Clara is the best AI answering service for most iPhone users: it runs from an iPhone app, answers unlimited calls for $39.99 a month, and works with your existing number or a new one. If you take fewer than 25 calls a month, Smith.ai's free plan costs nothing, and iPhone's built in Ask Reason for Calling screening already handles unknown callers for free.

We compared seven AI answering services that work on an iPhone, using their pricing pages, App Store listings and help docs as of October 2026. Every price links to its source, and scores follow our rubric.

What your iPhone already does for free

Before you pay for anything, check what iOS handles on its own. Apple added Call Screening in iOS 26, building on Live Voicemail. In Settings, Apps, Phone, the Screen Unknown Callers option has three choices, per Apple:

  • Never. Calls from numbers not in your contacts ring normally.
  • Ask Reason for Calling. The caller is asked why they are calling before your phone rings, and you see their answer.
  • Silence. Unknown callers go straight to voicemail.

Saved contacts always ring through, calls are not screened while roaming, and calling emergency services turns screening off for 24 hours. For a personal phone that mostly gets spam and the occasional delivery driver, this is enough.

What it does not do: answer questions, quote prices, book appointments or text the caller a link. A plumber or realtor whose new customers are by definition unknown callers will lose business if every new lead has to explain themselves to a robot and then wait. That gap is what a paid AI answering service fills.

Android owners have a similar tool. Google's Call Screen on Pixel phones screens automatically in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Ireland, hangs up on detected spam, and shows a transcript of what the caller said, per Google's help page.

How an AI answering service connects to an iPhone

There are two setups, and the choice matters more than the brand.

A new number in an app. Clara, Beside and Quo give you a separate business number inside an iPhone app. Customers call that number, the AI answers when you do not, and summaries land in the app. This is the cleanest option if you want work calls off your personal line, but you have to give customers the new number.

Forward your existing number. Smith.ai, Upfirst, Rosie and RingCentral answer a number they give you, and you forward your iPhone to it. Apple's path for forwarding every call is Settings, Apps, Phone, Call Forwarding; on CDMA carriers Apple says to contact the carrier. To forward only calls you miss or decline, use your carrier's conditional forwarding codes. Most vendors list the codes for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon in their setup screen.

Conditional forwarding is the setup most solo owners want: you answer when you can, and the AI picks up the rest. Test it from a second phone, because carrier behavior varies.

Our picks, in detail

#1 Best iPhone first AI answering app

Clara

Appointment booking
AI scheduling listed; texts booking links; plan not specified
Free trial
7 days on eligible monthly plans

Clara runs from an iPhone app, answers unlimited calls for a flat $39.99 a month ($399 a year), and sets up in under 5 minutes per Clara. You can take a new local Clara number or forward your existing one, and every call gets notes, a summary and spam filtering. It holds 4.6 on the App Store from 1,280 ratings.

Pros

  • Unlimited answered calls for a flat $39.99 a month, so busy months cost the same
  • Native iPhone and Android app with a 4.6 App Store rating from 1,280 ratings
  • Use a new local Clara number or forward your existing number
  • Spam filtering and call summaries on every plan

Cons

  • Live call transfers and text follow ups need the $69.99 Pro plan
  • No named calendar, CRM or field service integrations
  • Supported languages are not published
  • Young product: the app launched in February 2026

Skip it if you need live transfers or text follow ups on the base plan; those start on Clara Pro at $69.99 a month.

4.6 out of 5 from 1,280 reviews on App Store (October 2026).

#2 Best free start, with a human fallback

Smith.ai

AI receptionist billed per answered call, with a free 25 call plan and an optional network of live North America based receptionists behind it.

3.8

$0 per month
Minutes or calls included
25 calls free; 75 to 500 calls on paid tiers
Appointment booking
Yes, AI scheduling with Calendly and other calendars on all plans
Free trial
Free plan with 25 calls per month

Smith.ai's free plan answers 25 real calls a month with AI, then charges $3.00 per call, so a light personal or solo line can cost nothing. It is the only pick that can hand a call to a live North America based receptionist, and it books into Calendly and other calendars on every plan.

Pros

  • Free plan with 25 real calls a month, so you can run it on live traffic before paying
  • Escalation to live North America based receptionists when the AI should not handle a call
  • Native Clio, HubSpot and Salesforce integrations, plus Zapier and Make
  • Spam calls from a list of 20 million+ known numbers are filtered and not billed
  • Recording, transcription, summaries and lead qualification on every plan

Cons

  • Per call rates of $1.60 to $3.00 are two to four times what Upfirst charges at similar volume
  • Live agent calls cost extra per call, and that rate is not on the AI pricing page
  • Volumes above 500 calls are quote only
  • Six month term plans are non refundable, and Trustpilot reviewers describe disputes over exactly that

Skip it if you take 100+ calls a month; per call billing climbs to about $212 at that volume where Clara stays at $39.99.

