Alexa+ is the best AI voice assistant for Prime households in October 2026. It costs nothing extra with Prime, runs on Echo, Fire TV, the Alexa app and Alexa.com, and books, orders and controls devices through named partners. Without Prime it is $19.99 per month. The tradeoff: Echo voice requests all go to Amazon's cloud now.

By Amazon

Alexa+ is the strongest voice assistant for running a home: it books, orders and controls devices through partners like OpenTable, Uber, Ticketmaster and Grubhub, and Prime members pay nothing extra. The tradeoff is privacy, since Echo voice requests now all go to Amazon's cloud and the assistant is built to keep you inside Amazon's store.

What it is

Alexa+ is Amazon's rebuilt Alexa, powered by large language models instead of the scripted commands of the original. Amazon announced it on February 26, 2025, rolled it out through an early access program, and made it available to everyone in the US on February 4, 2026. It reached the web as Alexa.com in January 2026, and Amazon's July 2026 update lists full availability in the US and Canada with early access in the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Austria, France, Italy and Spain.

The assistant lives in four places: Echo speakers and Echo Show displays, Fire TV, the redesigned Alexa app (which now opens on a chat screen), and Alexa.com in a browser. Conversations and shared information follow you between them, so a recipe you save on Alexa.com shows up on an Echo Show in the kitchen.

Amazon says Alexa+ uses large language models available on Amazon Bedrock. Anthropic confirmed in February 2025 that Claude models are part of Alexa+, and Amazon has its own Nova models. Amazon does not tell you which model answers which request.

Pricing explained

Option Price What you get
Prime member $0 on top of Prime Unlimited Alexa+ on Echo, Fire TV, the app and Alexa.com
No Prime, free $0 Alexa+ on Alexa.com and the Alexa app with usage limits
No Prime, paid $19.99 per month Full Alexa+ access, listed in the app as Alexa+ Standard Monthly

Three things matter here.

Prime is the real price. Amazon states that all Prime members get Alexa+ free. If you already pay for Prime for shipping or Prime Video, the AI costs you nothing. If you do not, the standalone price of $19.99 per month lands in the same range as ChatGPT Plus at $20 and Gemini's Google AI Pro at $19.99, and a Prime membership is usually the better buy because it bundles everything else.

The free tier is web and app only. TechCrunch reported in February 2026 that people without Prime can use Alexa+ free on the web and in the mobile app with usage limits. Amazon does not publish what those limits are. Echo devices without Prime need the paid plan for full Alexa+.

Hidden costs are in the partners, not the assistant. Alexa+ can order from Grubhub and Uber Eats, book an Uber, buy Ticketmaster tickets or hire through Thumbtack. Those services charge their own prices and fees. Alexa+ also adds items to Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods carts, which is convenient and also exactly where Amazon makes money.

For how this compares with every other assistant's price, see the Alexa+ pricing breakdown and the AI Price Index.

Key features

Natural conversation and multi step requests

The old Alexa needed exact phrasing. Alexa+ handles ordinary speech, follow ups and several requests in one sentence. Amazon lists personality styles you can pick (Brief, Chill, Sweet and Sassy), and after beta feedback about chattiness it added voice options and an "Is that for me?" check that cuts down on unwanted interruptions, per TechCrunch.

Agentic tasks through partners

This is where Alexa+ is ahead of Siri and Gemini for Home. Amazon names reservations through OpenTable and Vagaro, food delivery through Grubhub and Uber Eats, rides through Uber, event tickets through Ticketmaster and local services through Thumbtack. TechCrunch's January 2026 report adds Angi, Expedia, Square and Yelp. Amazon also says Alexa+ can complete web based tasks on its own when no partner exists.

Household memory, documents and calendars

You can share documents, emails and calendar access, and upload files or photos for Alexa+ to summarize and act on. Amazon's examples are family centered: children's schedules, pet vaccination dates, recipes and shopping lists. Shared items display on Echo Show screens.

Smart home control

Alexa+ controls the same devices as Alexa, and Amazon's announcement names Philips Hue and Roborock among partners. It understands looser requests, so "make it cozy in here" can map to lights and temperature without a routine you built by hand.

Music and entertainment

Amazon lists Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music and iHeartRadio. During the beta Amazon reported music streams up 25% and recipe use up 5x compared with the original Alexa, and two to three times more conversations. Those are Amazon's own figures.

Alexa.com and the app

The web version works like ChatGPT or Gemini in a browser, with a sidebar for frequent tasks like the thermostat, calendar and shopping list. The app was rebuilt around chat. This matters if you want Alexa+ without buying an Echo at all.

What users say

The Amazon Alexa app holds 4.5 on the App Store from about 5.9 million ratings, the largest review base of any assistant on BestBots after ChatGPT. That rating covers the app as a whole, not Alexa+ alone.

