The short answer
They are different shapes of tool, and plenty of developers run both.
Claude Code is an agent. You give it a task in the terminal (or the VS Code or JetBrains extension, the desktop app or the web) and it reads the repo, edits files, runs commands and reports back. It is billed as part of a Claude subscription and uses Claude models.
Cursor is an editor. It wraps an agent, completions, Cloud Agents, Automations, Bugbot code review and Origin code hosting into one app, plus a CLI. Its new plans include Cursor's own models; third party models such as Claude are metered separately.
The deciding question is which models you want on the flat fee. If the answer is Claude, Claude Code is the direct route. If you want the Cursor editor experience and its in house models, Cursor.

Solo developer, one year. Claude Pro is $240 monthly or $200 up front, with Claude Code and the Claude apps included. Cursor Premium is $360 monthly or $300 annually before third party usage.
Solo developer who wants Claude in an editor. On Cursor Premium, an illustrative month of 20M input and 2M output tokens on Claude Sonnet 5.5 at listed rates ($2 and $10 per million) adds $60, so about $90 a month in total. On Claude Pro the same work comes out of plan usage, and if you outgrow it, Max 5x is $100 flat. You can also run Claude Code inside Cursor as an extension and pay Anthropic, not Cursor, for Claude.
Team of five, billed monthly. Claude Team Standard: 5 x $25 = $125 ($100 annually). Cursor Teams at the $30 tier: $150, plus third party models at API list price and the Cursor Token Rate.

The workflow difference matters more than the feature list. Claude Code suits people who describe a task and let the agent run: migrations, multi file refactors, test fixing, scripted jobs. Cursor suits people who want to watch and steer every edit inside an editor with tab completions and inline diffs.
Who wins for X
You want Claude models at a flat price. Claude Code. Claude usage is in the plan; on Cursor it is a second bill.
You want a polished AI editor with cloud agents and review in one place. Cursor. Premium bundles Cloud Agents, Automations, Bugbot and Origin.
You use JetBrains. Claude Code has a JetBrains extension. Cursor replaces your IDE.
You keep an agent busy all day. Both have $100 and $200 tiers. Claude Max gives 5x or 20x Pro usage per 5 hour session plus $100 or $200 a month of API credits. Cursor Super and Ultra give 15x and 50x Plus usage, reset weekly, on Cursor's own models.
You want both. Install Claude Code inside Cursor. Many teams keep the editor and point the heavy agent work at a Claude plan.
Verdict
For agentic coding with Claude models, Claude Code is the better buy in October 2026: $20 includes Claude usage across the terminal, IDE extensions, desktop and web, and the Max tiers are flat rather than metered per token. Cursor is still the stronger pure editor, but its new plans favor Cursor's own Grok and Composer models, which makes it the better pick only if you like those models or need Bugbot and Cloud Agents in the same app. Compare both against the field in our best AI coding agents guide, or read the Claude Code review.
