Descript is the best AI powered editor for podcasts and talking head video. You edit the transcript and the audio and video follow, and paid plans add the Underlord AI co-editor, Studio Sound, voice clones and 4K export from $24 a month on yearly billing. The catch is opaque AI credits that do not roll over, and weak Trustpilot reviews.

The best AI editor for podcasts and talking head video: you edit the transcript and the video follows, and Underlord, Studio Sound and voice clones are built in from $16 a month on annual billing. AI credits are opaque and do not roll over, and Trustpilot reviews (2.6 from 290) are rough on credit drain, bugs and cancellations.

What it is
Descript is a desktop and web editor built around a transcript. Drop in a recording and Descript transcribes it; delete a sentence in the text and it disappears from the timeline. That makes rough cuts of interviews, podcasts, webinars and YouTube videos far faster than scrubbing a waveform.
On top of the editor sit AI tools. Underlord is an AI co-editor that can cut, caption, translate and build clips from a request. Studio Sound cleans noisy audio. Eye Contact redirects your gaze to the camera. Green Screen removes backgrounds. AI speech lets you type new words in a cloned voice or use stock voices, and AI avatars generate presenters. Rooms (formerly SquadCast) records remote guests.
Descript is not a text to video generator like Veo or Runway. It edits footage you already have and fills gaps with AI.
Pricing explained
Every plan has two allowances: media minutes (what you upload or record) and AI credits (what AI tools consume).
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | Media minutes | AI credits | Export | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 60 | 100 one time | 720p, watermark | 1 |
| Hobbyist | $24 | $16 | 600 (10 hours) | 400 | 1080p | 1 |
| Creator | $35 | $24 | 1,800 (30 hours) | 800 | 4K | 1 to 3 |
| Business | $65 | $50 | 2,400 (40 hours) | 1,500 | 4K | Up to 5 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Sized to team | Sized to team | 4K or 5K | Unlimited |
Prices are per person per month. Annual billing saves up to 35%, per the pricing page.
Hobbyist removes the watermark, adds 1080p, voice clones and full Underlord access. Creator adds 4K, unlimited stock media, 25+ stock voices and access to top ups. Business adds 60+ stock voices and room for up to 5 seats.
Top ups
Descript's help center lists top ups for Creator and Business only:
| Top up | Price | Per unit |
|---|---|---|
| 350 AI credits | $35 | $0.10 |
| 1,000 AI credits | $80 | $0.08 |
| 4,000 AI credits | $200 | $0.05 |
| 5 media hours | $25 | $5.00 per hour |
| 20 media hours | $80 | $4.00 per hour |
| 50 media hours | $150 | $3.00 per hour |
Top ups last 12 months and only kick in after your monthly allowance is gone. Monthly allowances do not roll over.
The credit question
The pricing page does not say what an AI credit buys. The help center says Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words cost at most 30 credits per file per application, manual AI features scale with media length, and Underlord costs vary by model and task. For a weekly hour long podcast with Studio Sound and filler removal on each episode, 4 episodes x 60 credits = 240 credits, well within Hobbyist's 400. Heavy Underlord or avatar use is where credits run out.
Key features
Text based editing
Edit the transcript like a document and the media follows. Remove filler words, "um"s and long pauses in one click. This is the core reason to buy Descript.
Underlord
Underlord is Descript's AI co-editor. You can ask it to edit video, add captions, translate content, create clips and apply skills you save, and revert any edit it makes. Creator lists 20+ AI tools.
Studio Sound
Studio Sound removes background noise and room echo and makes laptop mic recordings sound closer to a studio. It is capped at 30 credits per file per use.
AI speech and voice clones
Type a correction and Descript speaks it in your cloned voice, or use 25+ (Creator) or 60+ (Business) stock voices. The clone is built from a recorded consent statement.
Eye Contact, Green Screen and avatars
Eye Contact fixes gaze when you read a script. Green Screen removes the background without a physical screen. AI avatars and generated media draw from credits.
Rooms recording
Record remote guests in separate high quality tracks, which counts against media minutes.
Commercial rights and licensing
Paid plans export without a watermark and are used commercially by podcasters, YouTubers and marketing teams. Stock media is limited to the first 5 search results on Free, 12 on Hobbyist and unlimited on Creator and up.
The rule to know is voice cloning. Descript requires "explicit recorded authorization from the person whose voice will be used." The consent statement must be read in English even for other languages. Descript will not create clones for a deceased individual, a non consenting person, someone unable to record the statement, or audio from an AI or artificial source. A producer can create a clone on a host's behalf only with that host's recorded authorization. This is a stricter gate than tools that clone from any uploaded audio.
We found no lawsuits against Descript over training data or voice cloning in the sources we reviewed.
What users say
| Site | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 2.6 | 290 |
Trustpilot is split: 37% five star and 43% one star, and Descript responds to only 4% of negative reviews.
The praise focuses on the core idea: text based editing and transcription save hours. The complaints focus on four things: AI features that burn credits without good results (one reviewer reported spending 800 credits on filler pause cleanup), cancellation that is hard to find, desktop crashes during rendering, and support that replies with macros. These complaints track the credit system more than the editor itself.
Privacy and security
Descript's security page lists SOC 2 Type II compliance and alignment with GDPR and CCPA. Data at rest is encrypted with AES-256 and in transit with TLS 1.2. It says project files stay confidential, are not used for marketing or sold, and that AI features are opt in.
On training, the help center says "current AI models in production use no Descript user data." Internal research models only use data from users who opted into data sharing. To opt out, open App Settings, go to Profile and turn off "Share data with Descript."
Who it is for
- Podcasters editing interviews and shows weekly.
- YouTubers and course creators recording talking head video.
- Marketing teams cutting clips, captions and translations from webinars.
- Anyone who hates timelines and would rather edit text.
Who should skip it
- People who want to generate video from a prompt. Use Veo, Kling or Runway.
- Teams that need a fully avatar driven workflow. HeyGen or Synthesia are built for that.
- Anyone who needs predictable AI costs. Underlord pricing varies per request.
- Users who only need narration. ElevenLabs or Murf AI are cheaper for pure voice work.
Alternatives
- ElevenLabs: best voice quality and cloning for narration and dubbing.
- HeyGen: avatar videos and lip synced translation.
- Murf AI: voiceover studio for training and slides.
- CapCut: free short form editor with AI credits on Pro.

