What it is
QuillBot started as a paraphrasing tool and is now a suite of writing utilities under one login: Paraphraser, Grammar Checker, AI Detector, Plagiarism Checker, AI Humanizer, AI Chat, Translate, Summarizer, Citation Generator and an AI image generator, plus a long tail of free PDF, image and converter tools. It is owned by Learneo, Inc. and says more than 35 million writers use it.
QuillBot runs on the web, as Chrome, Edge and Safari extensions, as a Word add in, as Mac and Windows apps, and as iOS and Android keyboards. Documents can be saved in QuillBot Flow, its built in editor.
Its core audience is students and non native English writers who need to rephrase, check and cite text quickly. It is not a brand voice or campaign tool.
Pricing explained
QuillBot has a free plan, one paid plan with four billing terms, and a Team plan. The live pricing page blocks automated access, so these prices come from an October 7, 2026 archived copy of quillbot.com/premium.
| Plan | Billing | Price | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | |
| Premium | Monthly | $19.95 | $19.95 |
| Premium | Quarterly | $39.95 | $13.31 |
| Premium | Every 6 months | $79.95 | $13.33 |
| Premium | Annual | $99.95 | $8.33 |
| Team | Annual, 5+ members | Contact sales | Volume discount |
The annual plan is 58% cheaper than monthly. Paying $19.95 for 12 months costs $239.40; the annual plan costs $99.95. The page data also shows QuillBot testing alternate monthly prices ($21.95 to $24.95) and alternate annual prices ($119.95 and $149.95) for some visitors, so the price you see at checkout can differ.
What the limits mean in practice:
| Feature | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Paraphraser | 100 words at a time, 2 modes | Unlimited, 9 modes plus custom modes |
| Humanizer | 100 words, limited usage | Full access with history |
| Summarizer | 1,200 words | 6,000 words |
| Plagiarism checker | Not included | 25,000 words per month |
| AI Detector | Limited | Full access |
| Flow storage | 10 MB | 100 MB |
A 25,000 word plagiarism allowance covers about ten 2,500 word essays a month. Each scan subtracts the document's word count, and you can buy more words. More detail and cost math are in QuillBot pricing.
Key features
Paraphraser
The paraphraser rewrites a sentence or paragraph in your chosen mode. Free gets Standard and Fluency. Premium adds 9 built in modes, including Academic and Simple, and unlimited Custom modes you define yourself. You can compare modes side by side, adjust the synonym slider and see your history. It works in 23 languages.
Grammar checker
The grammar checker flags spelling, grammar and punctuation, and Premium adds advanced writing suggestions and tone insights. It covers 6 languages, far fewer than Grammarly's 23, so non English writers outside the main European languages should check support first.
Plagiarism checker
Premium scans up to 25,000 words a month against billions of internet sources and returns a plagiarism score with matched passages. It works in more than 100 languages and accepts uploaded files. A built in citation tool formats sources for highlighted text.
AI Detector and AI Humanizer
The AI Detector estimates whether text was generated by AI; Premium gets full access. The AI Humanizer rewrites text to sound more natural, with full use, history and insights on Premium. QuillBot does not publish accuracy rates for either tool, and Trustpilot reviewers note the detector is not always right. Treat both as guides, not proof.
Summarizer, translation and AI Chat
The Summarizer condenses up to 6,000 words on Premium into key sentences or a paragraph, with custom summaries. Translate covers 40+ languages. AI Chat and the image generator are included with usage limits that are higher on Premium.
What users say
QuillBot holds 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 14,537 reviews, 8,684 of them in the last 12 months, with 87% five star and 3% one star. Its iOS keyboard app holds 4.7 from 3,058 App Store ratings. QuillBot replies to 99% of negative Trustpilot reviews, usually within a week.
Recurring praise: paraphrasing and research help for academic work, time saved, better vocabulary and grammar, and an easy interface. Recurring complaints: free plan limits that keep tightening (one reviewer notes 100 words before you must log in), renewal charges, and an AI detector that does not always agree with others. Compared with Grammarly's 3.1 and Jasper's 3.3 on Trustpilot, QuillBot's reputation is the strongest in this category.
