ChatGPT Atlas was free, and now it is gone. OpenAI's browser cost nothing on macOS, and its agent mode came with ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month, Pro or Business. OpenAI retired Atlas on August 9, 2026. The same capabilities now live in ChatGPT Work, which is limited on Free and Go and fully available from Plus at $20 per month.

What Atlas cost
| Item | Price | Who could use it |
|---|---|---|
| Atlas browser | $0 | Free, Go, Plus and Pro users on macOS; Business in beta; Enterprise and Edu if enabled |
| Ask ChatGPT sidebar and browser memories | $0 | Any signed in user, subject to their ChatGPT plan limits |
| Agent mode in Atlas | Included with Plus ($20 per month), Pro or Business | Preview |
| Default browser promotion | $0 | Up to seven days of higher rate limits in Atlas; no subscription or charge |
Atlas usage counted against your ChatGPT plan, so a Free user had Free limits inside Atlas and a Pro user had Pro limits.
What the same features cost now
OpenAI's retirement note says it is bringing "a more capable browser experience to ChatGPT, including multiple tabs, downloads, improved navigation, and account login support," and points to the ChatGPT desktop app and the ChatGPT Chrome extension.
| ChatGPT plan | Price | ChatGPT Work access |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited, desktop app only |
| Go | $8 per month (may include ads) | Limited, desktop app only |
| Plus | $20 per month | Desktop, web and mobile |
| Pro 100 | $100 per month | Longer Work sessions, Dot always on agent |
| Pro 200 | $200 per month | More included usage than Pro 100 |
| Pro 500 | $500 per month | Highest usage plus Ultrafast models |
The ChatGPT browser extension, which brings tab mentions and browser tasks into Work and Codex, works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi, subject to your plan and workspace settings.
What each limit means in practice
Work shares one allowance with Codex. OpenAI publishes estimates rather than fixed counts: on Plus, 15 to 160 local messages every five hours with GPT-6.1 Sol, and 350 to 3,000 with GPT-6 Luna. Pro plans currently have no five hour limit. The older agent mode help article lists 40 agent messages per month on Plus and 400 on Pro. Once you hit a limit on Plus or Pro, you can buy credits instead of upgrading.
Hidden costs
- Lost data. Bookmarks, tabs, history and cookies did not transfer automatically. If you did not export before August 9, OpenAI says recovery is not guaranteed.
- Pro 200 allowance change. New Pro 200 subscribers get a lower allowance than before; grandfathered users keep the old allowance through October 29, 2026.
- Fast modes. Fast mode uses your allowance 2.5x faster, and Ultrafast on Pro 500 uses it 8x faster.
Business and Enterprise workspaces
Atlas was in beta for Business and only available to Enterprise and Edu members if a plan administrator enabled it, so most companies never paid anything extra for it. OpenAI's retirement guidance tells workspace admins to share the retirement article, help members move to an approved browser and update internal docs that still mention Atlas. For agent work inside a workspace, Work's access depends on the role permissions your admin sets, and Business, Enterprise and Edu plans do not train on business data by default.

Frequently asked questions
Was ChatGPT Atlas free?
Yes. The browser was free on macOS for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users, in beta for Business, and for Enterprise and Edu if an admin enabled it. Agent mode inside Atlas needed a paid plan.
Did Atlas agent mode cost extra?
No separate fee. Agent mode in Atlas launched as a preview for ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Business subscribers and was included in those plans.
Can I still pay for Atlas?
No. OpenAI retired Atlas on August 9, 2026. There is nothing to buy, and the default browser promotion that gave temporary higher limits did not create a subscription or charge.
What does the Atlas replacement cost?
OpenAI points to ChatGPT Work in the ChatGPT desktop app and the ChatGPT browser extension. Work is limited on Free and Go ($8 per month) in the desktop app, and available on desktop, web and mobile on Plus ($20) and Pro ($100, $200 or $500).
What is the cheapest Atlas alternative?
Comet from Perplexity, which is free with an assistant that acts on websites. Gemini in Chrome chat is also free; its auto browse agent needs Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month.
