Khanmigo is the best AI tutor for most students: it teaches with questions and hints instead of handing over answers, covers school subjects from elementary through college, and costs $4 per month for a parent and up to 10 kids. For teens and adults, ChatGPT Study mode and Gemini Guided Learning are the best free tutors.
Our top picks
How to choose
An AI tutor and an answer app look alike on a phone screen. They are not the same product. Sort your options on five questions.
- Does it teach or does it answer? Khanmigo, ChatGPT Study mode and Gemini Guided Learning are designed to hold back the final answer and ask the student to take the next step. Photomath, Gauth, Mathway and Brainly lead with a worked solution. Both have a place, but only the first group builds skill when a student is left alone with it.
- Who is the learner? Age rules differ sharply. Khanmigo accepts kids under 18 when a parent adds them. Gemini can be turned on for under 13s through Family Link. ChatGPT requires 13+, with parent permission under 18. Claude requires 18+. Pick from the tools your child is allowed to use.
- What subject? General assistants cover everything. Photomath and Mathway are math only. Speak, Praktika, ELSA Speak and Duolingo are for languages. Synthesis Tutor is K to 5 math only.
- Can a parent see what happens? Khanmigo shows parents the full chat history and sends flagged content alerts. ChatGPT's linked teen accounts let parents set quiet hours and turn features off, but not read chats. Most homework apps list no parent controls at all.
- What does it cost per child? Khanmigo is $4 per month for up to 10 children. Single learner apps like Speak ($17.99 per month) or Gauth Plus ($11.99 per month) cost more per kid.

Prices as listed by each vendor or on the US App Store in October 2026. A family with three school age kids pays $44 per year for Khanmigo. The same family would pay about $300 per year for three Gauth Plus accounts at $99.99 each. Every assistant's price is tracked in the Price Index.
AI tutor vs answer app
The most important split in this category is how the product behaves when a tired student just wants to be done.
Tutors hold back. Khanmigo is built to guide students to answers rather than give them. ChatGPT's Study mode, per OpenAI, runs on instructions written with teachers and learning science experts and uses Socratic questions, hints and quizzes. Gemini's Guided Learning breaks problems into steps and checks understanding with quizzes. These are the right default for a student working alone.
Answer apps solve first. Photomath, Gauth, Mathway, Brainly and Chegg turn a photo into a worked solution in seconds. They are useful for checking finished homework or seeing how a method works, and they are easy to misuse. If your student uses one, set a rule: try the problem first, then compare steps.
Source grounded tools sit in between. Gemini Notebook answers only from the material you give it and cites the passage, which makes it strong for reviewing readings, lecture slides and study guides, and weak for learning something new from nothing.
Kids, teens and privacy
AI tutors collect what children type and photograph, so the rules matter as much as the features.
COPPA. The US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act covers apps directed to children under 13, and general audience apps that know they are collecting data from under 13s. Operators generally need verifiable parental consent before collecting a child's personal information, according to the FTC. Schools can consent on a parent's behalf only when the data is used for the school's educational purpose, not for the company's own commercial use such as behavioral advertising. The FTC amended the COPPA Rule on April 22, 2025.
Age rules by product, from each vendor's terms or store listing:
| Product | Minimum age | How kids get access | Parent visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khanmigo | Subscriber 18+ | Parent adds up to 10 children under 18 | Chat history and flagged content alerts |
| ChatGPT | 13+ | Parent permission required under 18 | Linked teen controls, no chat reading |
| Gemini | 13+ on own account | Under 13 through Family Link | On or off switch, email on first use |
| Claude | 18+ | Not available to minors | None |
| Gemini Notebook | Rated 13+ on the App Store | School or Family Link accounts | Through Google account controls |
| Speak | Minors only with parent supervision | Parent agrees to terms | None listed |
| Gauth | Purchases require 18+ | App rated 4+ | None listed |
Data and ads. Khan Academy says it does not sell personal information and does not show third party ads, and that its AI model providers serving schools may not train on input data. Photomath's App Store label lists collected data as not linked to the user. Gauth's label links contact info, photos, user IDs and usage data to the user, and Gauth is owned by ByteDance, TikTok's parent, as reported by Axios and WIRED. ChatGPT lets parents of linked teens turn off model training on their teen's chats.
Red flags
- No age rules in the terms. If an app aimed at students says nothing about users under 13, assume it was not built for them.
- Answer first by default with no tutor setting. Fine for checking work, a problem as the main study tool.
- Many unlabeled prices. Gauth, Praktika and ELSA Speak each list around ten different App Store prices. Check the price in the app, and cancel trials a day early.
- Billing complaints. Duolingo scores 1.6 on Trustpilot from 8,209 reviews, mostly about unexpected renewals. Brainly reviewers report renewal charges with no refunds.
- Claims of guaranteed grade gains. No published evidence backs a promise like that for any app here.
How we picked
We compared AI tutors and study apps on the facts each company publishes: plan prices and limits, subjects, age requirements, parent controls, privacy policies and App Store privacy labels, plus ratings with review counts from the App Store and Trustpilot. Teaching approach (tutor first or answer first) carried the most weight, then age fit and parent visibility, then price per learner. We did not use the apps with children. Scores follow the BestBots method. Rankings are editorial; no company paid for placement.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI tutor?
Khanmigo is the best AI tutor for most students. It guides with questions instead of giving answers, covers math, science, coding, history and writing from elementary school through college, and costs $4 per month for a whole family. ChatGPT Study mode and Gemini Guided Learning are the best free options for teens and adults.
Is there a free AI tutor?
Yes. ChatGPT's Study mode is available on the Free plan, Gemini's Guided Learning is free in the Gemini app, Gemini Notebook is free with up to 50 sources per notebook, and Photomath's step by step math explanations are free. Khanmigo is free for teachers but costs $4 per month for students and families.
Is Khanmigo better than ChatGPT for tutoring?
For kids, yes: Khanmigo is built around Khan Academy lessons, refuses to just give answers, lets parents read chats and costs $4 per month. ChatGPT Study mode is more flexible for older teens and adults on any topic, but ChatGPT requires users to be 13+ with parent permission under 18.
Can AI replace a human tutor?
For practice, explanations and homework checks, an AI tutor covers a lot for a fraction of the price. It cannot notice a child's frustration the way a person can, and every AI tutor can still make mistakes. Apps like Brainly Tutor and Gauth Plus add human experts when the AI is not enough.
What is ChatGPT Study mode?
Study mode is a ChatGPT setting that works through problems step by step with guiding questions, hints and quizzes instead of giving the answer. OpenAI lists it on Free, Plus, Pro and Team. Open it from the tools menu by choosing Study and learn, and parents of linked teen accounts can make it the default.
What is Gemini Guided Learning?
Guided Learning is a mode in the Gemini app, launched August 6, 2025, that breaks problems into steps, asks open ended questions and adds images, diagrams, videos and quizzes. Teachers can share a Guided Learning link in Google Classroom.
Are AI tutors safe for kids?
It depends on the app. Khanmigo lets parents read every chat and sends flagged content alerts, and Gemini can be enabled for under 13s through Family Link. ChatGPT requires 13+, Claude 18+, and Speak bars minors without supervision. Check each app's age rules and privacy label before you sign a child up.
What is the best AI tutor for college students?
ChatGPT Study mode or Gemini Guided Learning for explanations in any subject, Gemini Notebook for studying from your own readings with citations, and Chegg Study for textbook solutions in engineering and science courses.
