What it is
NEO is a 5 ft 6 in, 66 lb humanoid from 1X Technologies built for household chores. It has a soft body made from a custom lattice polymer, no exposed pinch points, and 22 degree of freedom hands (1X published details of 25 DOF tendon driven hands in July 2026). It runs 1X's Redwood AI, a generalist model for learning and repeating tasks, and takes instructions by natural conversation or from the 1X app.
1X positions NEO as a helping hand: opening the door, laundry, tidying, fetching, with walking, sitting, standing, kneeling and stair climbing. It is not waterproof (the hands are), it is meant for indoor use on firm ground, and cooking is restricted at launch.
Pricing explained
Unlike the other home robots on BestBots, NEO is not sold on Amazon and 1X publishes its terms, so we list them. These are announced preorder terms from 1X's order page, not a retail price for a shipped product.
| Option | Announced price | What 1X lists |
|---|---|---|
| Early Access (own) | $20,000 one time | Priority delivery, 3 year warranty, no extra subscription required |
| Subscription | $499 per month | Starter Productivity Package, standard delivery; extend or return at term end |
| Deposit | $200 | Fully refundable until NEO is ready for delivery |
The math: at $499 per month, the subscription reaches the $20,000 purchase price in about 40 months, or 3 years and 4 months. If you expect to keep NEO longer than that and the 3 year warranty matters, buying wins on paper. If you want to try a first generation humanoid without committing, the subscription caps your downside.
Running costs, per 1X: under $1 a day in electricity from a 0.75 kWh battery. 1X recommends maintenance by its team and offers mobile 1X Service support. See the humanoid robot cost guide for how NEO compares with Unitree's listed prices and Tesla's and Figure's targets.
Key features
Body and safety
The soft lattice polymer body and joints without pinch points are 1X's core safety pitch, and NEO runs at 22 dB, which 1X says is quieter than a modern refrigerator. 1X still tells owners to stay attentive during operation, especially around children, vulnerable people or pets.
Strength and runtime
1X lists a 154 lb lift capacity, 55 lb carry capacity and 18 lb arm payload, a 1.4 m/s walking speed and a 4 hour battery. NEO connects itself to its charger when needed.
Degrees of freedom
Hands 22 per hand, arms 7 per arm, neck 3, spine 2, legs 6 per leg, per the spec section of the NEO page.
Redwood AI and Expert Mode
NEO works autonomously by default. When you ask for a chore it does not know, you can schedule a 1X Expert to guide it remotely, and that session teaches NEO for next time. Experts are 1X employees physically in the US. They cannot connect at will: you schedule the time and accept them into your robot by voice or the app, NEO's ear rings change color while they are active, and you control each session. 1X also lists remote control from the app and a VR device.
Sensors and connectivity
Dual 8.85 MP 90 Hz stereo fisheye cameras, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 5G. 1X recommends home Wi-Fi for best performance.
Over the air updates
1X says NEO starts with essentials and adds capabilities through software updates, so what it can do autonomously on delivery day is a floor, not a ceiling.
What users say
There are no verified owner ratings yet. NEO has no App Store, Amazon or Trustpilot listing with reviews we could count, and 1X had not published delivery numbers in its July 2026 updates. Treat all capability claims as 1X's own until owners report back.
Privacy and security
This is the section to read twice, because NEO has cameras that move around your home.
- Remote Experts: only when you schedule and accept them, with a visible ear ring indicator, per 1X's FAQ.
- Data use: data from real world tasks refines NEO's base intelligence and safety. 1X says it does not use this data to build a profile of you and does not sell it.
- Opt out: you can opt out of sharing data to improve NEO.
- Autonomous mode: limited sensor data may be sent to 1X's servers to fulfill a request and is not stored, per 1X.
Regulatory note: NEO is made in California. The FCC's July 2026 Covered List action targets foreign produced advanced robotic devices, so a US built humanoid sits outside the rule's main target, though 1X has not published its own statement on it.
Buy or subscribe
| Question | Buy ($20,000, announced) | Subscribe ($499 per month, announced) |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | $20,000 (reserve with a $200 refundable deposit) | Monthly payments (same $200 deposit to reserve) |
| Break even | Cheaper than subscribing after about 40 months | Cheaper if you keep NEO under about 40 months |
| Warranty | 3 years listed for Early Access | Not listed on the order page |
| Delivery priority | Priority delivery | Standard delivery, after Early Access buyers |
| End of term | You own it | Extend or return |
| Extra subscription | Not required, per 1X | Included in the monthly fee |
The subscription is the better fit for most curious households, because NEO's capabilities depend on software that will change a lot in its first years. Buying makes sense if you want priority delivery and expect to keep it past the 3 year warranty.
Who it is for
- Early adopters in the US who want a home humanoid now and accept first generation limits.
- Households comfortable with scheduled remote operators for unfamiliar chores.
- Buyers who want to try before owning, through the $499 per month subscription.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who wants full autonomy on day one.
- Homes where cameras and remote operators are a hard no.
- Buyers outside the US.
- People who need cooking, outdoor work or wet tasks.
Alternatives
- Unitree G1: on sale now at a listed $13,500, but a research and developer platform, not a chores robot.
- Tesla Optimus: not for sale; see Tesla Optimus vs 1X NEO.
- Figure 03: built for homes and work, no consumer sales date.

Verdict
NEO is the first humanoid a household can actually reserve with a published price, refundable deposit and data terms, and that alone puts it ahead of Tesla and Figure for consumers. The specs are credible for home work: 154 lb lift, 4 hour runtime, soft body, 22 dB. What you are really buying in 2026 is early access to a robot that will rely on human Experts for many chores while its autonomy grows. If that trade is clear to you, the subscription is the lower risk way in. If you want a robot that does your chores alone today, no humanoid on the market does that yet.

How much does the 1X NEO cost?
1X's order page lists $20,000 to buy NEO through Early Access, with a 3 year warranty, or $499 per month as a subscription. You reserve with a $200 deposit. These are announced preorder terms, not a shipped retail price.
When will the 1X NEO ship?
1X says US deliveries begin in 2026, starting with Early Access customers who buy, followed by subscribers. International deliveries will come later. As of its July 2026 posts, 1X had not published a count of delivered units.
Is the 1X NEO deposit refundable?
Yes. 1X says preorder deposits are fully refundable up to the point your NEO is ready for delivery.
Is the 1X NEO fully autonomous?
Not for everything. 1X says NEO works autonomously by default and arrives with basic autonomy, then learns. For chores it does not know, you can schedule a 1X Expert, a 1X employee in the US, to remotely guide it. Experts cannot connect unless you schedule and accept the session, and NEO's ear rings change color while one is active.
What can the 1X NEO do?
1X shows it opening doors, doing laundry and tidying, with natural walking, sitting, kneeling and stair climbing. Cooking is restricted at launch. It can lift 154 lbs, carry 55 lbs and hold about 18 lbs per arm.
Do I need a subscription if I buy NEO?
No. 1X says that if you purchase NEO rather than subscribe, no additional subscription is required.
What does 1X do with my data?
1X says data from real world tasks refines NEO's intelligence and safety, that it does not build a profile of you or sell your data, and that you can opt out of sharing for improvement. In autonomous mode, limited sensor data may be sent to its servers to fulfill a request and is not stored, per its FAQ.
How much does it cost to run NEO?
1X says NEO has a 0.75 kWh battery and expects it to run for under $1 a day at standard retail electricity rates. It plugs into a normal outlet and docks itself to charge.
Where is NEO made?
1X says NEO is manufactured in California, at a factory in Hayward it describes as vertically integrated.
