Qwen Chat is one of the best free AI assistants in October 2026: Alibaba gives you its Qwen models with deep thinking, web search, multimodal input and image generation at no cost, with no paid tier to upsell. It suits budget users and developers testing Qwen. Skip it for work data, because the privacy policy is hard to review and many employers restrict tools from companies based in China.

Qwen Chat gives you Alibaba's latest Qwen models, reasoning, search and image generation free, with no paid tier to upsell. It is a strong free pick for curious users and developers, but the privacy policy loads only in a script, the app is not on the US App Store, and many employers restrict tools from companies based in China.

What it is

Qwen Chat is Alibaba's consumer chat app for its Qwen large language models, at chat.qwen.ai on the web and as an Android app that Google Play lists as Qwen Studio, published by Alibaba Cloud (Singapore). Alibaba launched a Qwen beta in April 2023 and opened it publicly in September 2023 after regulatory clearance. Wikipedia reports the Qwen app reached 234 million users by May 2026, a figure that includes Alibaba's apps in China.

The model family moves fast. Qwen3 arrived in April 2025 under Apache 2.0. Qwen3.5 followed in February 2026 as open weights plus a proprietary Plus version that Alibaba says can operate desktop and mobile apps. In August 2026 Alibaba released the weights of Qwen3.8 Max, a 2.4 trillion parameter mixture of experts model with about 95 billion parameters active per pass and up to a 1M token context, along with a distilled 27B model under the Apache license.

In China, Alibaba began connecting the chatbot to its commerce ecosystem in January 2026, starting with food delivery, with plans for Taobao and other services.

Pricing explained

Option Price What you get
Qwen Chat $0 Qwen models, deep thinking, search, multimodal input, image generation, with usage limits
Alibaba Cloud API Per token Proprietary Qwen models for developers
Open weights $0 to download Run Qwen models on your own hardware

There is no paid consumer plan listed. That is the main reason to try Qwen Chat: you get a large frontier class model and tools that rivals charge $8 to $20 per month for.

The limits are not published. A Google Play reviewer in August 2026 reported a daily time limit before reuse and the removal of a favorite model, so expect caps on heavy use.

For developers, Alibaba Cloud sells Qwen models by token. Wikipedia cites Qwen VL Max at $0.41 per million input tokens as one example. See the AI Price Index for how free plans compare.

Key features

Deep thinking

Qwen Chat includes a reasoning mode for hard problems, described on its Google Play listing as deep thinking that uses real time internet data to give logical, actionable answers.

Web search

Search pulls current results into answers, useful for news, prices and research.

Multimodal understanding

The app accepts text, images, audio and video, and can read charts, pull information from audio clips and combine inputs in one answer.

Image generation and editing

Qwen Image models handle generation and editing. Alibaba's August 2025 release notes highlight strong text rendering inside images, including multi line layouts, and the Qwen Image Edit model for precise text edits. A Google Play reviewer found a later image model weak at editing selfies.

Writing help

Creative and academic writing, outlining and editing are listed core capabilities.

Open model family

Because many Qwen models are open weights, you can test a model in Qwen Chat and then run the same family yourself or call it through Alibaba Cloud. That makes Qwen Chat a useful sandbox for developers.

What users say

  • Google Play: 4.1 from about 16,000 reviews, 5M+ downloads.
  • No US App Store listing was found.

Recurring praise: strong answers for free, capable image analysis and a wide model menu. Recurring complaints: mixed language input (for example Arabic and English) scrambling word order, which Alibaba's support team acknowledged in September 2026; daily usage limits; models being removed; slow prompt generation on the largest model; and inconsistent creative writing filters.

Privacy and security

Data safety label. Google Play's data safety section, provided by the developer, says no data is shared with third parties, data is encrypted in transit, and you can request deletion. The app may collect personal info and device IDs.

Privacy policy. Qwen Chat's privacy policy and terms load only through scripts on chat.qwen.ai, so we could not review the text in October 2026. We found no published training opt out.

Jurisdiction. The app is published by Alibaba Cloud (Singapore) Private Limited. Alibaba is headquartered in China, and many companies and government agencies restrict AI tools from China based firms. Check your employer's policy before using it for work.

For privacy first chat, Duck.ai anonymizes prompts and does not use them for training.

Who it is for

  • Budget users who want a capable reasoning model and image generation for free.
  • Developers evaluating Qwen before using the API or open weights.
  • Multilingual users, with the caveat on mixed language input.
  • Android users, since the app is on Google Play.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone handling confidential or regulated data.
  • Employees of organizations that restrict China based AI tools.
  • iPhone users who want a native app.
  • People who need predictable usage. Limits are unpublished.

Alternatives

  • DeepSeek: the other major free Chinese assistant, with a very low cost API.
  • Kimi: Moonshot AI's assistant with Agent Swarm research and a 1M token context, paid plans from $19.
  • Gemini: the most generous free plan from a US company, with Deep Research and Gemini Live.
  • ChatGPT: unlimited everyday chats on Free, Plus at $20.

Verdict

Qwen Chat is a strong free assistant with real reasoning, search, multimodal input and image generation, and it is a natural sandbox for Alibaba's open model family. Use it for personal projects and model testing. Keep work data out of it until Alibaba publishes a readable privacy policy, and pick Gemini or ChatGPT if you want a free plan from a company your employer already approves.