Privacy and security
QuillBot links a Trust Center from its site, but the pages block automated access and we could not verify specific certifications such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001, so we do not list any. The Team plan advertises "data control" and centralized billing.
Practical advice: do not paste confidential client, legal or medical text into a free account. If your organization needs written security commitments, ask QuillBot's business team for its security documentation before you roll out the Team plan, or pick Grammarly, which publishes SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA and FedRAMP.
Who it is for
- Students. Paraphrasing, summaries, citations and a plagiarism check for $99.95 a year. Pause billing over summer.
- Non native English writers. Fluency mode and 23 paraphrase languages help rephrase drafts naturally.
- Freelance writers and editors on a budget. One subscription replaces a paraphraser, plagiarism checker and summarizer.
- Small teams of 5 or more. The Team plan adds a dashboard, central billing and a volume discount.
Who should skip it
- Anyone paying monthly for one month of use who needs an always on checker. Grammarly's free plan covers grammar everywhere at no cost.
- Writers in languages outside the main 6 for grammar. Grammarly covers 23 languages for spelling and grammar.
- Marketing teams that need brand voice. QuillBot has no brand voice or style guide on Premium; Jasper or Grammarly Pro do.
- Novelists working on manuscripts. ProWritingAid's reports and chapter critiques fit long form better.
Alternatives
- Grammarly: stronger always on checker, 23 languages, plagiarism and security certifications; Pro is $12 per month billed annually.
- Wordtune: unlimited rewrites for $9.99 per month or $6.99 annually, unlimited free grammar checks.
- ProWritingAid: best for long manuscripts, $10 per month billed yearly.
- ChatGPT and Claude: better for drafting from scratch, but no built in plagiarism checker.

Verdict
QuillBot is the best value buy in AI writing tools. At $8.33 per month on annual billing it bundles tools that would cost several times more separately, and its 4.8 Trustpilot score from more than 14,000 reviews is the best in the category.
Its limits are clear: grammar in 6 languages, no brand voice, a free plan capped at 100 words for paraphrasing, and no security certifications we could verify. Students and budget writers should buy the annual plan. Professionals who write inside email and docs all day get more from Grammarly.

Rytr3.8Frequently asked questions
Is QuillBot worth it?
On annual billing, yes for most students and writers. $99.95 a year ($8.33 per month) buys unlimited paraphrasing in 9 modes, advanced grammar, 6,000 word summaries, a full humanizer and AI Detector, and 25,000 plagiarism words a month. On monthly billing at $19.95, compare it with Wordtune or Grammarly first.
Is QuillBot free?
Yes. The free plan paraphrases up to 100 words at a time in Standard and Fluency modes, fixes basic grammar, humanizes up to 100 words with limited usage, summarizes up to 1,200 words and gives limited AI Detector access. Plagiarism checks need Premium.
How much is QuillBot Premium?
QuillBot Premium is $19.95 billed monthly, $39.95 per quarter, $79.95 every 6 months ($13.33 per month) or $99.95 per year ($8.33 per month), according to an October 2026 copy of its Premium page. QuillBot tests price variants, so your checkout price may differ slightly.
Who owns QuillBot?
QuillBot is a Learneo, Inc. business, according to its site footer. Learneo is the parent company of several learning products. QuillBot says it is trusted by more than 35 million writers.
Is using QuillBot cheating?
Using a grammar checker or paraphraser is not cheating in itself, but many schools treat paraphrased AI output or undisclosed rewording of sources as misconduct. Check your institution's policy, cite your sources, and use the plagiarism checker before you submit.
Does QuillBot have an AI humanizer?
Yes. The AI Humanizer rewrites text to read more naturally. Free users can humanize up to 100 words with limited usage; Premium removes the cap and adds history and insights. QuillBot does not publish detection bypass rates, and no tool can promise text will pass every AI detector.
Can I use QuillBot on multiple devices?
Yes. Premium works on all your devices, with up to 10 at a time to prevent account sharing. There are apps for Chrome, Edge, Safari, Word, Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.
Can I pause QuillBot instead of cancelling?
Yes. QuillBot lets you pause Premium from your Account page, for example over a summer break, and you are not billed for the paused time.
