How credits work

Synthesia moved to credits as "the shared currency across all AI usage based features." Video creation costs 100 credits per minute, and the first 10 minutes each month are included on every plan. Dubbing draws from the same pool: about 10 minutes on Basic, 16 more on Starter and 78 more on Pro, according to the pricing page.

That means a minute you spend on dubbing is a minute you cannot spend on new video. Plan your credits around both.

Annual vs monthly

Yearly billing cuts Starter from $29 to $18 per month (38% off) and Pro from $89 to $64 (28% off). On yearly Starter you also get 15,000 credits for the year rather than 1,250 a month, and on Pro 72,000.

Cost per minute

Plan Monthly billing Yearly billing
Starter (about 22 minutes) About $1.32 per minute About $0.82 per minute
Pro (about 70 minutes) About $1.27 per minute About $0.91 per minute

These figures assume all credits go to video.

Synthesia vs filming a presenter

The usual comparison for a training team is not another AI tool but a camera crew. Filming means booking a presenter, a crew and an edit for every module, and every policy change means a reshoot. On Synthesia Pro billed yearly, $768 a year covers about 70 minutes a month, and an edit is a script change and a re-render. The tradeoffs are a 1080p ceiling, AI voices that can mispronounce industry terms, and moderation review before render. For evergreen compliance and onboarding content that changes often, the math favors Synthesia; for flagship brand films, a real shoot still wins.

Add ons and hidden costs

  • Studio Avatar: $1,000 per year, annual plans only.
  • Roleplay training seats: $29 per learner per month, or $25 billed yearly.
  • Syren AI video agent: Basic and Pro list 2,000 promotional credits; Syren videos run up to 3 minutes.
  • No published top up price. More credits means a higher plan or Enterprise.
  • 1080p only, even on Enterprise.

Worked examples

HR team making 4 onboarding videos of 5 minutes each a month. 20 minutes fits Starter (about 22). On yearly billing that is $216 a year.

L&D team producing 60 minutes of training a month plus some dubbing. Pro covers about 70 minutes; heavy dubbing pushes you toward Enterprise.

Company rolling out 500 learners on Roleplay. 500 x $25 = $12,500 per month on yearly billing, on top of the plan. Ask sales for volume terms.

How it compares

At $29 monthly, Synthesia Starter matches HeyGen Creator. Synthesia is cheaper on yearly billing ($18 vs $24) and publishes its credit rate; HeyGen offers 4K at $49 and a larger avatar library. Descript includes AI avatars in an editor from $16 per month on yearly billing. For narration only, ElevenLabs or Murf AI cost far less per minute. See the AI Price Index.

Which plan to pick

  • Testing: Basic.
  • A few training videos a month: Starter on yearly billing.
  • Regular L&D output or interactive video: Pro.
  • SCORM, SSO or unlimited minutes: Enterprise.
