Khanmigo is the best AI tutor for US families with school age kids. It tutors with questions and hints instead of answers, runs on Khan Academy's courses, lets parents read every chat, and costs $4 per month for up to 10 children. Skip it if you live outside the US or want fast answers.

By Khan Academy

Khanmigo is the best AI tutor for kids and families: $4 per month covers up to 10 children, parents can read every chat and get alerts on flagged content, and it is free for teachers. The tradeoffs are that it only sells to adults with a US billing address and it is built around Khan Academy content, so it is slower than an answer app when you just want a solution.

What it is

Khanmigo is an AI tutor and teaching assistant from Khan Academy, the education nonprofit behind the free video lessons and practice exercises many US students already use. Khan Academy describes it as able to help with "almost any academic subject," naming math, science, coding, history and humanities, for students from elementary school through college.

It is not a general chatbot with a school skin. Khanmigo is designed to guide a student toward an answer rather than give it: it asks what the student tried, points at the next step and checks understanding. It also includes writing and debate practice with feedback, coding feedback, career coaching and, on the family plan, college admissions coaching.

There are three ways in: a $4 per month subscription for a learner 18+ or a family, free teacher tools, and paid District Tools that bring Khanmigo to a whole school system.

Prices as listed on khanmigo.ai in October 2026, before sales tax. Annual billing saves $4 a year.

What the price means in practice. A family with one child pays $44 per year on annual billing. A family with three children pays the same $44, about $14.67 per child per year. A homeschool co op parent with 10 children under one account pays the same again. Most single learner study apps charge that much or more per month: Gauth Plus is $11.99 per month and Speak Premium is $17.99 per month on the App Store.

Hidden costs. None listed beyond sales tax. There is no published free trial for families, and no published refund policy on the pricing or parent pages. For a full breakdown see Khanmigo pricing.

Key features

Socratic tutoring

Khanmigo's core behavior is holding back the answer. Ask it to solve a problem and it asks what you think the first step is, then responds to what you say. This is slower than a photo solver like Photomath, and that is the point: the student does the thinking.

Khan Academy content underneath

The tutor sits on top of Khan Academy's course library, so a student working through a lesson can ask for help on that exact exercise. That makes it stronger as a structured learning tool than as a homework app for a worksheet from a different curriculum.

Parent dashboard and chat history

The family plan gives parents about 20 tools from a Parent Dashboard, including assigning work, tracking progress and reviewing chat history. Parents can read their child's Khanmigo conversations and get alerts for flagged content. No other AI tutor we compared offers full chat review to parents.

Writing and debate practice

Khanmigo offers guided writing and debate prompts with feedback. It is built to coach a student through an argument or essay rather than write it, which suits teachers and parents worried about AI written homework.

Coding feedback and career coaching

The learner and family plans include real time coding feedback and career coaching. The family plan adds college admissions coaching, which overlaps with what some families pay a private counselor for.

Free teacher tools

Teachers get standards aligned lesson planning, learning objectives, rubrics, exit tickets, summaries of student work and content refreshers at no cost. Teachers cannot grant students access, though; classroom use comes through district deals.

What users say

Khanmigo's own site cites an overall 4 star rating from Common Sense Media. The Khan Academy app, which Khanmigo works inside, rates 4.6 on the App Store from 112,447 ratings.

Khan Academy's Trustpilot page is far lower, 2.1 from 173 reviews, and the company has not invited reviews there, so the sample skews toward complaints. Recurring complaints are about the wider Khan Academy experience: long, boring lessons, strict grading of answers and an outdated website. One September 2026 reviewer said Khanmigo and Khan Academy did not help them with Algebra I. Praise centers on well structured, free and methodical material.

The pattern to take away: students who want quick answers get frustrated with a tutor built to slow them down, while parents and teachers value exactly that.

Privacy and security

Who can sign up. Subscribers must be 18 or older, live in the US and have a US billing address. Children under 18 need a parent or guardian to add them. Teachers cannot enroll students.

