Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
GitHub Copilot is the better value for most developers: $10 a month, a free tier, unlimited completions, models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and xAI, and agent mode in nearly every IDE. Claude Code wins for long terminal based agent sessions with Claude models, where flat Max plans at $100 or $200 beat paying $0.01 per extra Copilot credit.

The short answer
They overlap on agent work but come from opposite ends:
- Copilot started as autocomplete and grew into chat, agent mode, a CLI, a cloud agent that opens pull requests, and code review, all metered by AI credits except completions.
- Claude Code started as a terminal agent and grew into IDE extensions, a desktop app and a web version, all included in a Claude subscription and metered by a 5 hour window.
Pick Copilot if price, IDE coverage, model choice or GitHub integration matter most. Pick Claude Code if you run long multi file tasks every day and want a flat fee for them. Plenty of developers pay for both.

Prices as listed in October 2026. Copilot's plans page shows monthly prices only.
Light user, one year. Copilot Pro: $120. Claude Pro annual: $200.
Heavy agent user. On Copilot, a month at 25,000 credits is Max $100 plus 5,000 extra ($50) = $150. On Claude, Max 5x is $100 flat, or Max 20x $200 flat. Which gives more agent time depends on model and task size; neither vendor publishes a direct conversion.
Team of 10. Copilot Business: $190 a month. Claude Team Standard: $250 monthly or $200 annually.

Head to head scenarios
Budget developer
Winner: Copilot. Free covers 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests a month, and Pro at $10 is half of Claude Pro with unlimited completions.
Long refactors and migrations every day
Winner: Claude Code. Multi file, multi step work is what it was built for, and Max at $100 or $200 is flat, so a big week does not produce an overage bill. On Copilot, the same week can burn through credits at $0.01 each past your allotment.
Developers who switch IDEs or use Xcode, Eclipse or Visual Studio
Winner: Copilot. Its agent mode runs in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Eclipse and Xcode, plus Neovim and Zed. Claude Code covers VS Code and JetBrains.
Using several labs' models
Winner: Copilot. One plan covers Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and xAI models, so you can use Claude for one task and GPT or Gemini for the next. Claude Code on a subscription is Claude only.
Teams on GitHub
Winner: Copilot. $19 seats with pooled credits, IP indemnity, policy controls, a cloud agent that turns issues into pull requests, and native GitHub.com integration on Enterprise.
Developers who also want a chat assistant
Winner: Claude Code. Claude Pro's $20 covers Claude Code plus the Claude apps with projects, Research and connectors. Copilot Chat is focused on code.
Privacy
GitHub Copilot. GitHub's FAQ says that since April 24 it may use interactions from Free, Pro and Pro+ users (prompts, outputs, code snippets and context) to train models unless they opt out at github.com/settings/copilot/features. GitHub does not use Copilot Business or Enterprise data to train its models. A duplication filter can block suggestions that match public code.
Claude Code. Anthropic asks Free, Pro and Max users to choose a model training setting; with it on, data including Claude Code sessions can be used and kept for five years, and with it off the 30 day retention applies. Team and Enterprise have no training on your content by default.
On individual plans, both require you to check a setting. On business plans, both exclude your data from training.
Verdict
GitHub Copilot is the better choice for most developers and wins four of six scenarios: it is cheaper at every entry point, has a free tier, unlimited completions, four labs' models, the widest IDE coverage and the higher VS Code rating (4.1 from 1,058 against 3.7 from 829). Claude Code wins for heavy agent work and for people who want a Claude chat subscription anyway, where a flat $100 or $200 beats metered credits. If you can spend $30, running both is a common and sensible setup. Full detail in our GitHub Copilot review and Claude Code review.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Code better than GitHub Copilot?
For long, multi step agent work in the terminal with Claude models, Claude Code is the stronger tool and its Max plans give flat pricing for all day use. For most developers on a budget, Copilot is better value: $10 a month, a free tier, unlimited completions, four labs' models and agent mode in more IDEs.
Can I use Claude models in GitHub Copilot?
Yes. Copilot's model list includes Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku and Fable alongside GPT, Gemini, Grok and others, drawn from your AI credits. On Pro+ and Max you can also delegate tasks to third party agents such as Claude.
Which is cheaper?
Copilot at every entry point: Free versus none, Pro $10 versus Claude Pro $20, and Business $19 versus Claude Team $25 monthly. For very heavy agent use the gap narrows, because Copilot bills extra credits at $0.01 each while Claude Max is flat at $100 or $200.
Does Claude Code have autocomplete like Copilot?
Claude Code is built around agentic tasks rather than inline completions. Copilot's code completions and next edit suggestions are unlimited on every paid plan and do not use credits, which is why many developers keep Copilot for completions and use Claude Code for larger tasks.
Which works in more IDEs?
Copilot: VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Eclipse, Xcode, Neovim, Zed and GitHub.com. Claude Code runs in the terminal, VS Code (also installable in Cursor), JetBrains, a desktop app and the web.
Which is better for teams?
Copilot Business at $19 a seat is cheaper and pools 1,900 credits per user across the org, with IP indemnity and policy controls. Claude Team at $25 or $20 annually includes the Claude apps and lets you mix in Premium seats with 5x usage. Neither trains on business data.
Can I use Claude Code and Copilot together?
Yes. A common setup is Copilot for completions and quick chat inside the IDE, and Claude Code in the terminal or extension for refactors and multi file tasks. The two subscriptions total $30 a month at entry level.
