The short answer

  • Choose Claude for writing, research synthesis and coding, with Claude Code bundled and a published Enterprise price.
  • Choose Gemini for Google app users, families and creators who want image and video generation and lots of cloud storage.
  • On a tight budget, Gemini wins with AI Plus at $4.99 per month. Claude has no tier between Free and $20.

Pricing

Tier Claude Gemini
Free $0, Sonnet and Haiku $0, Flash-Lite, 15 GB storage
Entry None Google AI Plus, $4.99 per month, 400 GB storage
Standard Pro, $20 per month or $200 per year Google AI Pro, $19.99 per month, 5 TB storage
Power Max, $100 (5x Pro) or $200 (20x Pro) per month Google AI Ultra, $99.99 (5x Pro) or $199.99 (20x Pro) per month
Team Team, $25 monthly or $20 annually per seat Gemini Enterprise, from $21 per seat per month
Enterprise $20 per seat billed annually plus API usage, 20 seat minimum Not listed on the pages we compared

The price ladders are almost identical from $20 up. The differences are in the bundle. Google adds storage (5 TB on AI Pro, 20 TB and up on Ultra), YouTube Premium Lite on AI Pro and full YouTube Premium on Ultra, plus Google Flow credits for video. Claude adds API credits on Max ($100 or $200 per month) and pooled API credits of up to $500 per month on Team.

If you would pay for Google One storage anyway, Gemini is the clear value pick. If you would not, the AI comparison is closer, and Claude's annual Pro price of $200 per year makes it slightly cheaper over twelve months ($200 against $239.88).

Models and features

Claude Free runs Sonnet and Haiku; Pro adds Opus, with Fable, Anthropic's top tier, available through usage credits on Pro and partly included on Max. Gemini Free runs Flash-Lite, AI Plus runs Flash, and AI Pro unlocks Gemini 4 Argon, Pro and Flash. Ultra gives the highest access to the same models.

Head to head scenarios

Long reports and manuscripts

Winner: Claude. Both list 1M tokens on their main paid plan, but Claude's strengths are text quality, Projects and Research on Pro. Gemini's Docs integration is handy for editing, yet Claude is the stronger writing partner on the facts we compared.

Coding

Winner: Claude. Claude Code is included on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise and shares one pool with chat. Jules on AI Pro is a capable agent, but Claude Code is the more established tool and the one most developers compare against.

Gmail, Docs and Android users

Winner: Gemini. It works inside Gmail and Docs from AI Plus at $4.99 and is built into Android and Chrome. Claude connects to Microsoft 365, not Google's apps.

Images and video

Winner: Gemini. Image generation is on Free and video starts at $4.99. Claude lists no image or video model.

Microsoft 365 workplaces

Winner: Claude. Pro includes Claude in Microsoft 365 and Outlook. Gemini Enterprise has Microsoft 365 connectors, but Gemini's consumer plans are built around Google's apps.

A family that needs storage

Winner: Gemini. Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite for $19.99. Claude lists no storage.

Privacy

Claude lists model training as opt out on Free, Pro and Max, and states no training by default on Team and Enterprise. Enterprise adds SCIM, audit logs, custom retention and a HIPAA ready offering.

Google's Gemini privacy hub states that while Keep Activity is on, chats, files and Gemini Live recordings are saved and used to train models, auto deleting after 18 months by default (adjustable to 3 or 36). A subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers after being disconnected from your account. With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used for training and are kept for 72 hours. Work and school accounts follow separate terms.

Verdict

Claude is the better choice for writers, analysts and developers: Opus, Claude Code and 1M context for $20, or $200 a year. Gemini is the better value for Google users and households, since $19.99 buys strong models, image and video generation, Gmail and Docs integration and 5 TB of storage. If you mostly write and code, pick Claude; if you mostly live in Google, pick Gemini.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude better than Gemini?

For long writing, analysis and coding, Claude is the stronger pick on the published facts, with Claude Code on every paid plan. For Gmail, Docs and Android users, or anyone who wants images, video and storage in one subscription, Gemini gives more for the same money.

Which is cheaper, Claude Pro or Google AI Pro?

Monthly, they are a cent apart: $20 and $19.99. Claude Pro is $200 per year on annual billing, about $16.67 per month. Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite, which offsets the price if you would buy those anyway.

Which is better for coding, Claude or Gemini?

Claude for most developers, because Claude Code is included on Pro and shares one usage pool with chat. Google AI Pro includes Jules, its coding agent, with higher limits than lower tiers. If you already work in Google Cloud, Jules is a reasonable option.

Does Claude have a bigger context window than Gemini?

No, they match on paper. Claude lists up to 1M tokens depending on model, and Google lists a 1M token context window on AI Pro. Gemini Free and AI Plus do not list the 1M figure.

Can Claude generate images like Gemini?

Claude's pricing page does not list image generation. Gemini creates and edits images on the Free plan and adds video generation from AI Plus at $4.99 per month.

Which has a better free plan?

Gemini Free includes image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice, Canvas, Gems and 15 GB of storage on the Flash-Lite model. Claude Free includes Sonnet and Haiku, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, voice and up to 5 projects. Gemini Free has more tools; Claude Free has stronger text models.

Do Claude and Gemini train on my chats?

Claude lists model training as opt out on Free, Pro and Max and off by default on Team and Enterprise. Gemini uses chats to train models while Keep Activity is on; turning it off stops future training use, though chats are kept for 72 hours.
