Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Character.AI is still the largest library of user made AI characters, and its free plan keeps unlimited messaging. But in October 2026 the company is in Chapter 11, with Disney's $20 million bid on the table and a shutdown possible if no buyer closes. Add the under 18 ban and the lawsuits, and it is an adults only entertainment app to use month to month, not a service to commit to.

Character.AI still has the largest library of user made characters and a free tier with unlimited messaging, but the company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 and could be wound down if the sale fails. Add the under 18 ban, wrongful death settlements and state lawsuits, and it is a platform to use lightly and never pay for a year upfront.

What it is
Character.AI is an app and website where adults chat, call and role play with AI characters. Most characters are made by other users, from original personas to fan versions of fictional figures, and anyone can build one with a personality, backstory and voice without code. Chats run on Character.AI's own chat styles: PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak are free, and DeepSqueak and LongSqueak are premium.
The company, Character Technologies, was founded in November 2021 by former Google engineers Noam Shazeer and Daniel de Freitas. In 2024 Google hired Shazeer and took a non exclusive license to the technology. TechCrunch reported 20 million monthly active users as of October 2024 and $193 million raised in total.
Status in October 2026
On October 12, 2026, Character.AI announced a voluntary Chapter 11 filing to run a court supervised sale. Its post says the platform remains up, subscriptions stay active, billing is unchanged for now, and privacy practices have not changed. It also says the sale should conclude by late November or early December 2026, and if no viable buyer emerges, the platform would be shut down.
TechCrunch reported on October 18, 2026 that Disney is the stalking horse bidder: $20 million for assets plus a non exclusive perpetual technology license, and job offers to at least 60 employees, most of whom accepted. A stalking horse bid sets the floor; other buyers can still outbid it. The filing cited high costs plus potential litigation liabilities and regulatory engagement, per TechCrunch.
Pricing explained
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Unlimited messaging on free styles (PipSqueak 3, ShortSqueak), ads, slow mode at busy times |
| (c.ai) lite | $4.99 per month or $2.49 per week | Daily allowance on premium styles, fewer ads, less slow mode, customization, more memory |
| c.ai+ | $9.99 per month or $94.99 per year | Unlimited premium chats, no ads, full memory suite, Style Control, Lorebook |
Prices are from Character.AI's September 2026 plan post and the App Store, and vary by region. The App Store also sells Charms packs from $0.99 to $49.99, a virtual currency used inside the app.
Do not buy the annual plan right now. $94.99 per year saves about 21% against twelve months at $9.99, but the company only promises advance notice if paid features are affected. Month to month limits your exposure if the platform changes hands or closes.

Key features
Character library and creation
The library is the product: millions of user generated characters, plus a creator that sets personality, greeting, backstory and voice. Creator spotlights on the company blog show users with game design and writing backgrounds building detailed personas.
Chat styles
Character.AI lets you pick a chat style per conversation. PipSqueak 3 became the free default in September 2026 and the company calls it noticeably smarter than before; ShortSqueak gives short, quick replies. Paid plans add DeepSqueak and LongSqueak for longer, more detailed roleplay.
Memory and Lorebook
Paid plans include expanded memory, and c.ai+ includes the full memory suite plus Lorebook, which stores world and character facts a conversation should respect.
Calls and voices
You can talk to characters by voice and give your own characters custom voices.
Images
In September 2026 the company described post trained image models built to keep characters visually consistent.
Stories
For users under 18, the company replaced open ended chat with Stories, a guided format for interactive fiction with characters.
What users say
- App Store: 4.3 from about 560,000 ratings. Strong for an entertainment app.
- Trustpilot: 1.2 from 740 reviews, 442 of them in the last year. Recurring complaints: ads every few replies, paid caps on swipes, memory that loses the thread, bots taking over the user's character, and an age verification step that asks for ID and often fails.
The split is typical of the category: casual users rate the app well in store, while frustrated long time users write reviews elsewhere.
Privacy and security
What it collects. The App Store privacy label lists location, contact info, identifiers, usage data, purchases, financial info and user content, linked to your identity and used for advertising, analytics, personalization and app functionality.
Bankruptcy and your data. The company says its privacy policy and practices are unchanged. The Verge reported, as cited on Wikipedia, that 40 attorneys general filed a notice in the case asking for protections on consumer data sold in bankruptcy. If you have chats you would not want transferred to a buyer, download your data and delete your account.
Training. Character.AI trains its own chat style models. We found no published training opt out for consumer chats. Assume your chats inform the product.
Safety, age rules and legal record
This section matters more for Character.AI than for any other assistant we cover, so here are the facts in order.
- October 2024. The mother of a 14 year old Florida boy who died by suicide sued Character.AI and Google, alleging his attachment to a chatbot contributed to his death.
- December 2024. Two Texas families sued, and the company added dedicated moderation and content filtering for under 18 users.
- August 2025. The Texas attorney general accused Meta and Character.AI of misleading children with mental health claims, per TechCrunch.
- September 2025. The FTC sent 6(b) orders to seven companies including Character Technologies, asking how they test and monitor companion chatbots for harm to children and teens.
- November 25, 2025. Users under 18 lost the ability to create or chat with characters in open ended chat. Stories replaced it for minors.
- January 2026. Character.AI and Google agreed to settle the teen death cases, with terms not disclosed and no admission of liability. Kentucky's attorney general sued, alleging the company endangered children.
- May 2026. Pennsylvania's Department of State and Board of Medicine sued after a character claimed to be a licensed psychiatrist and invented a license number. The company says every chat carries a disclaimer that characters are fiction.
- October 2026. Chapter 11 filing, citing litigation and regulatory costs.
If you are a parent: the app is rated 18+ and the company bars minors from open ended chat. Age checks have been criticized as unreliable in user reviews, so use device level parental controls.
Who it is for
- Adults who enjoy interactive fiction and fandom role play.
- Writers testing characters and dialogue.
- Casual users happy on the free plan with ads.
Who should skip it
- Anyone under 18, by the company's own rules.
- People looking for emotional support or advice. Characters are fiction, and Pennsylvania's suit shows how badly a bot posing as a professional can go. Use a licensed service.
- Anyone who wants a stable long term home for their characters. The sale outcome is unknown.
- Productivity users. A general assistant like ChatGPT or Claude fits better.
Alternatives
- Replika: one ongoing companion instead of a library, 18+, from $7.99 per month. Compare in Character.AI vs Replika.
- ChatGPT and Claude: better for creative writing with a stable company behind it.
- Poe: user built bots on top of many vendors' models.
Verdict
Character.AI is still a fun, capable role play app with a generous free tier, and Disney's bid suggests the technology has value. But you are using a platform in bankruptcy with a heavy legal record and an adults only rule. Stay on the free plan or pay month to month, export anything you care about, and keep it away from kids.
