Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
ChatGPT is the best all round AI assistant for most people in October 2026. It has the widest tool set in one app, a usable free plan and a $20 Plus plan that unlocks GPT-6, agents and coding. The tradeoff is plan sprawl: five personal price points, model names that change often and caps that apply even on the $200 Pro tier.

ChatGPT is the broadest assistant on the market: the widest tool set, five consumer price points and the largest review base of any AI app. The tradeoff is plan sprawl, since the strongest models and agents sit behind Plus or the $100 to $500 Pro tiers and the cheap Go plan carries ads.

What it is
ChatGPT is OpenAI's general purpose AI assistant. You type or talk, and it writes, explains, summarizes, analyzes files and data, generates images, searches the web and runs multi step tasks through agents. It runs on the web, on desktop and on iOS and Android, and it is the most installed AI assistant in our coverage, with 11.4 million App Store ratings in October 2026.
OpenAI sells it in two lines. Personal plans (Free, Go, Plus and Pro) are for individuals. Workspace plans (Business and Enterprise) add shared projects, admin controls and data protections for companies. The same app serves both, so the experience for a solo user and a team member looks alike.
The product has grown well past chat. Plus now includes a Work agent that acts across apps and files, and Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. Pro adds always on agents called Dots. That breadth is the main reason ChatGPT stays at the top of our best AI assistants ranking.
Pricing explained
| Plan | Price | Model in Chat | Notable limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | GPT-5.6 Luna | Unlimited everyday text chat; separate caps on uploads, images, voice and data analysis |
| Go | $8 per month | GPT-5.6 Luna | More messages, images, memory and voice; may include ads |
| Plus | $20 per month | GPT-6 (Medium and High thinking) | Work agent, Codex, 20 GB storage, no ads |
| Pro | $100, $200 or $500 per month | GPT-6 incl. Extra High, GPT-6 Pro | Weekly allowances on GPT-6 Pro; 100 GB storage |
| Business | $25 per seat monthly, $20 annually | GPT-6, GPT-6 Pro | Teams of 2 to 200; premium seats $125 or $100 |
| Enterprise | Contact sales | Per workspace settings | Compliance API, retention controls, 24/7 SLA support |
The jump that matters for most people is Free to Plus. Free is generous for text, but it stays on the smaller Luna model. Go at $8 is the budget middle: more volume, same model, and ads. Plus is the cheapest plan with GPT-6.
Pro is three usage tiers of one plan. OpenAI's help center is explicit that Pro "does not include unlimited use" of GPT-6 Pro. On the $200 tier, hitting the weekly GPT-6 Pro allowance drops you to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium. On the $100 tier, GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro share one weekly pool.
For teams, a Business seat at $20 on annual billing costs the same as Plus and adds SSO and the no training default. A ten person team pays $2,400 a year on annual billing or $3,000 on monthly. The full math, with premium seats, is in ChatGPT pricing.
Against rivals, ChatGPT sits on the market price. The BestBots AI Price Index lists the median seat plan among major assistants at $19.99, a cent under Plus.
Key features
Models and thinking levels
Plus gets GPT-6 in Chat at Medium and High thinking. Pro adds an Extra High level and GPT-6 Pro, which OpenAI describes as powered by GPT-6 Astra. Free and Go users can still press Think for harder questions, but it runs on GPT-5.6 Luna. The naming (Sol, Luna, Terra, Astra) is hard to follow, and it changes often, so check the model picker rather than relying on old guides.
Work agent
Plus and higher include Work, an agent that acts across apps and files: it can pull from connected email and calendar, build documents and carry a task through several steps. Plus also gets GPT-6 Astra inside Work. This is the feature that most separates paid ChatGPT from Free.
Codex for coding
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. Plus and higher get full access; Free and Go get the GPT-5.6 Terra model in Codex. For developers who already pay for Plus, Codex reduces the need for a separate coding tool, though dedicated coding agents still offer deeper IDE integration. See best AI coding agents.
Images, voice and files
Image generation is on every plan with plan limits, and Plus lists higher quality image creation. Voice chats are available on Free with limits and more on Go and up. File uploads and data analysis work on Free with caps. Plus raises storage to 20 GB and Pro to 100 GB.
Connectors and memory
ChatGPT connects to email and calendar on Plus, and Business adds connectors to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365. Memory carries preferences across chats, and Go and higher raise memory capacity. Projects group files and chats, and Plus lists larger projects.
Business admin
Business adds SAML SSO, MFA, central billing, usage analytics, spend controls and workspace agents. Enterprise adds the Compliance API, data retention controls and 24/7 support with SLAs.
What users say
ChatGPT has the largest review base of any assistant we cover:
| Source | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | 4.8 | 11.4 million |
| G2 | 4.6 | 3,109 |
| Trustpilot | 1.3 | 1,260 |
The spread is the story. App Store users, who rate the app in the moment, score it near the top of the category. G2 reviewers, who are mostly business users, rate it 4.6, level with Claude. Trustpilot is a complaint channel: 84% of reviews there are one star, and the recurring themes are billing disputes, slow or automated support, accounts deactivated without a clear reason, and usage limits that are hard to predict.
Recurring praise across sources centers on breadth: one app for writing, images, voice, data and coding. Recurring complaints center on the parts around the model: support access, billing and limits. That matches what the plan structure suggests. If you pay, keep receipts, use monthly billing first and learn where the limits sit for your plan.
Privacy and security
OpenAI's pricing page states that Business does not train on business data by default, and Enterprise adds retention controls and the Compliance API for audit. Business also includes SAML SSO and MFA.
On personal plans, the defaults are different. Treat your chats as data held by OpenAI that may be used to improve models unless you change your data controls in settings. If you handle client data, contracts or health information, use a workspace plan rather than a personal one, and check OpenAI's current data controls before uploading anything sensitive.
The Go plan's ads are a privacy consideration too. OpenAI lists that Go may include ads; Plus and above do not. If you do not want an ad supported experience, Go is the plan to skip.
Who it is for
- Most people who want one assistant: writing, research, images, voice and light coding in one app.
- Students, writers and marketers: Plus covers drafting, editing, image work and research at $20.
- Small teams: Business at $20 per seat on annual billing adds SSO and the no training default for the same price as Plus.
- Developers who want chat plus a coding agent: Codex is included on Plus.
Who should skip it
- Google Workspace households: Gemini's AI Pro at $19.99 bundles 5 TB of storage and Gemini in Gmail and Docs. See Gemini review.
- Office heavy workers: Microsoft 365 Premium puts Copilot inside Word, Excel and Outlook. See Microsoft Copilot review.
- Researchers who need sources on every claim: Perplexity cites every answer inline. See Perplexity review.
- Long document and coding specialists: Claude has a context window up to 1M tokens and includes Claude Code on every paid plan. See Claude review.
- Anyone on a strict budget who wants a paid tier: Mistral Vibe Pro is $14.99. See Le Chat review.
Alternatives
- Claude: same $20 entry price, $17 on annual billing, stronger fit for long documents and coding. Compare in ChatGPT vs Claude.
- Gemini: $19.99 with 5 TB storage and Google app integration. Compare in ChatGPT vs Gemini.
- Microsoft Copilot: AI inside Office apps. Compare in ChatGPT vs Microsoft Copilot.
- Perplexity: cited answers and model choice.

