Gemini is the best AI assistant for Android in October 2026 because it is now built in: Google replaced Assistant with Gemini on Android phones starting September 4, 2026, so it answers the power button and works across Gmail, Docs and Chrome, free. Add ChatGPT as a second app; it rates 4.8 on Google Play from 65.2 million reviews.
Our top picks
How to choose
On Android, the question is no longer which assistant to install. Gemini is already there. The question is whether to add a second one, and which.
Keep Gemini for the phone. It is the only assistant here with system level access on Android: long press the power button or say Hey Google and it opens over any app. It also reaches into Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar and Chrome. Its free plan is generous, with Deep Research, Gemini Live voice conversations and image generation.
Add a second app for the thinking work. ChatGPT for the widest tool set and the best user ratings, Claude for long documents and code, Perplexity for answers with sources.
Match your work apps. Google Workspace users get the most from Gemini AI Pro at $19.99, which also bundles 5 TB of storage. Microsoft 365 users get Copilot inside Office from $9.99.
Check your phone. Phones that cannot run Gemini kept their existing Assistant for now, per Google. Most phones sold in the last few years run Gemini.

What changed with Google Assistant
Google first planned to move Android users from Assistant to Gemini in 2025, then extended the timeline into 2026. It announced the final schedule in August 2026, and the switch began on September 4, 2026.
- Phones and tablets: Assistant is gone. Gemini opens with the power button, corner swipe or Hey Google, and the Gemini app no longer offers "Switch to Google Assistant."
- Paired devices: Wear OS watches, compatible earbuds and Android Auto moved to Gemini too.
- Not changed yet: Google Nest and Google Home speakers and displays, and cars with Google built in, per Google's notice and Chrome Unboxed's report.
- Known gaps: Some users report tasks Assistant handled that Gemini struggles with, such as navigating to a contact's address in Android Auto. Treat those as anecdotes, but test your own routines.
Full detail in Gemini vs Google Assistant.
Changing your default assistant
Android lets you pick the app that opens when you invoke the assistant. On most phones the setting is under Settings, Apps, Default apps, Digital assistant app; Samsung and other makers name the menus slightly differently. Only apps that register as assistants appear in the list. If you switch away from Gemini, you lose its system shortcuts but keep the Gemini app.
Red flags
- Fake AI apps. Google Play search returns many "AI chat" apps with weekly subscriptions. Check the developer: Google LLC, OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity AI, Microsoft Corporation, Meta Platforms.
- DeepSeek on your phone. DeepSeek's Android app rates 3.7 from 345,000 reviews and stores data in China, per its privacy policy discussed in our DeepSeek review. Avoid it for anything sensitive.
- Character apps posing as assistants. Companion apps such as Character.AI rate 2.2 on Google Play from 2.45 million reviews. They are not productivity tools.
- Routines that broke in the switch. If you relied on Assistant routines in the car or on a watch, test them now that Gemini handles them.
How we picked
We started from the AI assistants leading Google Play charts and the results for best AI assistant for Android, and kept general assistants with at least 500,000 Google Play reviews or a built in role on Android. We do not test apps ourselves. Ranked order is the best fit for most Android owners. Method: how we score. iPhone owners: see best AI app for iPhone.