Children's data. Khan Academy's privacy policy has a Children's Privacy Notice for users under 13. For accounts a child creates, it seeks consent from a parent or guardian; when a school uses the service, the school provides consent, which matches the FTC's COPPA guidance that schools may consent for educational use only. Parents can modify or delete child accounts.

Ads and selling data. The policy says Khan Academy does not sell personal information and does not show third party advertising, and it avoids tracking technology on child directed pages.

AI model training. For AI features provided to schools, Khan Academy says its agreements with AI model providers do not permit them to train models on input data. It also advises users not to enter personal information into AI features. The policy does not give a separate retention period for chat data; data is kept only as long as needed to provide the service.

Who it is for

  • Parents of K to 12 students who want a tutor that will not do the homework for their child, and who want to see the chats.
  • Homeschool families, who get assignment and progress tools and one price for up to 10 children.
  • Teachers, who get planning and grading help free.
  • Adult learners in the US who want a patient, structured tutor for math, science or coding at $4 per month.

Who should skip it

  • Families outside the US. Subscriptions require a US billing address.
  • Students who need fast answers to check a worksheet. Use Photomath or Gauth.
  • Teens and adults who want a general assistant. ChatGPT with Study mode is free and covers any topic.
  • Language learners. Khanmigo is not a language app; see Speak.
  • Students whose school curriculum is far from Khan Academy's, since the tutor works best inside its own lessons.

Alternatives

  • ChatGPT: free Study mode with guiding questions and quizzes for teens 13+ and adults, plus linked teen parental controls.
  • Gemini: free Guided Learning with diagrams and quizzes; parents can enable it for under 13s through Family Link.
  • Synthesis Tutor: K to 5 math for ages 5 to 11, Family plan listed at $119 per year.
  • Photomath: free step by step math from a photo.
  • Brainly: live human tutors on the Tutor plan at $29.99 per month.

Verdict

Khanmigo is the AI tutor we would set up first for a US child. The price is the lowest in the category per child, the teaching style protects against the copy the answer habit, and the parent dashboard gives a level of visibility no general chatbot offers. Its limits are real: US only, tied to Khan Academy's content, and slower than an answer app by design. For teens and adults who want a free, flexible tutor, ChatGPT Study mode or Gemini Guided Learning are strong complements.

Frequently asked questions

Is Khanmigo worth it?

For families with school age kids in the US, yes. $4 per month covers up to 10 children, it tutors with hints instead of answers, and parents can read every chat. It is less useful if you want instant answers or your child's coursework does not line up with Khan Academy subjects.

How much does Khanmigo cost?

$4 per month or $44 per year for an individual learner 18+ or for a family, with up to 10 children per parent account. Teachers use it free. District pricing is by request. Sales tax is not included.

Is Khanmigo free?

Khanmigo is free for teachers who sign up. Students and parents pay $4 per month or $44 per year, unless their school district has licensed Khanmigo District Tools, in which case access comes through the school.

Is Khanmigo safe for kids?

It is the most parent visible AI tutor we have compared. Children under 18 can only join through a parent, parents can review chat history and receive alerts on flagged content, and Khan Academy says it does not sell personal information or show third party ads. Khanmigo still advises users not to enter personal information into AI features.

What ages is Khanmigo for?

Khanmigo is designed for students from elementary school through college. Kids under 18 are added by a parent or guardian; adults 18+ can subscribe for themselves.

Can students sign up for Khanmigo through a teacher?

No. Teachers get free tools for themselves but cannot give students access. Students reach Khanmigo through a parent subscription or a school district that has bought District Tools.

Is Khanmigo available outside the US?

Parent and learner subscriptions require a US residence and a US billing address. Free teacher access is offered in other eligible countries and territories.

Khanmigo or ChatGPT: which is better for tutoring?

Khanmigo is better for kids: it is built around Khan Academy lessons, gives parents chat review and costs $4 per month. ChatGPT's free Study mode is more flexible for teens 13+ and adults on any topic, and ChatGPT is not allowed for children under 13.
