Dia wins. ChatGPT Atlas was retired on August 9, 2026, and Dia is still shipping on macOS and Windows with a SOC 2 Type II report and the most careful agent design of any AI browser. Atlas was cheaper and had the more capable agent, but that no longer matters. Pick Dia for work; pick ChatGPT Work if you wanted Atlas for OpenAI's agent.

The short answer

  • Pick Dia for an AI browser at work with strong security paperwork.
  • Pick ChatGPT Work in the desktop app if you want what Atlas agent mode did.
  • Pick Comet if you want a free AI browser with an agent that acts across sites.

Head to head scenarios

Knowledge work across Slack and Notion

Winner: Dia. Context search across work tools and synthesis into shareable reports are its core features.

Agent that books, shops and fills forms across sites

Winner: neither; use ChatGPT Work or Comet. Atlas did this but is gone, and Dia deliberately blocks its agent from navigating to other sites.

Company rollout

Winner: Dia. SOC 2 Type II, MDM controls, org wide content sharing off and an enterprise tier. Atlas was only in beta for Business when it was retired.

Budget users

Winner: neither. Atlas was free but no longer works. Dia's AI now costs money. Comet is free.

Regulated data

Winner: neither. Dia says it is not HIPAA compliant and offers no BAA. Atlas carried no such commitments either.

Privacy

Atlas did not train on browsed content by default, kept browser memories optional and let you hide any site from ChatGPT. Atlas data still sitting with OpenAI is handled through its Privacy Portal.

Dia stores conversations, history, bookmarks and files encrypted on your device by default, encrypts sync end to end and bars its AI partners by contract from retaining or training on your data. Dia uses some content data, unlinked from your account and deleted after 30 days, unless you turn it off.

Agent risk. Dia assumes prompt injections will happen and limits the damage: no following AI generated links, no write actions without review, no irreversible actions, no navigation to other sites, password fields hidden from the agent. OpenAI's approach in Atlas was safeguards plus logged out mode, with a warning that its defenses would not stop every attack. Dia's design answers Gartner's December 2025 concerns about rogue agent actions more directly.

Migration from Atlas to Dia

Atlas data did not transfer automatically. If you exported a bookmarks HTML file before August 9, 2026, import it into Dia like any Chromium browser. Passwords exported to CSV can be imported too; delete the CSV afterward because it holds readable passwords. Then set up Dia profiles for work and personal browsing, connect only the work tools you need, and start the 14 day Better Days trial to judge whether the Morning Brief and reports justify $100 per month or whether Better Answers is enough.

Which one had the better ideas

Atlas's best ideas were the per site visibility toggle in the address bar and opt in browser memories you could view and archive. Dia's are encrypted local storage, a contractual no training clause with its model providers and an agent that cannot leave the page you approved. Atlas optimized for capability, Dia for containment. With Atlas gone, Dia is the browser that carries the privacy minded approach forward.

Cost over a year

Atlas plus ChatGPT Plus for agent mode came to $240 a year. Dia's Better Answers comes to $120 a year at the plan card price or $240 at the FAQ price, and Better Days to $1,200 a year.

Verdict

Dia wins as the surviving product and the safer one. It is the AI browser we would give to a team that lives in Slack and Notion. It is not a replacement for Atlas's roaming agent; for that, former Atlas users should use ChatGPT Work or Comet. Compare Comet vs Dia or see all Atlas alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dia better than ChatGPT Atlas?

Yes, today, because Atlas was retired on August 9, 2026. Even before that, Dia was the stronger pick for work security, while Atlas had a more capable agent tied to ChatGPT.

Which was cheaper?

Atlas. The browser was free and its agent came with ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month. Dia's browser is free without AI, and AI plans show $10 or $20 for Better Answers and $100 for Better Days.

Is Dia a good replacement for Atlas on Mac?

For work use, yes: it is on macOS, pulls context from Slack, Notion and Google Workspace and has the strongest published security controls. If you want an agent that books and buys for you, Comet or ChatGPT Work fit better.

Which models does Dia use?

Dia's security FAQ lists GPT through OpenAI on Azure, Claude through Anthropic, Vertex and AWS, and Gemini through Vertex. Atlas used OpenAI's ChatGPT models.

Which was safer from prompt injection?

Dia by design. Its agent cannot navigate to other websites, will not open AI generated links and shows drafts before inserting anything. OpenAI said Atlas's safeguards would not stop every attack and recommended logged out mode.

Did either train on my browsing?

Atlas did not use browsed content for training by default. Dia's model partners are contractually barred from retaining or training on your data; Dia uses some unlinked content data for 30 days to improve the product unless you turn it off.
