Tidio have Shopify apps rated 4.3 and 4.8 on the Shopify App Store.
Will the chatbot hand off to me when it cannot answer?
All eight picks support handoff to a human. Tidio creates a ticket when Lyro cannot answer, Crisp passes the chat with full context when the AI's confidence is low, and Fin does not bill you when a customer asks for a person.
Do I need a helpdesk as well as a chatbot?
If more than one person answers customers, yes. Tidio, Crisp, Freshdesk, Gorgias and ChatBot.com include an inbox or ticketing. Chatbase and Botpress are bot builders and expect another tool for tickets.
