How to choose

Most servers do not need ten bots. They need one general bot plus a few specialists for gaps. Decide in this order:

  1. Pick one general bot. This handles moderation, automod, welcome messages, reaction roles and custom commands. Dyno, MEE6, Carl-bot and Sapphire are the main choices. Pick by what you will not pay for: Dyno gives free automod and tickets, MEE6 gives the easiest dashboard but keeps most plugins on Premium, Carl-bot gives free reaction roles at scale, Sapphire gives everything free except leveling.
  2. Fill the leveling gap. If your general bot keeps leveling paid (Dyno and Carl-bot do), add Arcane for free XP and 15 role rewards.
  3. Add security if you are public. Servers with open invites, giveaways or crypto topics attract raids. Wick's free tier adds anti nuke, join gates and captcha.
  4. Add tickets if members need help. Dyno and MEE6 include tickets; for claiming, transcripts and many panels, use Ticket Tool or Tickets.
  5. Add fun last. Music (Jockie Music), games (Dank Memer) and stats (Statbot) are for active social servers.

Three checks before you invite any bot: the permissions it asks for, whether it uses a web dashboard or commands you have to learn, and whether its premium is per server or per user.

Statbot 30 day stats $8.97 per month bundle Multi month discounts Server

Prices from each bot's premium page or Patreon in October 2026. The Price Index tracks them all.

A $0 stack that covers most servers: Dyno (moderation, automod, tickets, forms) plus Arcane (leveling) plus Wick (security) plus Jockie Music (music). That is four free bots and no subscriptions.

A paid stack for a big community: Dyno Premium yearly ($59.99) for alerts and unlimited modules, Arcane yearly ($75) for voice XP, Wick Premium ($60 a year at $5 a month). Total $194.99 a year for three specialists, about what MEE6 Premium costs on monthly billing at list price ($167.88) for one bot.

Per server vs per user premium

This trips people up. Utility bots like Dyno, MEE6, Carl-bot, Arcane, Wick and Ticket Tool charge the server owner per server. Music and game bots like Jockie Music and Dank Memer sell premium to individual users, who then apply perks (boosts or premium server slots) to a server. That means any member can upgrade your server's music bot without you paying. Carl-bot is a hybrid: Patreon tiers give the buyer movable server slots.

Server counts, explained

Bots publish install numbers, and they disagree with top.gg. MEE6 says more than 21 million servers, top.gg shows 19.5M. Carl-bot's site says 15,342,752, top.gg shows 3.4M. Treat these as rough popularity signals, not quality scores, and weigh ratings with their review counts more.

Bot Servers per its own site Servers on top.gg top.gg rating

Red flags

  • Fake invite links. Only invite a bot from its official site or a verified listing. Copycat bots with similar names are a common scam.
  • Bots asking for Administrator without a reason. Security bots like Wick need it; a meme or music bot does not.
  • Promotional pricing that never ends. MEE6's page shows a countdown and 50% off; renewals return to list price. Do the math on the renewal.
  • Music bots promising YouTube. Several big bots dropped YouTube; check the bot's own source list.
  • Paywalled basics. If the feature you need is behind premium in one bot, another usually gives it free (leveling in Arcane, claiming in Tickets).
  • Dead bots. Some old favorites are gone or pivoted. Hydra's site is now a roles and welcome bot, and FredBoat's site returned a server error when we checked in October 2026.

How we picked

We started from the bots people search for and compare most, and the top bots on top.gg by category. For each we opened the official site, premium page or Patreon, docs and top.gg listing in October 2026, and recorded free limits, every premium price, server counts and top.gg ratings with review counts. Rankings weigh free tier depth and coverage of what most servers need first, then premium value per server, ease of setup and trust signals. We compared published facts and did not install or test the bots. Scores follow our method.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Discord bot?

Dyno is the best all round Discord bot for most servers: free automod, tickets, forms and reaction roles, a web dashboard and premium from $49.99 a year. MEE6 is the easiest to set up and has the most social alert sources, and Sapphire is the best if you want everything free.

What are the must have Discord bots?

Most servers need one general bot (Dyno, MEE6 or Sapphire), a leveling bot if the main bot does not cover it free (Arcane), and depending on size, a security bot (Wick) and a ticket bot (Ticket Tool or Tickets). Add a music bot like Jockie Music and a game like Dank Memer for social servers.

Are Discord bots free?

Almost all popular Discord bots are free to add and use, with optional premium tiers. Premium usually runs $5 to $14 a month per server. Sapphire has no feature paywall at all.

What is the most popular Discord bot?

MEE6, which says it is used by more than 21 million servers, and shows 19.5M on top.gg. Rythm shows 19.7M on top.gg, Dyno 11.6M, ProBot 10.2M and Jockie Music 10.1M. Carl-bot's own site claims 15.3 million servers.

How many bots should a Discord server have?

As few as cover your needs, usually two to four. Every bot adds permissions to manage and commands for members to learn. Start with one general bot, then add specialists only for gaps like leveling, tickets or security.

How do I add a bot to my Discord server?

You need the Manage Server permission. Open the bot's official site or its top.gg listing, click Invite or Add to Discord, choose your server, review the permissions and authorize. Then configure it on the bot's dashboard or with its commands.

Are Discord bots safe?

Established bots are generally safe, but every bot can do what its permissions allow. Invite bots only from their official site or verified listing, grant only the permissions they need, and keep bot roles below your admin roles. Security bots like Wick need Administrator by design.

What is the best free Discord bot?

Sapphire, because every feature is free and it rates 4.83 on top.gg from 218 reviews. Dyno's free tier is the best among bots that also sell premium.

Do Discord music bots still work?

Yes, but many no longer play YouTube. Jockie Music, FlaviBot, Rythm and Green-bot are active in October 2026; check each bot's supported sources before you rely on YouTube links. See our [best Discord music bots](/best-discord-music-bots).