Verdict
ChatGPT earns its spot as the default assistant on published facts. It has the broadest feature set, a free plan with unlimited everyday text chat, and a $20 Plus plan that adds GPT-6, the Work agent and Codex. Business seats match Plus on annual billing and add the controls a company needs.
Where it falls short is everything around the model. Plans and model names are hard to track, Go carries ads, Pro still has weekly caps, and support complaints dominate Trustpilot. Start on Free, move to Plus when you hit the model ceiling, and only consider Pro after a few weeks of hitting Plus limits.

Gemini4.5Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT worth paying for?
For daily use, yes. Plus at $20 per month is the cheapest plan with GPT-6, the Work agent and Codex, and it removes ads. If you only ask a few questions a day, Free covers it, since everyday text chat on Free is unlimited subject to abuse safeguards.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth it over Go?
Go at $8 raises message, image and voice limits but keeps the smaller GPT-5.6 Luna model and carries ads. Plus at $20 moves you to GPT-6 and adds agents, coding and 20 GB of storage. If quality of answers matters more than volume, Plus is the better buy.
Is ChatGPT Pro worth $200?
Only for heavy users who hit Plus limits every week. Pro starts at $100, and OpenAI's help center says even Pro does not include unlimited use of GPT-6 Pro. Start at the $100 tier and move up only if you run out.
Is ChatGPT safe to use for work?
On Business and Enterprise, OpenAI does not train on your data by default and adds SAML SSO and admin controls. On personal plans, treat chats as data a vendor holds, check your data controls in settings and avoid pasting confidential client material.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Plus and Business?
Plus is a personal plan at $20 per month. Business is a shared workspace at $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually, with SSO, connectors to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365, central billing and no training on business data by default.
Does ChatGPT have ads?
The Go plan at $8 per month may include ads, according to OpenAI's pricing page. Plus and higher plans list no ads.
What are the best ChatGPT alternatives?
Claude for long documents and coding, Gemini for Google Workspace users and storage value, Microsoft Copilot for Office users, and Perplexity for cited research. See our full list of ChatGPT alternatives.
Why is ChatGPT rated so low on Trustpilot?
Trustpilot shows 1.3 from 1,260 reviews, mostly complaints about billing, support and usage limits. App Store ratings tell a different story at 4.8 from 11.4 million ratings. Trustpilot attracts people with account problems, so read it as a support signal rather than a quality score.
