Tesla Optimus Review 2026: Status, Price Claims and Can You Buy One
A status explainer, not a product review: what Tesla and Elon Musk have said about Optimus, what has happened, and what a buyer can do today, as of October 2026.
By , research by the BestBots team · Updated Oct 18, 2026
Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
You cannot buy a Tesla Optimus in October 2026. Tesla has no order page, deposit or published price, and its past sales timelines have slipped. If you want a humanoid at home now, the 1X NEO is the only one with an announced consumer price and a refundable preorder. This page tracks what Tesla has said and done, with sources.

Optimus is not something you can buy: Tesla has not opened orders, and Musk's sale timelines (external sales in 2026, 5,000 units in 2025) have slipped before. Treat any price as a target, not an offer, until Tesla publishes an order page.

What it is
Optimus is Tesla's general purpose humanoid robot program. Generation 2, shown in December 2023, slimmed the body and improved the hands, and by 2024 Tesla's newer hands reached 22 degrees of freedom. Published Gen 2 figures put Optimus at 5 ft 8 in and 125 lbs, with a carrying capacity of about 45 lbs.
Tesla's stated plan is to use Optimus first in its own factories and then sell it. The open question for buyers is when, at what price, and with how much real autonomy.

| October 2024 | We, Robot event: robots mainly used teleoperation with crowds; about $30,000 price cited | Wikipedia, citing The Verge and VentureBeat |
| June 2025 | Optimus program head Milan Kovac leaves; Ashok Elluswamy takes over | Wikipedia, citing Reuters |

TechCrunch's 2024 report also noted that Musk had earlier suggested production could begin in 2023, a date that passed.
Pricing explained
There is no price to explain yet. Tesla has not published one or taken deposits. The figure most often repeated, about $30,000, traces to reporting from the October 2024 We, Robot event. Musk has talked about lower long run targets at mass production volumes, but those are aspirations, not offers.
For a buyer, the practical comparison is with robots that publish terms: 1X NEO at an announced $20,000 or $499 per month, and Unitree's research humanoids at listed prices of $13,500 (G1) and from $4,900 (R1). See how much a humanoid robot costs.
Key features
Hands
Tesla's newer hands have 22 degrees of freedom, double the 11 of the Gen 2 hands shown in December 2023. Dexterous hands are the hardest part of a useful humanoid, and Tesla has put a lot of its public demos here.
Factory work first
Tesla said in July 2024 that Optimus was handling batteries autonomously in its facilities. Internal use gives Tesla a controlled place to collect data and prove reliability before selling to anyone.
Manufacturing scale
Tesla's advantage on paper is building things at volume. The Q1 2026 call described Fremont lines being installed for 1 million units a year, and the September 2026 credit lines are explicitly tied to scaling Optimus. No delivery counts have been published.
Autonomy
Tesla has not published an autonomy specification for Optimus. The October 2024 event showed the gap between demo and autonomy: critics noted the robots mainly used teleoperation and Tesla was not clear about it at the time.
What users say
There are no owners. Optimus has no consumer listing, app or verified rating base.
Privacy and security
Tesla has not published consumer privacy terms for Optimus because it is not sold to consumers. Before any purchase, look for answers to the questions 1X already answers for NEO: when remote operators can connect, what camera data leaves the home, whether it is used for training and whether you can opt out.

How to read Musk's timelines
Musk's statements on Optimus are forecasts, and the record shows they move. In July 2024 he said 2025 would bring internal use and 2026 sales to other companies. In July 2025 a report showed Tesla far behind its 2025 build goal, and Musk spoke of starting Optimus 3 production in early 2026. In April 2026 the message was production lines being installed. None of those statements included a consumer order date.
For a buyer, the useful rule is simple: wait for an order page with a price, a delivery window and written terms. Until then, numbers in headlines are targets.
Who it is for
- Investors and industry watchers tracking humanoid progress.
- Businesses that may be early commercial customers once Tesla sells externally.
Who should skip it
- Any household that wants a humanoid in 2026. There is nothing to order.
- Anyone relying on a specific Optimus price or date for planning.
Alternatives
- 1X NEO: announced $20,000 or $499 per month, $200 refundable deposit, US deliveries in 2026. See Tesla Optimus vs 1X NEO.
- Figure 03: published production and home task results, no consumer sales. See Tesla Optimus vs Figure 03.
- Unitree G1: on sale now at a listed $13,500 for research and development.
Verdict
Optimus may become the highest volume humanoid in the world, and Tesla's manufacturing scale and financing make that plausible. As a product for buyers in October 2026, it does not exist: no price, no order page, no delivery counts, and a record of public timelines that moved. We will update this page when Tesla opens orders or publishes specs and terms. Until then, it is a program to watch, not a robot to plan around.

Can you buy a Tesla Optimus robot?
No. As of October 2026 Tesla has no order page, deposit or published price for Optimus. Musk's July 2024 plan put sales to other companies in 2026, but Tesla has not opened consumer orders.
How much will Tesla Optimus cost?
Tesla has not published a price. A figure of about $30,000 was reported from the October 2024 We, Robot event, and Musk has spoken about lower long run targets at scale. Treat any number as a target until Tesla opens orders.
When will Tesla Optimus be released?
Tesla has not set a consumer release date. Musk said in July 2024 that Tesla would use Optimus internally in 2025 and sell to other companies in 2026. Reporting in July 2025 showed Tesla well behind its 2025 build target, and Tesla's 2026 statements focus on building production lines.
What can Tesla Optimus do?
Tesla's July 2024 earnings materials said Optimus was already performing autonomous tasks such as handling batteries in Tesla facilities. Public demos have also used teleoperation: at the October 2024 We, Robot event, robots mainly interacted with crowds by remote control, and Tesla was criticized for not saying so clearly.
How tall is Tesla Optimus?
Published Gen 2 figures are 5 ft 8 in and 125 lbs with a carrying capacity of about 45 lbs. Tesla's newer hands have 22 degrees of freedom.
Is Tesla Optimus better than Figure 03 or 1X NEO?
On what a buyer can verify, no. 1X NEO has an announced $20,000 price and a refundable preorder. Figure has published production numbers (350+ Figure 03 units delivered from its factory by April 2026) and home task results. Tesla has published neither a price nor delivery counts.
Where will Tesla build Optimus?
According to the Q1 2026 earnings call transcript cited on Wikipedia, Musk said Fremont lines were being installed for 1 million units a year, with a Gigafactory Texas line for far higher volume starting in 2027. TechCrunch reported in September 2026 that Tesla secured $30 billion in new credit lines to scale Cybercab and Optimus.
