Yes. AI answers phone calls in three ways: free call screening built into iPhone and Pixel phones, which asks unknown callers why they are calling; AI receptionists, which answer business calls in full, book appointments and take messages from about $25 a month; and voice agent platforms that developers use to build custom phone agents for $0.06 to $0.14 a minute.
1. Built in screening on your phone
iPhone. Apple added Call Screening in iOS 26, building on Live Voicemail, and it ships free on iPhone 11 and later. In Settings, Apps, Phone, the Screen Unknown Callers setting has three options:
- Never: unknown numbers ring normally.
- Ask Reason for Calling: the caller is asked why they are calling before your phone rings, and you see the reply.
- Silence: unknown numbers go straight to voicemail.
Contacts always ring through. Apple notes calls are not screened while roaming, and calling emergency services pauses screening for 24 hours. iOS 26 also added Hold Assist, which waits on hold for you and alerts you when a live agent picks up.
Android. Google's Call Screen on Pixel phones can screen automatically in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Ireland. It asks who is calling and why, hangs up on detected spam, and rings you with a summary. You can also tap Screen call manually and pick suggested replies. Google says it runs on the device and keeps transcripts on the phone. Manual screening works on selected non Pixel phones in the US and Canada.
What screening does not do: it does not answer questions, take a detailed message for a business, book an appointment or follow up. A new customer who is asked to explain themselves to a robot may hang up and call a competitor. Screening is built for spam, not for customer service.
2. AI receptionists for businesses
An AI receptionist answers the call fully. It greets the caller with your business name, answers questions from what you taught it, books into your calendar, takes messages, transfers urgent calls and sends you a summary. You forward your existing number to it, for every call or only the ones you miss.
| Option | Price as listed, October 2026 | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Smith.ai free plan | $0 for 25 calls, then $3.00 each | AI answering, booking, live receptionist add on |
| Upfirst | $24.95 for 30 calls | Booking, 35+ languages, spam not billed |
| Rosie | $49 for 250 minutes | English and Spanish, trains from your website |
| Clara (iPhone app) | $39.99, unlimited calls | App based, new number or forwarding |
| RingCentral AI Receptionist | $49 for 100 minutes | Six languages with mid call switching |
These are the right tool for owners who miss calls on the job, offices that book appointments, and anyone whose after hours calls go to voicemail today. Rankings: best AI receptionists. For phone first apps: best AI answering service for iPhone.
3. Voice agent platforms
Developers and larger teams build their own phone agents on platforms such as Retell AI, Vapi and Bland. You choose the language model and voice, write the call flow and connect phone numbers. Published rates run about $0.06 (Telnyx) to $0.14 (Bland) per minute all in. These handle both inbound and outbound calls, such as reminders and lead follow up. Comparison: best AI voice agents.
How good is AI at answering calls
On routine calls (hours, prices, booking, directions, job status, taking a message) current AI receptionists handle the conversation well, and they answer every call at once. They struggle with:
- Unexpected questions you did not cover in setup
- Upset or emotional callers
- Noisy lines and heavy accents, where transcription errors creep in
- Long, multi step intake with exceptions
The fix is a clear transfer rule: anything the AI cannot handle goes to a person, or to a hybrid service like Smith.ai that has live receptionists on standby.
Is it legal
AI answering your own calls is legal. Two rules matter. First, recording consent: some states require every party to agree to a recording, so add a one line disclosure to the greeting. Second, outbound calls: on February 8, 2024 the FCC ruled that AI generated voices are artificial voices under the TCPA, so AI calls to cell phones and homes generally need prior express consent.
Which option fits you
- Personal phone with spam problems: turn on Ask Reason for Calling (iPhone) or Call Screen (Pixel). Free.
- Solo business on your cell: an app with its own number (Clara) or a cheap forwarding plan (Upfirst at $24.95, Smith.ai free).
- Small business with booked appointments: a full AI receptionist that writes into your calendar. Start with what an AI receptionist is and the free options.
- High volume or custom workflows: a voice agent platform.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI answer my phone calls for me?
Yes. On an iPhone, Call Screening asks unknown callers why they are calling before your phone rings, and on a Pixel, Call Screen does the same and can hang up on spam. For a business line, an AI receptionist answers fully, books appointments and takes messages, from free (Smith.ai, 25 calls) to about $25 to $50 a month for entry plans.
How do I turn on AI call screening on iPhone?
Open Settings, then Apps, then Phone, find Screen Unknown Callers and choose Ask Reason for Calling. Calls from numbers not in your contacts are asked why they are calling before your phone rings. Choose Silence instead to send them to voicemail.
Does iPhone call screening answer questions for callers?
No. It asks for a name and reason and shows you the answer so you can decide whether to pick up. It does not answer questions, quote prices, book appointments or follow up. That is what a paid AI receptionist does.
What is Live Voicemail on iPhone?
Live Voicemail, in iOS 17 and later, shows a live transcript on screen while a caller leaves a message, so you can pick up mid message. Apple's Call Screening in iOS 26 builds on it by collecting a caller's details before the phone rings.
Can Google Assistant answer my calls?
On Pixel phones, Call Screen answers unknown or suspicious calls, asks who is calling and why, and rings you with a summary, or hangs up on spam. Manual screening is also available on selected non Pixel Android phones in the US and Canada, per Google.
Can AI answer calls for my business?
Yes. An AI receptionist answers your business number 24/7, answers common questions, books appointments into your calendar, takes messages and transfers urgent calls. You keep your number by forwarding it to the service.
Can AI make phone calls too?
Yes. Voice agent platforms such as Retell, Bland and Vapi place outbound calls for reminders, lead follow up and surveys. Since February 2024 the FCC treats AI voices as artificial voices under the TCPA, so most such calls need prior consent.
Is it legal for AI to answer my calls and record them?
Answering is legal. Recording and transcribing can require consent: some states require all parties to agree to a recording. A short disclosure in the AI's greeting covers most businesses, but check your state's law.
