Nine AI chat assistants compared on what you get for free, what the paid plan costs and which model it runs, as listed in October 2026.
By , research by the BestBots team ยท Updated Oct 18, 2026
Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
ChatGPT is the best AI assistant for most people in October 2026: it covers chat, images, voice, agents and coding in one app, with Plus at $20 per month running GPT-6. Claude is the stronger pick for long writing and coding, Gemini wins for Google users, and Copilot wins inside Microsoft 365.
Our top picks
How to choose
Start with where you already work. An assistant that lives inside your email and documents saves more time than a slightly smarter one in a separate tab. If your day runs in Gmail and Docs, Gemini is already there. If it runs in Outlook, Word and Excel, Copilot is. If neither matters, pick on the work itself.
Then match the assistant to your main job:
- Writing long documents or code: Claude. Every paid plan includes Claude Code, and the context window runs up to 1M tokens depending on model.
- A bit of everything, including images and voice: ChatGPT. It has the widest tool set and the most plan options.
- Research you need to verify: Perplexity. Citations on every answer, plus premium data sources on Pro.
- Live news and social trends: Grok, which searches X in real time.
- Lowest cost: Mistral Vibe at $14.99 for a full paid plan, or DeepSeek and Meta AI for free.
Last, check the limits. No major assistant publishes a fixed message count for its main paid plan any more. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok all describe usage as multiples ("5x Free", "4x Plus") that reset on rolling windows with weekly caps. If you hit limits often, the real choice is between the $100 to $200 tiers each vendor now sells.

What it costs
Here is what the main paid plan of each assistant costs per person per month, as listed on each vendor's pricing page in October 2026. These are the numbers in the BestBots AI Price Index.
| Assistant | Main paid plan | Price per month | Top model named on that plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mistral Vibe | Pro | $14.99 | Not named per plan |
| Perplexity | Pro | $17 (billed annually) | Choice of GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok 4.7 |
| Gemini | Google AI Pro | $19.99 | Gemini 4 Argon |
| Microsoft Copilot | Microsoft 365 Premium | $19.99 | Latest OpenAI models (business plans) |
| ChatGPT | Plus | $20 | GPT-6 |
| Claude | Pro | $20 ($17 annually) | Opus |
| Grok | Premium | $30 | Latest Grok models |
The median is $19.99. Over a year, ChatGPT Plus costs $240 on monthly billing. Claude Pro costs $200 billed up front on the annual plan. Gemini AI Pro costs $239.88, but that includes 5 TB of storage, which Google otherwise sells separately.
The cheap tiers are worth a look if you only chat a few times a day. ChatGPT Go is $8 and Google AI Plus is $4.99, but both run smaller models (GPT-5.6 Luna and Gemini Flash) and Go carries ads.
The power tiers have converged. ChatGPT Pro starts at $100, Claude Max at $100, Google AI Ultra at $99.99, Grok Super at $100 and Microsoft 365 Pro at $99.99. Each roughly doubles again at $200. Perplexity Max is the outlier at $167 per month billed annually.
Team and business plans
For a team, compare seat prices and what comes with them.
| Assistant | Team plan | Price per seat per month |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Business, standard seat | $20 annually, $25 monthly |
| Claude | Team, standard seat | $20 annually, $25 monthly |
| Microsoft Copilot | Copilot Business add-on | $21 annually ($18 first year promo), plus a Microsoft 365 license |
| Gemini | Gemini Enterprise, Business edition | From $21 |
| Mistral Vibe | Team | $24.99 |
| Grok | Teams | From $30 |
| Perplexity | Enterprise Pro | $34 annually |
ChatGPT Business covers teams of 2 to 200; Claude Team covers 2 to 150. Both let you mix standard seats with premium seats that carry 5x the usage, at $100 per seat per month on annual billing. Claude also publishes an Enterprise list price, $20 per seat per month billed annually plus usage at API rates, while ChatGPT Enterprise is contact sales.
Free plans compared
Every assistant here has a free option, but they are not equal.
