What it is
Gemini is Google's AI assistant. It lives in its own app and website, in the Gemini side panel inside Gmail, Docs and other Google apps, in Chrome and on Android phones. It handles chat, writing, research, image and video generation, voice conversations and coding.
Google sells consumer Gemini through the Google AI plans, which also include Google One storage. Business customers buy a separate product, Gemini Enterprise. Developers use Google AI Studio and the Gemini API. This review covers the consumer plans and notes where business options differ.
Pricing explained
| Plan | Price | Model access | Storage and extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Flash-Lite | 15 GB; images, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99 per month | Flash, 2x Free usage; Gemini 4 Argon listed | 400 GB; 200 Flow credits, video, Gemini in Gmail and Vids |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 per month | Gemini 4 Argon, Pro and Flash, 4x usage | 5 TB; 1,000 Flow credits, Jules, Chrome auto browse, YouTube Premium Lite |
| Google AI Ultra | $99.99 or $199.99 per month | Highest access, 5x or 20x AI Pro | 20 TB and up; 10,000 or 25,000 Flow credits, Project Genie, YouTube Premium |
| Gemini Enterprise Business | From $21 per seat per month | Business models | Up to 300 seats, 25 GiB pooled per seat |
| Gemini Enterprise Standard and Plus | From $30 per seat per month | Higher usage | Unlimited seats, VPC-SC, CMEK, data residency |
AI Pro is the plan to compare. At $19.99, it is a cent under ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro, and it includes 5 TB of storage, which Google otherwise sells as a storage plan. If you would pay for that storage anyway, Gemini's AI features cost far less in practice than any rival's.
AI Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest paid AI plan from a major lab. It doubles Free usage, adds video generation and puts Gemini inside Gmail. It is a real option for light users who want more than Free.
Ultra is a different product. $99.99 buys five times AI Pro usage and $199.99 buys twenty times, plus Project Genie and full YouTube Premium. Only creators and heavy daily users will get value from it. Full math is in Gemini pricing.
Key features
Gemini in Google apps
From AI Plus up, Gemini works inside Gmail, and AI Pro adds Docs. It can draft replies from a thread, summarize an inbox, rewrite a document or pull facts from Drive files. This is the reason Google users pick Gemini over ChatGPT: the AI sits where the work already is.
Deep Research and Gemini Notebook
Deep Research is on the free plan. It browses many sources and returns a cited report. AI Pro adds Gemini Notebook with 5x Audio Overviews, which turns your documents into summaries and spoken overviews.
Image and video generation
Image generation and editing are free. Video generation starts on AI Plus, and Google Flow credits (200 on Plus, 1,000 on Pro, 10,000 or 25,000 on Ultra) fund video work in Flow, Google's filmmaking tool.
Gemini Live voice
Gemini Live is a voice mode on the free plan. You talk through a problem in a back and forth conversation and get spoken answers, which suits brainstorming, practice and hands free questions.
Jules, Antigravity and Chrome auto browse
AI Pro includes Jules, Google's coding agent, and access to Google Antigravity, its agent based development environment. Chrome auto browse lets Gemini carry out tasks in the browser. These put AI Pro in reach of developers, though Claude Code and Codex remain the more established coding agents.
Gems and Canvas
Gems are custom assistants with saved instructions. Canvas is a side by side editor for documents and code. Both are on Free.
What users say
| Source | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | 4.7 | 2.4 million |
| G2 | 4.4 | 635 |
| Trustpilot | 1.4 | 1,379 |
App Store ratings are strong, in line with ChatGPT and Claude. G2 places Gemini a step below them at 4.4. On Trustpilot, 82% of reviews are one star, and the complaints cluster on accuracy (wrong answers on basic tasks), app freezes and crashes, broken Google service integrations, and AI Pro users locked out after a burst of prompts. A minority note that clear, detailed prompts produce much better results.
The usage complaints line up with Google's compute based limits. Heavy users should expect to hit pauses on AI Pro during intense sessions.
Privacy and security
Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub sets out the rules. With Keep Activity on, chats are saved for 18 months by default (you can choose 3 or 36 months) and are used to improve Google's models. Human reviewers, including service providers, read a sample of chats to check quality, and reviewed chats are kept up to three years, disconnected from your account. Some data persists until you delete your Google Account.
With Keep Activity off, new chats are kept for 72 hours to respond and protect safety, and are not used to train models unless you submit feedback. Google notes that reviewer involvement for safety can still occur. Do not enter confidential information you would not want a reviewer to see.
Business customers on Gemini Enterprise get centralized management and built in security; Standard and Plus add VPC Service Controls, customer managed encryption keys and sovereign data boundaries.
Who it is for
- Gmail, Docs and Android users: the AI sits inside the apps you already open.
- Families and creators who need storage: 5 TB on AI Pro, shared through Google One.
- Budget buyers: AI Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest paid tier from a major lab.
- Video makers: Flow credits and video generation from AI Plus up.
Who should skip it
- Microsoft 365 workplaces: Copilot lives in Word, Excel and Outlook. See Microsoft Copilot review.
- People who want strict privacy by default: Gemini saves and reviews chats unless you turn Keep Activity off.
- Heavy coders: Claude Code and Codex are more mature. See Claude review.
- Researchers who want inline citations on every answer: see Perplexity review.
Alternatives
- ChatGPT: the widest tool set and agents. Compare in ChatGPT vs Gemini.
- Claude: long documents and Claude Code.
- Microsoft Copilot: the Office equivalent of Gemini's Google integration.
- Perplexity: cited search with model choice.
- Grok: live X search and video.
Verdict
On published facts, Gemini is the best value assistant for Google users. Free is the most generous free tier in the category, with Deep Research, Gemini Live and image generation. AI Pro at $19.99 adds Gemini 4 Argon, Gmail and Docs integration, Jules and 5 TB of storage for the price rivals charge for AI alone.
It falls short on clarity and control. Limits are compute based multiples, privacy defaults favor model improvement, and the best features sit in Ultra at five to ten times the price. If you live in Google, AI Pro is the easy pick; if you do not, the storage bundle matters less and ChatGPT or Claude may fit better.
