Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Claude is the better assistant for anyone who can pay $20 per month: Opus, Claude Code, Projects and business controls. DeepSeek is the better pick on price: the app is free with reasoning and search, and its cheapest API model costs $0.30 per million input tokens at peak, against $2 for Claude Sonnet. The tradeoff is that DeepSeek stores data in China and trains on inputs by default.

Head to head scenarios
A free reasoning assistant
Winner: DeepSeek. The full app is free, with no paid tier pushing you to upgrade. Claude Free is good but runs on session limits.
Writing and long document analysis
Winner: Claude. Projects, Research and Opus on Pro make it the better writing partner. Both list 1M tokens of context, but Claude's app features make that context easier to use.
Coding agent work
Winner: Claude. Claude Code is bundled and shares one usage pool with chat. DeepSeek has no agent of its own.
High volume API jobs on a budget
Winner: DeepSeek. Off peak rates from $0.15 per million input tokens and cache hits from $0.003 make it one of the cheapest published APIs.
Company use with sensitive data
Winner: Claude. No training by default on Team and Enterprise, SSO, audit logs and a HIPAA ready offering. DeepSeek has none of these and stores data in China.
Privacy
DeepSeek's privacy policy states that it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China and uses inputs to train and improve its models. It lists a right to opt out of training by contacting its privacy team, and keeps account data and inputs for as long as the account exists.
Claude lists training as opt out on Free, Pro and Max and none by default on Team and Enterprise. Enterprise adds SCIM, audit logs, role based access and custom retention.
Verdict
Claude is the better product and the only one of the two suitable for most workplaces. DeepSeek is the value pick for free chat and cheap API volume, as long as China based data storage is acceptable for what you send it. If you care about both cost and quality, a practical split is Claude Code for agent work and a cheap API model for bulk jobs.
