What it is
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. It runs on the web, desktop and mobile, and it handles chat, writing, file analysis, web search, code execution and research. Anthropic positions it for work: documents, analysis and software. Claude Code, its terminal and IDE coding agent, is bundled with every paid plan rather than sold separately.
The product family has three layers. Consumer plans (Free, Pro and Max) are for individuals. Team and Enterprise add workspace controls. The Claude API sells the same models to developers by the token. This review covers the app plans; API prices are in Claude pricing.
On the model side, Free gets Sonnet and Haiku. Pro adds Opus and access to Fable, Anthropic's top model, through usage credits. Max includes all models, with Fable counting at 50% of weekly limits.
Pricing explained
| Plan | Price | Models | Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Sonnet, Haiku | Standard limits per 5 hour session |
| Pro | $20 per month, $17 billed annually | Adds Opus; Fable via credits | At least 5x Free per session |
| Max 5x | $100 per month | All models | 5x Pro per session, $100 API credits |
| Max 20x | $200 per month | All models | 20x Pro per session, $200 API credits |
| Team Standard | $25 per seat monthly, $20 annually | All models | More than Pro; 2 to 150 seats |
| Team Premium | $125 per seat monthly, $100 annually | All models | 5x Standard; pooled API credits up to $500 per month |
| Enterprise | $20 per seat per month annually, plus usage at API rates | All models | 20 seat minimum, scales with usage |
Claude's pricing is the clearest of the major assistants at the top and bottom. Pro matches ChatGPT Plus at $20 monthly and beats it on annual billing at $17 per month ($200 up front). Enterprise is unusual: Anthropic publishes a list price, $20 per seat plus usage, where most rivals say contact sales.
The weak spot is the middle. Anthropic does not publish message counts. Limits are framed as multiples of Free per 5 hour session, plus weekly caps on paid plans. Heavy Claude Code users burn through Pro faster than chat users, because both draw from one pool.
Max includes API credits ($100 or $200 per month), which offsets part of the cost for developers who would pay for API calls anyway. For the full plan math, see Claude pricing. The BestBots AI Price Index puts the median seat plan among major assistants at $19.99.
Key features
Long context and file work
Claude's context window runs up to 1M tokens depending on model, which means whole contracts, codebases or book length manuscripts can sit in one conversation. Projects (unlimited on Pro) keep files and instructions together across chats.
Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent for the terminal and IDE. It reads a repository, edits files, runs commands and handles multi step tasks. It is included on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. If you would otherwise pay for a separate coding tool, this is the biggest value lever in Claude's pricing. See best AI coding agents for how it compares.
Artifacts, Design, Slides and Docs
Artifacts render code, documents and small apps next to the chat. Claude Design, Slides and Docs, listed on every plan including Free, produce visual layouts, decks and documents. These are built as code and layouts, not generated images.
Research, web search and connectors
Web search is on Free. Research, a longer multi source report mode, is on Pro and up. App connections and connectors (including MCP) let Claude read from tools like Slack, and Team adds enterprise search across connected sources.
Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365
Pro and higher include a Chrome extension and Claude for Microsoft 365, which brings Claude into Outlook and Office documents. For Microsoft shops this narrows the gap with Copilot.
Admin and compliance
Team adds SSO, central billing and enterprise search. Enterprise adds SCIM, audit logs, the Compliance API, custom data retention, spend controls, role based access and a HIPAA ready offering.
What users say
| Source | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | 4.7 | 281,000+ |
| G2 | 4.6 | 496 |
| Trustpilot | 1.5 | 2,082 |
App Store and G2 ratings put Claude in the top tier, level with ChatGPT on G2. Trustpilot is lopsided, with 80% one star reviews, and the themes repeat: usage limits that deplete faster than expected mid project, billing confusion around extra usage purchases, and support that is mostly automated. A smaller group praises Claude as a research and writing assistant compared with rivals.
