What an AI sales development rep actually does, how it differs from a sequencing tool, what it costs on published and buyer reported prices, and where it falls short.

An AI SDR is software that does a sales development rep's top of funnel work: it finds prospects, researches them, writes and sends personalized email and LinkedIn outreach, answers replies and books meetings for your human reps. Published prices run from $1.50 per prospect (AiSDR) to $800 a month (Reply.io's Jason), and enterprise tools like 11x sell annual contracts.

What an SDR does, and what the AI takes over

A human sales development rep spends most of the day on five jobs. Here is how much of each an AI SDR handles today.

SDR task What the AI does How much it covers
Build a target list Searches a B2B database by title, industry, size, tech and signals Most of it
Research each prospect Reads company news, hiring posts, LinkedIn and the website Most of it
Write first touch and follow ups Drafts personalized emails and LinkedIn messages Most of it, with your review early on
Send and manage sequences Sends from warmed mailboxes on a schedule, rotates senders All of it
Handle replies and book Answers simple replies, handles objections, books into a calendar Some of it; complex replies go to a person
Cold calls Rarely; AI calling is a separate tool Little

How it works

  1. You define the ideal customer. Titles, industries, company sizes, regions, technologies and buying signals such as funding or hiring.
  2. It pulls leads. From its own database (AiSDR lists 300M+ leads, Instantly 450M+, Reply.io a database it sizes at 1 billion contacts) or from yours.
  3. It researches. Company news, job posts, tech stack, LinkedIn activity and website content.
  4. It writes. One message per prospect, using that research and your positioning, in your rep's name.
  5. It sends. Through mailboxes on your domains, usually with warmup and sending limits to protect deliverability. AiSDR sells warmed mailboxes at $33 a month each.
  6. It replies. Answers questions, handles simple objections and offers meeting times. Interested replies get routed to a human.
  7. It syncs. Writes activity into HubSpot or Salesforce.

What it costs

Product Pricing as listed or reported Basis
AiSDR $1.50 per person prospected Pay as you go, campaigns from $7.50
Instantly with AI Sales Agent $94 a month Starter bundle 5,000 emails, 1,500 lead credits
Reply.io Jason AI SDR $800 a month, $500 on annual 1,000 active contacts, 2 LinkedIn accounts
Amplemarket $600 a month, annual term 2 users, data and Duo Copilot
Artisan Quote only Team plan about 2,500 leads a month
11x Quote only; Vendr median $65,100 a year Buyer reported, not published

To put AiSDR's rate in context: 1,000 prospects a month is $1,500. The real comparison is cost per booked meeting, which depends on your list, offer and deliverability, so run a small paid campaign before committing to an annual contract.

Where AI SDRs fall short

  • Deliverability. Sending at volume from new domains lands in spam. Warmup, sending limits and clean lists matter more than the AI's writing.
  • Generic personalization. "Saw your company is hiring" at scale reads as automated. Review messages early and tighten the prompts.
  • Data quality. Apollo's 1,369 Trustpilot reviews average 3.1, with outdated contacts a repeated complaint; the same risk applies to any AI SDR database.
  • Complex replies. Pricing questions, technical objections and procurement belong with a person.
  • Compliance. CAN-SPAM applies to B2B email and you stay liable for what the AI sends, so keep the opt out link and your address in every template.
  • Contracts. TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that 11x sold one year contracts with a three month break clause. Ask for a pilot.

AI SDR vs AI cold caller vs sequencer

  • Sequencer (Instantly, Smartlead, lemlist): you build the list and write the copy; it sends at scale cheaply.
  • AI SDR (AiSDR, Jason, Artisan, 11x): it builds, researches, writes, sends and replies.
  • AI cold caller (Retell, Bland, Vapi): a voice agent that phones prospects, which carries consent rules under the TCPA. See best AI cold calling agents.

Who should use one

An AI SDR fits a B2B team with a clear ideal customer, a deal size that justifies outbound, and at least one person to take the meetings it books. It fits poorly if you sell to consumers, have no defined market, or cannot keep a domain healthy. Ranked picks with prices: best AI SDR tools.

Frequently asked questions

What does an AI SDR do?

It finds prospects that match your ideal customer profile, researches each one from company news, hiring data and the web, writes personalized emails and LinkedIn messages, sends them from your mailboxes on a schedule, answers replies and books meetings into a rep's calendar. A human SDR then works the booked meetings and hot replies.

How much does an AI SDR cost?

Published prices range from $1.50 per person prospected on AiSDR's pay as you go plan to $800 a month for Reply.io's Jason AI SDR Starter ($500 on annual). Enterprise products like 11x and Artisan are quote only; Vendr reports an 11x median contract of $65,100 a year.

Can an AI SDR replace a human SDR?

It can replace much of the list building, research and first touch writing, and it never stops sending. It does not replace judgment on complex deals, live phone conversations or relationship building. Most teams use it to give each human rep more qualified conversations, not to cut the role entirely.

What is the difference between an AI SDR and an email sequencer?

A sequencer such as Instantly or Smartlead sends emails you wrote to a list you built. An AI SDR also builds the list, researches each prospect, writes each message and handles replies. Some sequencers now sell an AI SDR layer on top, like Instantly's AI Sales Agent.

Do AI SDRs make phone calls?

Mostly no. AI SDRs focus on email and LinkedIn; AiSDR adds phone through Aircall, and Amplemarket lists a Duo Voice agent on higher tiers. AI voice platforms that dial prospects are a separate category with their own legal rules under the TCPA.

What is the best AI SDR?

It depends on budget and channel. AiSDR is the most flexible on price at $1.50 per prospect, Reply.io's Jason covers email plus LinkedIn from $800 a month, and Amplemarket bundles a data platform from $600 a month for 2 users. Full rankings are in our best AI SDR guide.

Is AI SDR outreach legal?

Cold email in the US falls under CAN-SPAM, which has no exception for business to business email, per the FTC. You need accurate header information, subject lines that match the content, a physical address and a working opt out honored within 10 business days, and fines run up to $53,088 per violating email. The sender is liable even when an AI tool sends it. Rules are stricter in the EU and Canada.