- Gemini Free: Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice, Canvas, Gems and 15 GB of storage.
- ChatGPT Free: unlimited everyday text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna, with separate limits on file uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis.
- Claude Free: Sonnet and Haiku, web search, file creation and code execution, memory, Artifacts and up to 5 projects. No Claude Code.
- Perplexity Free: cited search with basic models and limited daily usage.
- Grok Free: limited chat and agent requests.
- Mistral Vibe Free: limited messages, searches and coding sessions, basic image generation.
- DeepSeek and Meta AI: free is the only plan.
AI assistant vs AI chatbot vs AI agent
The terms blur, so here is how we use them. An AI assistant is a general chat app for one person: you ask, it answers, writes or creates. An AI chatbot in the business sense answers your customers on your website and is priced per resolution; see our AI chatbots hub for those. An AI agent takes multi step actions on its own. The big assistants now include agents: ChatGPT has the Work agent and Codex, Claude has Claude Code and scheduled tasks, Perplexity has Computer and Mistral has Vibe for code.
Red flags
- Fake apps. Search the App Store for "ChatGPT" or "Grok" and you will find lookalikes. xAI states that it does not authorize any resellers. Buy from the vendor's own site or the vendor's verified app.
- Annual only pricing. Perplexity shows only annual prices on its pricing page. Check the monthly price at checkout before you commit.
- Promo prices that expire. Microsoft's $18 Copilot Business price applies to the first year only.
- Vague limits. "5x more usage" is a multiple of an unpublished number. If limits matter, start on monthly billing and watch the usage meter in settings before you go annual.
- Data location. DeepSeek is based in China. Many employers restrict it, so check your policy before uploading work files.
How we picked
We compared nine consumer and work assistants on published facts only: plan prices and billing basis, the model each plan names, free plan contents, image and voice features, team plan pricing and security claims, and verified ratings on G2 and the App Store. Every price comes from the vendor's own pricing or help page, opened in October 2026. Ranking reflects the best fit for most readers on those facts; awards reflect the specific job each assistant does best. We do not accept payment for placement. See how we score.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI assistant in 2026?
ChatGPT is the best fit for most people because it covers chat, images, voice, agents and coding in one app at $20 per month for Plus. Claude is the better pick for long writing and coding, and Gemini or Copilot win if you live in Google or Microsoft apps.
What is the best free AI assistant?
Gemini's free plan includes Deep Research, Gemini Live voice and image generation. ChatGPT Free gives unlimited everyday text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna with limits on tools. DeepSeek and Meta AI are free with no paid tier at all.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
For long documents and coding, Claude has the edge on the facts: up to 1M tokens of context and Claude Code on every paid plan. ChatGPT has more tools, including image and video features, and more plan options. Both cost $20 per month. See our full [ChatGPT vs Claude](/chatgpt-vs-claude) comparison.
Which AI assistant is best for work?
Pick the one that matches your office software. Copilot works inside Microsoft 365 apps, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs. For a standalone workspace, ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both cost $20 per seat per month on annual billing and include SSO.
What is the cheapest paid AI assistant?
Among the big assistants, Mistral Vibe Pro is $14.99 per month. Gemini's Google AI Plus is $4.99 and ChatGPT Go is $8, but both run smaller models and Go carries ads. Grok Plus is $8 but is mainly an X subscription.
Which AI assistant cites its sources?
Perplexity puts inline citations on every answer and is built around search. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok can also search the web and show sources, but Perplexity adds premium data like PitchBook and Statista on paid plans.
Are AI assistants safe for company data?
Business tiers are the safer choice. ChatGPT Business, Claude Team and Perplexity Enterprise all state that they do not train on your business data by default, and enterprise tiers add SSO, audit logs and retention controls. Consumer free plans typically let you opt out of training rather than excluding you by default.
Do I need more than one AI assistant?
Most people do fine with one. Heavy users sometimes pair a general assistant like ChatGPT or Claude with Perplexity for research, or use the assistant built into their office suite. Perplexity Pro can also route to several labs' models from one subscription.