Amazon reported "tens of millions" of customers with Alexa+ access by January 2026, and that only single digit percentages chose to revert to the old Alexa during testing. Earlier, Amazon's CEO put users at 100,000 in May 2025 and over a million by June 2025, per TechCrunch.

Recurring praise in coverage: Alexa finally understands normal speech, handles follow ups, and does real errands. Recurring complaints from the beta: it talks too much, early voice quality was uneven, and it interrupts. Amazon has responded with shorter personality styles and voice options. We found no large independent rating source for Alexa+ specifically.

Privacy and security

This is the weakest part of the package, and you should know three facts before you buy.

Local processing ended. On March 28, 2025, Amazon removed the "Do Not Send Voice Recordings" setting from the Echo Dot (4th gen), Echo Show 10 and Echo Show 15, saying generative AI features rely on its cloud. Every Alexa+ voice request goes to Amazon.

Regulators have acted before. In May 2023 the FTC and Department of Justice charged Amazon with violating the children's privacy law COPPA by keeping children's Alexa voice recordings and using them to train algorithms. Amazon paid a $25 million civil penalty and agreed to delete data.

Controls exist. Amazon points to the Alexa Privacy dashboard, which shows your Alexa+ interactions and settings and lets you review and delete recordings. Alexa+ runs on AWS infrastructure. Amazon does not publish an opt out from model training for Alexa+ on its announcement page, so assume your interactions inform product improvement unless your privacy settings say otherwise.

If privacy is your top concern, Siri with Private Cloud Compute is the stronger choice. See Alexa+ vs Siri.

Who it is for

  • Prime households with Echo devices. You pay nothing extra and every Echo in the house gets smarter.
  • Families coordinating schedules, lists and recipes. The shared memory and Echo Show displays are built for this.
  • People who want an assistant that does errands. Food, rides, tickets, reservations and local services all have named partners.
  • Fire TV users who want to find shows by describing them.

Who should skip it

  • Privacy first users. Cloud only processing and Amazon's COPPA penalty are hard to ignore.
  • iPhone households without Echo devices. Siri AI is free on your phone and knows your messages and photos.
  • Google Nest homes. Gemini for Home comes free on your existing speakers. See Alexa+ vs Gemini for Home.
  • People who want a chatbot for work. Alexa+ has no image generation, no coding tools and no team plan. ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini fit better.

Alternatives

  • Gemini for Home: free on Nest speakers, Gemini Live from $10 per month.
  • Siri: free on Apple Intelligence devices with on device and Private Cloud Compute privacy.
  • ChatGPT: the best voice chat for conversation and learning, but no smart home control.
  • Gemini: free Gemini Live on your phone.

The full list is in Alexa+ alternatives, and the ranked roundup is best AI voice assistants.

Verdict

For a Prime member with Echo devices, Alexa+ is an easy yes: it costs nothing, works across the house and does more real tasks than any other voice assistant we compared. For everyone else the math changes. At $19.99 per month without Prime, it is priced like a premium chatbot without the chatbot features, and the privacy record argues for caution. Use the free web version first, and keep Alexa Privacy settings tight.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alexa+ free?

Yes for Prime members, who get Alexa+ at no extra cost on Echo devices, Fire TV, the Alexa app and Alexa.com. Without Prime you can use it free on Alexa.com and in the app with usage limits, or pay $19.99 per month for full access.

How much does Alexa+ cost without Prime?

$19.99 per month, listed in the Alexa app as Alexa+ Standard Monthly. That is the same price range as ChatGPT Plus, so for most households a Prime membership is the cheaper way in because it bundles shipping and Prime Video too.

Is Alexa+ worth it?

If you already pay for Prime and own Echo devices, yes, because it costs nothing extra and adds natural conversation, multi step tasks and partner bookings. If you do not have Prime and mostly want a chatbot, ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude give you more for a similar or lower price.

Which Echo devices support Alexa+?

Amazon lists Echo speakers and Echo Show displays, including the Show 8, Show 11 and Echo Dot models, plus Fire TV and some Samsung and Bose devices. Amazon does not publish a full compatibility list on its announcement page, so check the Alexa app on your device.

What AI model does Alexa+ use?

Amazon says Alexa+ uses large language models on Amazon Bedrock. Anthropic has confirmed Claude models are part of Alexa+, and Amazon has its own Nova models. Amazon does not say which model handles which request.

Can I go back to the old Alexa?

Yes, for now. TechCrunch reported in February 2026 that customers can still roll back to the original Alexa, though Amazon did not say how long that option will last. Only single digit percentages of beta users chose to revert.

Does Alexa+ record everything I say?

Echo devices send voice requests to Amazon's cloud after the wake word. Since March 28, 2025, Amazon no longer offers the local processing option on Echo Dot (4th gen), Echo Show 10 and Echo Show 15. You can review and delete recordings in the Alexa Privacy dashboard.

Is Alexa+ available outside the US?

Amazon lists full availability in the US and Canada and early access in the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Austria, France, Italy and Spain as of its July 2026 update.