Verdict
Descript is still the fastest way to edit spoken word content, and Hobbyist at $16 a month on yearly billing is fair value for a weekly podcast. The AI layer is useful but opaque: credits do not roll over, Underlord costs vary, and top ups need Creator. Start on yearly Hobbyist if you mostly use Studio Sound and filler removal, move to Creator if you need 4K or top ups, and keep an eye on credits before you lean on Underlord.

ElevenLabs4.4Frequently asked questions
Is Descript free?
Yes. The Free plan includes 60 media minutes a month, 100 one time AI credits and limited access to Underlord, with 720p exports that carry a watermark. Stock media is limited to the first 5 search results.
How much does Descript cost?
Billed monthly, Hobbyist is $24, Creator $35 and Business $65 per person per month. Billed yearly they drop to $16, $24 and $50, which Descript says saves up to 35%. Enterprise is custom.
What are Descript media minutes and AI credits?
Media minutes are the time you upload or record, including video, audio and screen recordings. AI credits are spent when you use AI tools like Underlord, Studio Sound, filler word removal, Green Screen, Eye Contact, AI speech and avatars. Neither rolls over month to month.
How many credits does Underlord use?
Descript says Underlord pricing is non deterministic: it varies by model and task complexity, and two similar requests can cost different amounts. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words cost at most 30 credits per file per application.
Can I clone someone else's voice in Descript?
Only with that person's recorded authorization. Descript requires the speaker to read a consent statement in English, and it will not create clones of a deceased person, a non consenting person, or audio from an AI source.
Does Descript train AI on my content?
Descript's help center says current production AI models use no Descript user data. Internal research models only use data from users who opted into data sharing, which you can switch off in App Settings under Profile.
Can I buy more AI credits in Descript?
Yes, on Creator and Business. AI credit top ups are 350 for $35, 1,000 for $80 or 4,000 for $200, and media hour top ups are 5 hours for $25, 20 for $80 or 50 for $150. Top ups last 12 months and are used only after your monthly allowance runs out.
Is Descript good for podcasts?
Yes, it is one of the best tools for podcast editing. You edit the transcript to cut audio, remove filler words in one click, clean up audio with Studio Sound and record remote guests in Rooms.
