Our top picks
How to choose
"AI agent" covers very different products. Sort them by the job you want done.
General agents take any goal and figure out the steps: ChatGPT Work, Manus, Perplexity Computer, Genspark Super Agent and Claude. Pick by output. ChatGPT Work and Genspark are strongest on office files, Manus on parallel research and media builds, Perplexity on cited research, Claude on long documents and code.
Browser agents act inside your browser with your logins: Gemini in Chrome auto browse and the browser side of Comet, Claude in Chrome, Manus Browser Operator and ChatGPT's extension. Best for bookings, shopping and forms. See the best AI browsers.
Workflow agents run the same job again and again on triggers: Lindy for inbox, calendar and CRM, Zapier for anything across 9,000+ apps. Best for business routines.
Then check four things:
- Billing basis. Flat fee (ChatGPT, Claude), credits (Manus, Genspark, Lindy), daily task caps (Gemini) or activities (Zapier). Credit agents can cost more than the sticker price on hard tasks.
- Concurrency. Manus publishes 20 tasks at once on paid plans; most others do not publish a number.
- Integrations. ChatGPT lists 1,400+ plugins, Lindy 1,500+ tools, Zapier 9,000+ apps.
- Privacy. Look for training opt outs, takeover modes for passwords and admin controls.

The going rate for a general agent is about $20 a month. Heavy tiers jump to $100 to $500 on ChatGPT Pro, $167 on Perplexity Max (annual) and $249.99 on Genspark Pro. All figures are on the Price Index.
Agents vs chatbots vs automation
A chatbot answers. An agent acts: it plans, uses tools, checks its own work and asks before it does something risky. Automation runs a fixed recipe on a trigger. The lines are blurring. ChatGPT Work runs event triggered tasks, Zapier Agents reason about which step to take, and Lindy behaves like an assistant on staff. The practical test is simple: if the job changes every time, use a general agent; if it repeats, use Lindy or Zapier, which are cheaper per run and easier to audit.
Security and privacy
Any agent that reads the web or your email can be targeted by prompt injection. OpenAI's help center describes an agent looking for a dinner spot that reads a malicious comment telling it to fetch a password reset code from Gmail and send it to an attacker. Google's auto browse help page lists similar examples and says you are responsible for the agent's actions, including purchases. Brave demonstrated working attacks on the Comet and Opera Neon browsers in 2025, and Gartner advised companies in December 2025 to block AI browsers for now, according to The Register.
What the vendors offer:
- OpenAI: takeover mode that keeps passwords out of screenshots, confirmations on high impact actions, Lockdown Mode, training opt out on personal plans, no training on business data by default.
- Google: plan review before auto browse starts, take over for payments, terms and account creation, sign in through Password Manager without sharing passwords with Gemini.
- Manus and Genspark: training opt out on Team plans; Manus requires authorization for each Browser Operator session.
- Lindy: SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, HIPAA and PIPEDA listed.
Rules for any agent: connect only the apps a task needs, prefer a cloud or logged out browser for research, approve actions on signed in sites, and never give a prompt like "handle everything in my inbox."
Red flags
- Credits with no usage history. If you cannot see what each task cost, you cannot budget.
- No confirmation before sending, buying or deleting.
- No training opt out on the plan you are buying.
- Ownership or product churn. Atlas was retired within a year and Manus unwound an acquisition. Keep copies of your work.
Setup tips for your first agent
Start with one task you already do every week, such as a research brief or a status report, and write the prompt as you would brief a new hire: the goal, the sources to use, the format you want and what it must not do. Run it once while you watch. Then schedule it, and check its usage history after a week so you know what it really costs.
How we picked
We ranked general purpose agents for consumers and professionals on published facts as of October 2026: entry price and billing basis, capabilities, published limits and concurrency, integrations, privacy and security controls, and verified ratings such as App Store and Trustpilot scores. Every figure comes from vendor pricing pages, help centers, app stores and reporting linked in the sources and in each tool's spec sheet. We do not claim to have used these products. Scoring is explained on how we score. Coding agents are ranked separately in the best AI coding agents, and business focused agents in the best AI agents for small business.