4.3 out of 5 from 375 reviews on Trustpilot (October 2026).

#3 Best second work number on iPhone

Beside

Second business number app for iPhone and Android with an AI receptionist, call transcripts and summaries.

3.7

30 AI answered calls on Baseline; unlimited on Unlimited
Appointment booking
Helps with bookings, per Beside; calendar names not listed
Free trial
7 days on Unlimited (card required)

Every call and voicemail is transcribed and summarized with suggested next steps. It has the strongest App Store record here: 4.8 from 9,176 ratings.

Pros

  • Local business number in the app, so work and personal calls stay apart
  • Every call and voicemail transcribed and summarized with suggested next steps
  • 4.8 App Store rating from 9,176 ratings, the strongest record of the phone first apps
  • Up to 20 seats share one line on the web plans

Cons

  • Baseline caps AI answered calls at 30 a month
  • Booking, transfer and language details are not spelled out
  • Unlimited costs $99 a month, more than Clara's unlimited plan
  • Trial on Unlimited needs a payment method and auto bills

Skip it if you take more than 30 calls a month and want to stay cheap; Baseline caps AI answered calls at 30, and Unlimited is $99.

4.8 out of 5 from 9,176 reviews on App Store (October 2026).

#4 Lowest cost per call when you forward your iPhone

  • Calendar booking on every plan, including Clio, Calendly, Acuity and Square
  • 35+ languages with automatic switching when the caller changes language
  • 14 day free trial and 20% off for annual billing

Cons

  • No review listing with 10 or more reviews that we could find, so less public proof than Smith.ai
  • No staffed human backup; transfers go to your own phones
  • HIPAA BAAs only on custom plans above 600 calls
  • Native CRM list is short beyond Clio; most CRMs go through Zapier

Skip it if you want a dedicated iPhone app; Upfirst works by forwarding your number, and we found no App Store listing for it.

#5 Best business phone app with AI built in

Quo Sona

Sona, the AI agent built into the Quo business phone system, answering after hours and overflow calls from $19 per user per month.

3.5

  • Paid tiers fall to $0.45 per call at 600 calls, with a usage cap

Cons

  • Sends booking links instead of booking directly into a calendar
  • Three languages, no switching mid call
  • Seat price and Sona tier are two separate charges

Skip it if you want to keep calls on your existing cell number; Sona only answers numbers inside Quo.

4.4 out of 5 from 10,814 reviews on App Store (October 2026).

#6 Most minutes for longer calls

Rosie

AI answering service billed by the minute, from $49 for 250 minutes, built for home service and local businesses.

3.4
Starting price

Minutes or calls included
250, 1,000 or 2,000 minutes
Appointment booking
Google Calendar and Calendly on Scale and up; text booking links on Professional
Free trial
7 days, no credit card

Rosie's $49 plan includes 250 minutes, which suits callers who talk for 3 or 4 minutes, and it trains itself from your website and Google Business Profile. English and Spanish come on every plan, and there is a 7 day trial with no card.

Pros

  • $49 for 250 minutes is the lowest cost per included minute on a published plan in this group
  • English and Spanish on every plan
  • Trains itself from your website and Google Business Profile
  • Can run for after hours or overflow only through conditional call forwarding
  • Native iOS and Android apps

Cons

  • Calendar booking and live transfers need the $149 Scale plan

  • Thin review record: 3.5 on the App Store from 11 ratings and no Trustpilot reviews

Skip it if you want direct calendar booking under $149 a month, or a strong app record; its App Store rating is 3.5 from 11 ratings.

3.5 out of 5 from 11 reviews on App Store (October 2026).

#7 Best for callers in several languages

RingCentral's AI Receptionist speaks English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese and switches mid call, from $49 a month for 100 minutes. The RingCentral iPhone app holds 4.8 from 78,019 App Store ratings, and booking works with Google and Outlook calendars.

  • States customer data is not used to train its AI models; HITRUST certified

  • Extra minute bundle prices are not published
  • RingCentral scores 1.7 on Trustpilot from 2,013 reviews, with complaints about cancellation and billing
  • No staffed human backup

Skip it if you take long calls; at $0.50 per extra minute, 300 minutes costs $149.

4.8 out of 5 from 78,019 reviews on App Store (October 2026).

What it costs

Here is what each service costs at two volumes a solo owner or small team is likely to see, using the cheapest published plan on monthly billing.

