HeyGen Review 2026: Pricing, Features and Verdict
The most popular AI avatar video tool, judged on its published plans, credit system, consent rules, security and user ratings.
By , research by the BestBots team ยท Updated Oct 18, 2026
Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
HeyGen is the best AI avatar video tool for most marketers and creators. It has a real free plan, 1,100+ stock avatars, a digital twin from one short video, lip synced translation into 175+ languages and 4K from the $49 Pro plan. The tradeoff is its credit system: HeyGen does not publish how many credits a minute of video costs.

The best AI avatar tool for most marketers and creators: a free plan, 1,100+ stock avatars, a digital twin from one short video, 4K on the $49 Pro plan and the strongest user ratings in the category. Credits are the catch, since the pricing page does not say what a credit buys and heavy Avatar IV use drains them fast.

What it is
HeyGen turns a script into a video of a talking presenter. You pick a stock avatar, upload a photo, or build a digital twin of yourself from a short recording, then type or paste a script. HeyGen generates the speech, matches the lips to it and renders the video. The same engine translates existing videos into other languages and re-syncs the lips so the speaker appears to talk in the new language.
The product has grown well past talking heads. Avatar IV animates a single photo with natural expression and lip sync. Avatar V, HeyGen's digital twin technology, supports up to 500 outfits and settings with wide, medium and close-up shots. There are iOS and Android apps, a HeyGen Translate app and an API for teams that want to generate videos from their own systems.
HeyGen competes most directly with Synthesia, which targets corporate training, and with general video generators like Veo and Kling for short ad clips.
Pricing explained
HeyGen sells monthly plans with a credit allowance. Here is what the pricing page listed in October 2026.
| Plan | Price | Credits per month | Max video length | Max resolution | Watermark |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 3 videos | 1 minute | 1080p | Yes |
| Creator | $29 per month, $24 billed yearly | 600 | 30 minutes | 1080p | No |
| Pro | $49 per month | 1,000 | 30 minutes | 4K | No |
| Business | $149 per month plus $20 per seat | 1,500 | 60 minutes | 4K | No |
| Enterprise | Custom | Flexible | No cap | 4K | No |
Free gives you 3 videos a month of up to 1 minute each, 1 custom avatar and 30+ languages. It is enough to see whether your avatar looks right, not enough for a content calendar.
Creator is the plan most solo creators buy. It removes the watermark, lifts video length to 30 minutes, adds 1 voice clone and opens 175+ languages for translation.
Pro adds 4K export and expanded voice cloning for $20 more than Creator, and 400 more credits.
Business is built for teams: 1,500 credits, 60 minute videos, 5+ custom avatars and the option to buy one time credit packs or turn on auto reload. The $20 per seat fee means a 5 person team pays $149 + $100 = $249 per month.
Enterprise removes the duration cap and adds SAML SSO, SCIM, MFA enforcement, audit logs and 10+ custom avatars.
The credit problem
The pricing page says credits are "HeyGen's single currency for video and asset creation" and that use varies by model, duration and complexity. It does not print a per minute rate. That makes it hard to compare HeyGen with Synthesia, which publishes 100 credits per minute. In practice, plan for premium engines like Avatar IV to use far more credits than standard avatars, and watch the credit meter in the editor before you render a long script. Creator and Pro users who run short can only upgrade; Business users can buy packs.
Annual billing lowers Creator to $24 per month ($288 a year). HeyGen says annual subscribers also get better credit rollover. For the full plan math see HeyGen pricing.
Key features
Stock avatars
HeyGen lists 1,100+ stock avatars, described as diverse AI actors across ages, styles and settings, all cleared for commercial use. That is the largest library among the avatar tools we compared; Synthesia lists 240+ on Enterprise.
Digital twins
You record one short video and HeyGen builds a twin that captures your face, micro-expressions and presence. HeyGen says most twins are ready in 10 to 20 minutes. Avatar V twins support up to 500 outfits and settings and multiple shot types, so a single recording session can carry a whole course.
Photo avatars with Avatar IV
Avatar IV animates a still photo into a talking video with natural expression and lip sync. It is the fastest way to make a UGC style ad or a spokesperson clip without filming anyone, and also the feature most associated with heavy credit use in reviews.
Video translation
Upload a video and HeyGen translates the speech into 175+ languages and dialects, clones the speaker's voice and re-syncs the lips at the phoneme level. For marketing teams localizing ads or founders publishing in several markets, this is often the feature that justifies the subscription.
Voice cloning
Creator includes 1 voice clone, Pro expands it and Business offers the most. Voice clones pair with your twin so the avatar sounds like you.
API and apps
HeyGen offers an API billed in US dollars by avatar engine and video length, with rates shown in its developer dashboard rather than on the public pricing page. There are iOS and Android apps, with the main app rated 4.8 from 28,533 ratings on the App Store.
Commercial rights and licensing
HeyGen's pricing table marks commercial use as allowed on every plan, including Free. Its stock avatars are described as cleared for commercial use, so you can run them in ads.
The limits are about people, not plans. HeyGen's moderation policy requires the "explicit consent of the individual being represented," prohibits avatars of real individuals, including celebrities or public figures, without consent, and lets actors request removal of their likeness at any time. Digital twins need verified permission from the person being recreated. Biometric data used for avatars is processed on explicit consent obtained during avatar creation, per HeyGen's privacy policy.
HeyGen also bans political content, including content that promotes parties or candidates. Violations can lead to content removal or account suspension, and appeals go by email with no guaranteed response.
Two things to check before you rely on HeyGen output for a client. First, HeyGen's privacy policy says user generated content may be stored, displayed and used by HeyGen, so read the terms if your scripts are confidential. Second, the security page we read did not mention C2PA content credentials, so do not assume HeyGen videos carry provenance metadata the way Runway or Veo outputs do. We found no lawsuits against HeyGen over training data in the sources we reviewed.
What users say
HeyGen has the strongest ratings of any AI avatar tool we compared.
| Site | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 4.2 | 4,620 |
| App Store | 4.8 | 28,533 |
On Trustpilot 69% of reviews are five stars. The recurring praise is speed and ease: non technical users say they can produce course videos and multilingual content without a studio. The recurring complaint is credits. Reviewers say premium features consume credits quickly and they run out mid project. Some report occasional voice glitches with certain avatars and trouble with pronunciation of URLs and compound words, which you can usually fix with phonetic spelling in the script.
Privacy and security
HeyGen's security page lists SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, CCPA, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and the EU AI Act. Data in transit uses TLS 1.2 or higher and data at rest uses AES-256.
On training, HeyGen says Enterprise customers' data is excluded from model training by default and non Enterprise customers may opt out at any time. Its agreements with AI subprocessors prohibit them from training on customer data. If you are on Creator, Pro or Business and want your footage kept out of training, opt out in writing.
Enterprise adds SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, MFA and audit logs.
Who it is for
- Marketers and agencies making talking head ads, UGC style spots and product explainers at volume.
- Creators and coaches who want a digital twin to publish YouTube videos and courses without filming every week.
- Companies going multilingual that need lip synced translation into many languages.
- Small teams that want a free plan to try before paying.
Who should skip it
- Corporate L&D teams that need SCORM and strict review workflows. Synthesia is built for that.
- Anyone who needs predictable per minute costs. HeyGen does not publish its credit rates.
- Filmmakers who want cinematic scenes, not presenters. Use Veo, Runway or Kling.
- Podcasters editing real footage. Descript is a better editor.
Alternatives
- Synthesia: stricter moderation, SCORM export and API on every plan, but 1080p only. See HeyGen vs Synthesia.
- Descript: an editor first, with AI avatars and voice clones as add ons.
- ElevenLabs: the voice layer if you only need narration or dubbing.
- Veo: native audio video generation for scenes rather than presenters.
For the full list see HeyGen alternatives and the best AI avatar generators.
Verdict
HeyGen is the AI avatar tool to start with. The free plan is usable, Creator at $29 covers most solo creators, Pro at $49 adds 4K for less than most rivals charge for 1080p, and the ratings are the best in the category. Go in knowing that credits are the variable: test your typical script length on Creator for a month, watch the meter, and only move up to Pro or Business once you know your real usage.

