Claude Code is the best terminal based coding agent in our rankings, and it comes with every paid Claude plan from $20 a month. It reads your codebase, edits files and runs commands from the terminal, IDE, desktop or web. The tradeoffs: no free tier, Claude models only on a subscription, and usage limits measured per 5 hour session instead of a published message count.

By Anthropic

Claude Code is a strong agent for multi file work in the terminal, and it comes with every paid Claude plan from $20 a month, with Max at $100 or $200 for heavy use. The tradeoffs are that it runs Claude models only on a subscription, the free Claude plan does not include it, and usage is metered per 5 hour session rather than as a fixed message count.

What it is

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. Anthropic describes it as a tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and integrates with your development tools. You start it in a project folder and give it a task in plain language; it plans, makes changes across files, runs your tests and shows you the diff.

It runs on several surfaces from one subscription:

  • Terminal CLI, the full featured version, installed with a native installer (macOS, Linux, WSL, Windows), Homebrew, WinGet or Linux package managers.
  • VS Code extension with inline diffs, @ mentions, plan review and conversation history. The same extension installs in Cursor.
  • JetBrains integration.
  • Desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux (beta), with visual diff review, side by side sessions, scheduled tasks and cloud sessions.
  • Web in the browser.

Pricing explained

Claude Code has no standalone price. It is part of the Claude subscription.

Plan Price Claude Code Usage
Free $0 Not included Not applicable
Pro $20 monthly, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) Included At least 5x Free per 5 hour session
Max 5x $100 a month Included 5x Pro per session, $100 a month API credits
Max 20x $200 a month Included 20x Pro per session, $200 a month API credits
Team Standard $25 per seat monthly, $20 annually Included More than Pro
Team Premium $125 per seat monthly, $100 annually Included 5x Standard seats
Enterprise $20 per seat billed annually plus API usage Included 20 seat minimum, scales with usage

Prices as listed on Claude's pricing page in October 2026. Max is billed monthly only.

What $20 buys. The Pro seat includes Claude Code plus the Claude chat apps, projects, Research, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365. If you would pay for a chat assistant anyway, the coding agent is effectively bundled.

When to step up. Pro's limits reset each 5 hour session. If you hit them most working days, Max 5x at $100 is the next step, and Max 20x at $200 is for people running agents for most of the day. Both Max tiers also add monthly API credits for the Claude Platform.

API alternative. You can run Claude Code on an Anthropic Console API key or a third party provider and pay per token. That suits CI jobs and occasional overflow, but costs track tokens with no plan ceiling.

Team math. Five developers on Team Standard cost $125 a month, or $100 billed annually. Upgrading two heavy users to Premium seats adds $200 a month on monthly billing.

Features

Repo wide agent work. The core loop is task in, diff out: read the relevant files, edit across many of them, run commands and tests, and iterate. This suits refactors, migrations, dependency upgrades and test fixing, where an autocomplete tool helps less.

Many surfaces, one plan. The terminal, IDE extensions, desktop app and web share one subscription, so you can start a task in the terminal and review the diff in the desktop app.

Model choice inside Claude. Opus for hard tasks, Sonnet for everyday work and Haiku for quick edits, with Fable via usage credits on paid plans. Picking a smaller model stretches session limits.

Provider flexibility. The CLI, VS Code and JetBrains extensions also support third party providers, which matters for companies that buy models through their cloud account.

What it does not do on a subscription. It does not run GPT or Gemini models. If you want several labs' models on one flat plan, GitHub Copilot or Devin Desktop cover that.

Setup

On macOS, Linux or WSL, one install command, then run claude in a project folder and log in on first use. Windows has PowerShell and CMD installers, with Git for Windows recommended so it can use Bash. Homebrew and WinGet installs do not auto update; the native installer does. The VS Code extension installs from the marketplace, and the desktop app includes Claude Code without a separate CLI install. Anthropic's docs include a terminal guide for people who have never opened one.

Who it is for

  • Developers comfortable in the terminal who want to hand off multi step tasks.
  • Claude subscribers, since Claude Code is already included in Pro and up.
  • Heavy users who prefer a flat $100 or $200 plan over per token or per credit billing.
  • JetBrains and VS Code users who want an agent without switching editors.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who needs a free plan; Claude Code is not on Claude Free.
  • Developers who want GPT or Gemini on the same subscription; see GitHub Copilot or Codex.
  • People who mostly want autocomplete; Copilot at $10 is the cheaper fit.
  • Teams that need fixed, published quotas; Anthropic does not publish a message count per session.

Verdict

Claude Code is the strongest terminal agent among the tools we compared on published facts: one $20 plan covers the terminal, IDE extensions, desktop and web, Max tiers give flat pricing for heavy use, and its VS Code extension has over 28 million installs with a 3.7 rating from 829 reviews. It ranks behind GitHub Copilot overall because Copilot is cheaper, has a free tier and bundles more labs' models across more IDEs. If you want a Claude powered agent for real repo work, it is the direct route; read Claude Code vs Cursor if you are weighing an AI editor instead.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Claude Code cost?

Claude Code is included with Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually at $200 up front), Max 5x at $100, Max 20x at $200, Team Standard at $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually, Team Premium at $125 or $100, and Enterprise at $20 per seat billed annually plus usage at API rates. You can also run it on an API key and pay per token.

Is Claude Code free?

No. The free Claude plan does not include Claude Code. The cheapest way in is Claude Pro at $20 a month, or an Anthropic Console account billed at API rates.

What are Claude Code's usage limits?

Anthropic meters usage per 5 hour session rather than as a fixed number of messages. Pro gives at least 5x the Free plan's usage per session, and Max gives 5x or 20x Pro. Usage varies with the model and the size of the task, so long agent runs on Opus use more than quick edits on Haiku.

Which models does Claude Code use?

On a subscription, Claude models: Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, with Fable available through usage credits on paid plans. The terminal CLI, VS Code and JetBrains extensions can also run through third party providers such as Amazon Bedrock.

Does Claude Code work in VS Code and JetBrains?

Yes. There is a VS Code extension with inline diffs, @ mentions and plan review, which also installs in Cursor, and a JetBrains integration. There is also a desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux (beta) and a web version.

Is Claude Max worth it for Claude Code?

If you hit Pro limits most days, probably. Max 5x at $100 gives five times Pro usage per session and $100 a month in API credits; Max 20x at $200 gives twenty times and $200 in API credits. If you only hit limits occasionally, Pro plus an API key for overflow can be cheaper.

Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot: which should I pick?

Copilot is cheaper at $10 a month and includes models from several labs across more IDEs. Claude Code is a stronger fit for long terminal based agent work with Claude models and comes with the full Claude app. Many developers use Copilot for completions and Claude Code for larger tasks.