Service Billing unit 30 calls a month 100 calls a month
Smith.ai Per call $15 (25 free plus 5 at $3.00) $212.50 (Pro 75 plus 25 at $2.50)
Beside Flat, capped $29 (Baseline, 30 AI calls) $99 (Unlimited)
Upfirst Per call $24.95 (Starter, 30 calls) $69.95 (Premium 90 plus 10 at $1.00)
Clara Flat, unlimited $39.99 $39.99
Quo Sona Seat plus calls $44 ($19 seat plus $25 Sona 40) $68 ($19 seat plus $49 Sona 100)
Rosie Per minute $49 (250 minutes) $49 (250 minutes, if calls average 2.5 minutes)
RingCentral Per minute $49 (100 minutes) $99 (100 minutes plus 100 at $0.50, at 2 minutes a call)

Two reading notes. Per minute plans depend on how long your calls run: 100 calls at 4 minutes each is 400 minutes, which pushes Rosie to its $149 plan. And annual billing cuts several of these: Clara to $33.25 a month, Upfirst by 20%, Beside's in app plan to $199.99 a year.

For bigger volumes, see how much an AI receptionist costs or run your own numbers in the cost calculator.

Personal use vs business use

For a personal line, the free iOS screening covers most needs. Turn on Ask Reason for Calling, add the numbers that matter (school, doctor, family) to your contacts, and leave it there. If you also want an AI to take detailed messages, Smith.ai's free plan does it without a monthly fee.

For a side business on your personal phone, pick an app with a separate number (Clara or Beside) so customers never get your personal number, and so you can turn the business line off on weekends.

For a small business run from an iPhone, pick on booking and integrations. Upfirst and Smith.ai write appointments into real calendars, and Smith.ai can pass a tricky call to a human. If the whole team needs a phone system, Quo gives each person a number and adds the AI on top.

Red flags

  • Capped plans that look unlimited. Beside's $29 Baseline answers only 30 calls a month with AI. Check what happens on call 31.
  • Booking only on higher tiers. Rosie sends booking links on $49 and books directly from $149. Clara lists AI scheduling but not which plan includes it.
  • Number lock in. Quo Sona and Beside answer only their own numbers. If you later leave, ask whether you can port the number out.
  • Thin app records. Rosie's App Store score is 3.5 from 11 ratings. Clara's app launched in February 2026. Run the trial on real calls.
  • Recording consent. Every service here transcribes calls. Some states require all party consent, so add a line to your greeting.

How we picked

We started from the services people search for when they want AI to answer an iPhone or cell number, then kept the ones that publish a price and either ship an iPhone app or connect by call forwarding. For each, we opened the pricing page, product pages and App Store listing and recorded only what those pages say. We did not place test calls, so we do not grade voice quality; use each free plan or trial for that. Factors and weights are on how we score, and the full field is in best AI receptionists.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an AI answering service for iPhone?

Yes. Clara and Beside are iPhone apps with a built in AI receptionist, and services such as Smith.ai, Upfirst and Rosie answer your existing iPhone number through call forwarding. iPhone also has free built in screening that asks unknown callers why they are calling before the phone rings.

Can my iPhone answer calls with AI for free?

Partly. iOS call screening is free: set Screen Unknown Callers to Ask Reason for Calling and the iPhone asks unknown callers why they are calling before it rings. It does not answer questions or book appointments. For that, Smith.ai's free plan covers 25 calls a month.

How do I forward my iPhone calls to an AI receptionist?

For all calls, open Settings, Apps, Phone, Call Forwarding and enter the number the AI service gives you. For only missed or busy calls, use your carrier's conditional forwarding code, which most AI vendors list in their setup screens. If your carrier runs a CDMA network, Apple says to contact the carrier.

What is the best AI answering service for personal use?

Start with the free iPhone screening, which handles spam and unknown callers. If you want a voice that answers and takes messages for a personal or side business line, Smith.ai's free 25 call plan or Clara at $39.99 for unlimited calls are the simplest paid options.

Does AI call answering work on a cell phone number?

Yes. Any cell number that supports call forwarding can send calls to an AI receptionist. You keep the number, and you can forward every call, only after hours calls, or only calls you do not pick up.

Will the AI answer when my iPhone is on Do Not Disturb?

With unconditional forwarding, the carrier sends calls straight to the AI, so your phone state does not matter. With conditional forwarding on no answer, calls you let ring out go to the AI. Test both setups with a second phone before relying on either.

Is Live Voicemail the same as an AI answering service?

No. Live Voicemail shows a live transcript while a caller leaves a message, and Call Screening asks unknown callers for a reason before the phone rings. Neither answers questions, books appointments or follows up, which is what an AI answering service does.

Which iPhone AI answering app has the best reviews?

Among the apps here, Beside has the strongest App Store record at 4.8 from 9,176 ratings, and Clara has 4.6 from 1,280. RingCentral's app scores 4.8 from 78,019 ratings, but that covers its whole phone system, not just the AI receptionist.
