What it is

Rythm was one of the largest Discord music bots until September 2021, when it was forced offline for pulling audio from YouTube, the same fate as Groovy. It relaunched in June 2024 as a Discord Activity with a full player UI, a collaborative queue and a visualizer, built on licensed music. MusicTech's launch coverage, quoting creator Yoav Zimet and co founder Oliy Barrett, put the catalog at about 50 million songs, with premium revenue shared with labels and publishers.

Rythm now runs in four places, per its docs:

  • Discord bot: invite it to a server and play in voice channels.
  • Discord Activity: launch it from any voice channel's Activities menu.
  • Web app: app.rythm.fm in any browser.
  • Desktop app: Windows and macOS.

Sign in with Discord or email, and your music, playlists and friends sync across devices. Its top.gg listing shows 19.7 million servers.

Rythm's premium docs say you can buy through Stripe at premium.rythm.fm (recommended) or the Discord Store. Cancelling keeps benefits until the billing period ends. Stripe subscribers get support from support@rythm.fm; Discord Store billing goes through Discord.

One subscriber upgrades the room. Premium benefits apply to everyone in a session while the subscriber is present, so a friend group needs only one Premium account.

Year one cost: $0 with ads, or about $59.88 a year at the $4.99 launch price. Compare FlaviBot's premium from about $4.49 (3.99 euros) a month and Green-bot from $3.75. See the Price Index.

Key features

Licensed catalog

The relaunched Rythm plays licensed music, so it is not exposed to the takedowns that killed the 2021 bot. Royalties are counted per listener, according to MusicTech's report of Music Ally's coverage.

Discord Activity and apps

The Activity gives everyone in a voice channel a shared player with album art, a collaborative queue and playback controls. The web and desktop apps add a discovery feed, social features showing what friends are listening to, and playlist import from other platforms.

Queue and playback commands

The command list covers /play, /playskip, /playtop, /search with five results, /like and /liked, /history, queue moves, removes, shuffles and duplicate removal, vote skip at 50% of listeners, forceskip, seek, rewind, loop and queue loop, and /control for a button panel. /leavecleanup removes tracks from people who left.

DJ permissions

Most queue and playback controls need DJ permissions. Members with Manage Server get them by default, and /settings sets a DJ role, default volume and song announcements. Volume runs from 1 to 200.

Smart autoplay

Autoplay suggests tracks so music never stops; Premium makes it unlimited.

Audio Effects Studio (Premium)

Bass boost, nightcore and manual bass, pitch and speed controls through /effects.

Rythm then and now

Rythm until 2021 Rythm since 2024
Music source Pulled from YouTube Licensed catalog, about 50 million songs at launch
Where it plays Discord bot Bot, Discord Activity, web app, Windows and Mac apps
Interface Text commands Full player UI, collaborative queue, visualizer
Licensing Unlicensed YouTube audio Premium revenue shared with labels and publishers

If you used Rythm before 2021, the commands will feel familiar, but the product is now closer to a social music app than a simple bot.

Setup

  1. Invite the bot from rythm.fm, or open the Activity from a voice channel.
  2. Run /start for the in app tutorial and /settings to set a DJ role.
  3. Join a voice channel and /play a song.
  4. Link Premium through premium.rythm.fm if you want ad free, higher quality audio.

What users say

Rythm rates 4.66 on top.gg from 755 reviews, ahead of Green-bot (3.99) and Jockie Music (4.63) and behind FlaviBot (4.86) among the music bots we compared. We report the score and count only; the listing could not be opened for review text this month.

Privacy and security

Rythm's social features show friends what you are listening to, so check your profile visibility if you prefer private listening. Accounts sign in with Discord or email, and Rythm links a privacy policy at rythm.fm/privacy. The bot needs voice permissions and message permissions for commands; it does not need moderation rights.

Who it is for

  • Friend groups who listen together in voice channels and want a real player UI.
  • Servers that want a licensed music bot that will not disappear in a takedown.
  • Listeners who want the same queue and playlists on web, desktop and Discord.

Who should skip it

  • Servers that want a free bot with more music sources and free radio: FlaviBot or Jockie Music.
  • Anyone who wants to see a price before signing in.
  • Servers that need many bot instances in different channels: Jockie Music runs up to 4 free.

Alternatives

Verdict

Rythm is the most polished way to listen together on Discord, and its licensing makes it the safest bet to stick around. The tradeoffs are ads on free and a premium price you only see after sign in. If you want a free, top rated music bot in a server today, FlaviBot is the better pick; if your group wants a shared player that feels like a real app, use Rythm.
