Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Ruby costs $250 a month for 50 receptionist minutes, $395 for 100, $720 for 200 and $1,725 for 500, as listed in October 2026. That is $3.45 to $5.00 per minute for a live person on every call. Ruby does not publish its overage rate, billing increment or add on prices, so the real bill can run higher.

Ruby lists no setup, activation or customization fees and no long term contract.
What a minute means in practice
A Ruby minute is receptionist time on your calls. Message taking calls are short; law firm intake, service dispatch and anything with a script run longer. The table above shows how fast the minutes go: 200 minutes is 100 quick calls or 40 intakes.
Two things you do not know from the pricing page, and should ask:
- Billing increment. Ruby does not publish whether a 40 second call bills as 40 seconds, rounds up in 30 second steps, or rounds up to a full minute. On short calls, rounding to the full minute can add 20% or more.
- What else uses minutes. Transfers, outbound callbacks and robocalls that slip through all spend receptionist time. Some Trustpilot reviewers say robocall spikes pushed them toward larger plans.
Monthly bill at 200, 500 and 1,000 minutes
| Minutes a month | Ruby plan | Monthly bill | Per minute | About this many 2 minute calls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 | Popular | $720 | $3.60 | 100 |
| 500 | Enterprise | $1,725 | $3.45 | 250 |
| 1,000 | No published plan; Enterprise plus 500 minutes of unpublished overage | Quote | Unknown | 500 |
At 1,000 minutes, the 500 minute plan's own rate would put you near $3,450, but Ruby does not publish its overage rate, so ask for a custom quote. Run your call volume and length through the calculator to see the gap against AI options.
Hidden costs to plan for
Ruby markets "no hidden fees" for setup and customization, and that holds. But several services are add ons with no price on the page:
- Overage minutes. Not published.
- Spanish. Bilingual English and Spanish answering is an add on.
- HIPAA. HIPAA compliant receptionists are an add on.
- Payment collection. Add on.
- Outbound call assistance. Add on.
- Scheduling. Listed among add ons on the pricing page; confirm whether it is included on your plan.
- Chat. Separate plans, $115 to $520.
A bilingual medical office could need three of those, so get every line in a written quote.
Annual vs monthly
Ruby lists only monthly prices and no annual discount or prepay option on the pages we opened. No trial or money back guarantee is listed either.
How Ruby compares
Bills at the same volume, cheapest published plan, October 2026. Human services price in minutes or calls; AI tools are shown for scale.
| Service | Who answers | 200 minutes | 500 minutes | 1,000 minutes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ruby | Humans | $720 | $1,725 | Quote |
| Abby Connect | Humans (AI stretches minutes 2x) | $599 | $1,380 | Quote |
| Posh | AI and live, mixed minutes | $420 | $975 | Quote |
| Smith.ai AI with live backup | AI first | about $385 for 200 calls of any length | $800 for 500 calls | $1,850 for 1,000 calls |
| Rosie | AI only | $49 | $149 | $149 |
| Dialzara | AI only | $99 | $199 | $349 |
Ruby is the most expensive human option per minute in this group. Abby Connect undercuts it by about 17% at 200 minutes and 20% at 500 while adding AI answering on the same plan, and Posh runs about 42% to 43% less at both volumes. Against AI tools, Ruby costs 7 to 15 times as much. See every rate on the AI Price Index and the full decision in AI receptionist vs answering service.
How to keep the bill down
- Send Ruby only overflow and after hours calls, and let staff answer daytime calls.
- Ask Ruby to screen and end sales and spam calls quickly; robocalls use minutes.
- Give receptionists short scripts. Every extra intake question costs about $3.60 a minute.
- Move to Smith.ai or Abby Connect if a large share of calls are routine.
- Check usage weekly in the first month and size the plan from real data.
Is Ruby worth the price?
Ruby is worth it when every caller must reach a person and a single lost lead is worth more than a month of minutes, as in many law firms. Its 4.5 Trustpilot score from 853 reviews and 4.8 App Store rating from 338 support the quality. For routine calls it is hard to justify at $3.60 a minute when AI receptionists answer for $0.15 to $0.50. Read the Ruby review, compare Smith.ai vs Ruby or browse Ruby alternatives.