Canva AI4.2Frequently asked questions
Is HeyGen free?
Yes. HeyGen's Free plan gives you 3 videos a month, each up to 1 minute, at 1080p with a HeyGen watermark. You get 1 custom avatar and 30+ languages. To remove the watermark and make longer videos you need Creator at $29 per month.
How much does HeyGen cost per month?
Creator is $29 per month or $24 per month billed yearly, Pro is $49 per month, and Business is $149 per month plus $20 per seat. Enterprise is quoted by sales. All prices are from HeyGen's pricing page in October 2026.
How many credits does a HeyGen video use?
HeyGen does not publish a fixed rate on its pricing page. It says credit use depends on the AI model, the video length and the complexity of the generation. Premium engines like Avatar IV use more credits than standard avatars, which is the most common complaint in user reviews.
Can I use HeyGen videos commercially?
Yes. HeyGen's pricing table marks commercial use as allowed on every plan, including Free, and says its stock avatars are cleared for commercial use. You still cannot create an avatar of a real person, including a celebrity, without their explicit consent.
How do I make a HeyGen digital twin?
Record one short video of yourself and upload it. HeyGen says most twins are ready in 10 to 20 minutes and require verified permission from the person being recreated. The twin is tied to your workspace and can be removed at the actor's request.
Is HeyGen safe and secure?
HeyGen lists SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, CCPA, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and the EU AI Act on its security page, with TLS 1.2+ in transit and AES-256 at rest. Enterprise data is excluded from model training by default; other users can opt out.
Does HeyGen support 4K?
Yes, on Pro ($49 per month) and above. Free and Creator export at up to 1080p.
HeyGen or Synthesia?
HeyGen is the better pick for marketing, social ads and creators because it is cheaper per credit, offers 4K and has a larger stock avatar library. Synthesia is the safer pick for corporate training thanks to SCORM export and strict moderation. See our [HeyGen vs Synthesia](/heygen-vs-synthesia) comparison.