The pattern lines up with the plan design. Complaints are rarely about answer quality; they are about running out of usage. If you plan to use Claude Code heavily, budget for Max or watch your session usage in settings.
Privacy and security
Anthropic changed its consumer data policy in 2025. On Free, Pro and Max, you choose whether your chats can be used to improve future models, and you can change it at any time in Privacy Settings. If you allow it, retention for new or resumed chats extends from 30 days to five years. Anthropic's privacy policy notes that chats flagged for safety review or content you report can still be used even if you opt out. Deleted conversations are removed from history immediately and from back end systems within 30 days.
Team, Enterprise, the API and government and education offerings are excluded from that consumer policy and governed by commercial terms. Team lists no training on content by default. Enterprise adds audit logs, custom retention and a HIPAA ready configuration.
For client work, a Team seat at $20 per month on annual billing gives you the commercial data terms at the same price as Pro on monthly billing.
Who it is for
- Writers and analysts: long documents, contracts and research reports fit in one conversation.
- Developers: Claude Code is bundled, so one $20 plan covers chat and a coding agent.
- Microsoft 365 users who prefer Claude: Claude for Microsoft 365 is on Pro and up.
- Companies that want a published enterprise price: $20 per seat plus usage, with a 20 seat minimum.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who needs image or video generation: use ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok. See Gemini review and Grok review.
- People who want predictable message counts: Claude's session based limits frustrate light planners.
- Budget buyers: ChatGPT Go is $8 and Mistral Vibe Pro is $14.99. See Le Chat review.
- Research that must cite every claim: Perplexity is built around citations. See Perplexity review.
Alternatives
- ChatGPT: the widest tool set, native images, an $8 Go plan. Compare in ChatGPT vs Claude.
- Gemini: $19.99 with 5 TB storage and Gmail and Docs integration.
- Microsoft Copilot: AI inside Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Perplexity: cited answers and model choice, including Claude models.
- Mistral Vibe: the cheapest full paid tier at $14.99, with a coding agent.
Verdict
Claude is the strongest choice on published facts for anyone whose work is long text or code. Claude Code on every paid plan, a context window up to 1M tokens, a $17 annual Pro price and a published Enterprise price make it the most transparent premium assistant.
It falls short on two fronts: no native image generation and usage limits that are described as multiples rather than numbers. If you write and code, start on Pro with monthly billing, watch your session usage for two weeks, then decide between annual Pro and Max.

Is Claude worth paying for?
If you write, analyze long documents or code, yes. Pro at $20 per month, or $17 on annual billing, adds Opus, Claude Code, Research and at least 5x Free usage per 5 hour session. Light users can stay on Free, which includes web search, file creation and memory.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
It depends on the job. Claude includes a coding agent on every paid plan and handles very long documents well, while ChatGPT has a wider tool set including native image generation and a cheaper $8 Go plan. See our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison for scenario by scenario picks.
Is Claude Max worth it?
Only if you hit Pro limits most days, typically from heavy Claude Code use. Max 5x at $100 gives five times Pro usage per session and $100 per month in API credits; Max 20x at $200 gives twenty times and $200 in credits.
Does Claude train on my chats?
On Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic asks you to choose whether chats can be used to improve models, and you can change that in Privacy Settings. If you allow it, retention for new chats extends to five years. Team, Enterprise and API use are excluded from this consumer policy.
Can Claude generate images?
Anthropic's pricing page lists no image generation model. Claude can build visuals as code through Artifacts, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, but it does not create photos the way ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok do.
What are Claude's usage limits?
Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count. Usage is measured per rolling 5 hour session, with weekly caps on paid plans. Pro gets at least 5x Free per session, Max 5x and Max 20x get 5 and 20 times Pro.
Is Claude Code included in Claude Pro?
Yes. Claude Code is part of Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and it draws from the same usage pool as chat.
What are the best Claude alternatives?
ChatGPT for the widest tool set, Gemini for Google users who also want storage, Microsoft Copilot for Office users and Perplexity for cited research.
