Siri AI in iOS 27 is the best assistant for iPhone owners in October 2026: it is free, reads personal context across your messages, photos and notes, takes actions in apps, and keeps that data out of storage through Private Cloud Compute. The limits are real, though. It is still labeled beta, English only at launch, skips the EU, and needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

By Apple

Siri AI is the best assistant for iPhone owners who want help that knows their messages, photos and notes without sending that data to an ad company, and it costs nothing. The catch is that it is still labeled beta, starts in English only, skips the EU at launch, needs an Apple Intelligence capable device, and Apple says expanded access will cost a fee later.

What it is

Siri AI is Apple's rebuilt Siri, announced at WWDC on June 8, 2026, opened to the iOS 27 public beta in July and shipped with iOS 27 in September. Apple calls it a more capable and personal assistant: you can type or talk naturally, it understands what is on screen, it finds things across your apps, and it acts in apps like Messages, Music and Reminders. For questions about the wider world it references online information.

It comes with a dedicated Siri app that keeps conversations synced across your devices, lets you pin chats you return to, and lets you start on iPhone and continue on iPad. That app is Apple's answer to ChatGPT and Gemini as standalone chat apps.

Under the hood, Apple and Google announced a multi year, non exclusive deal on January 12, 2026: Apple's next generation of Apple Foundation Models is based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. Apple stresses that Siri still runs on device where it can and in Private Cloud Compute when it cannot. Reports put the deal around $1 billion a year; neither company confirmed a price.

Siri AI took a long road. Apple first promised a more personal Siri with Apple Intelligence in 2024, delayed it in March 2025, and reportedly delayed it again in February 2026. In May 2026 Apple agreed to pay $250 million to settle a false advertising class action over those delays.

Pricing explained

Option Price Limits
Siri AI on a supported device $0 Daily usage limits on features that use server side models
Expanded access Fee announced, price not published Apple says it will be available "for a fee in the future"

Siri AI costs nothing beyond the device. That is the headline, and it matters: Alexa+ is $19.99 per month without Prime, and Gemini Live on Google speakers needs a $10 per month Google Home Premium plan.

Two caveats. First, Apple's terms say features that rely on server side models, including Siri AI, photo editing, Image Playground and cloud based shortcuts, are subject to daily usage limits. Apple does not publish the numbers. Second, Apple states that expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. So the free price is today's price, not a promise.

The real cost is hardware. Siri AI needs Apple Intelligence, which means an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, an M1 or newer iPad or Mac, or Apple Vision Pro. If you are on an iPhone 14 or older, iOS 27 runs on your phone but Siri AI does not.

Key features

Personal context across your apps

Siri AI searches your photos, email and notes to answer questions about your own life, like when a flight lands or what a friend recommended. This is the feature no third party assistant can match on an iPhone, because only Apple has system access to that data.

On-screen awareness and actions in apps

Siri understands what you are looking at and acts on it. TechCrunch's reviewer described asking about World Cup lineups on screen and having Siri identify drinks at a restaurant. Siri can draft and send messages, follow complex multi step directions and work inside apps like Messages, Music and Reminders. Since iOS 27, Spotify users can ask Siri to play music without saying "on Spotify," per TechCrunch.

The Siri app

A standalone chat app with synced history, pinned conversations and cross device continuity. It turns Siri from a voice trigger into a place you go to think through a task.

Voice options

Apple lets you adjust Siri's voice by pitch, speed, tone and accent.

Apple Intelligence tools around Siri

Siri AI sits inside Apple Intelligence, which adds Write with Siri for drafts and edits, Visual Intelligence through the camera, Image Playground and Image Wand for images, Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, Call Context during business calls, and photo tools like Clean Up, Extend and Spatial Reframing. Apple TV 4K also gained Siri AI with remote free voice commands in October 2026.

What users say

Apple does not publish a rating for Siri, and there is no App Store listing to rate. Coverage is the best signal we have.

TechCrunch's September 2026 review was positive: the writer said he uses Siri again for queries he used to take to ChatGPT or Gemini, praised multi step directions and on screen context, and noted some accuracy hiccups in early builds, trouble picking the right note, and photo tools like Reframe and Extend that do not always work well. A TechCrunch column in August 2026 called the fix anticlimactic after years of delay.

The recurring complaint across 2024 to 2026 was that Siri lagged rivals. The recurring praise for iOS 27 is that it finally understands context and gets things done on the phone.

Privacy and security

Privacy is Siri's strongest argument.

  • On device first. Apple Intelligence runs on device where possible.
  • Private Cloud Compute. When a request needs a server, Apple says the data is not stored or made accessible to Apple, is used only to fulfill the request, and the design can be verified by outside experts.
  • Transparency logging. You can turn on a log in Settings that shows requests sent off device and export reports of Private Cloud Compute activity.
  • Training. If you opt into Device Analytics, Apple uses privacy preserving methods to study aggregated patterns without collecting individual content, per its Apple Intelligence privacy page.
  • Gemini deal. Apple says Gemini technology powers its models, but processing stays on device or in Apple's controlled infrastructure.

Apple's record is not spotless. In December 2024 Apple agreed to a $95 million settlement over Siri recordings made before it moved to opt in review in 2019.

Who it is for

  • iPhone 15 Pro and newer owners who want an assistant that knows their own data.
  • Privacy minded users who want AI help without ad driven data use.
  • Apple households with iPad, Mac and Apple TV, since Siri AI follows you across them.
  • English speakers outside the EU, at least at launch.

Who should skip it

  • Older iPhone owners. No Apple Intelligence means no Siri AI.
  • EU residents. Not available at first.
  • Smart home power users on Alexa or Google. Siri controls HomeKit and Matter devices but has fewer partner errands than Alexa+.
  • People who need a heavy duty chatbot today. Daily limits and a coming fee make ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini a safer bet for long sessions.

Verdict

If you own a recent iPhone, turn Siri AI on: it is free, it is private by design, and it finally does what Apple promised in 2024. Treat it as a beta, because Apple still labels it one, and expect daily limits now and a fee for heavier use later. For the home, Alexa+ and Gemini for Home remain stronger on speakers and smart home errands.

Frequently asked questions

Is the new Siri free?

Yes, as of October 2026. Siri AI is included on supported devices. Apple's terms say features that rely on server side models have daily usage limits and that expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. No fee has been published.

Which iPhones get Siri AI?

Apple lists iPhone 15 Pro and later, including the iPhone 16 and 17 lines, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. iOS 27 itself runs on iPhone 11 and later, but older models do not get Siri AI because it needs Apple Intelligence.

Does Siri use Google Gemini?

Apple and Google announced on January 12, 2026 that Apple's next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. Apple says requests run on device or in its Private Cloud Compute, and data is used only to fulfill your request.

Is Siri AI available in the EU?

Not at first. Apple's Siri page says Siri AI will not be initially available in the EU. Other Apple Intelligence features are available in more languages.

What languages does Siri AI support?

Siri AI begins in English. Apple Intelligence overall supports Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Vietnamese.

Is Siri better than Alexa now?

On your phone, yes for most iPhone owners, because Siri AI reads personal context across your apps and keeps that data private. In the home, Alexa+ still does more errands through partners like OpenTable, Uber and Grubhub. See our Alexa+ vs Siri comparison.

What was the Siri settlement?

In May 2026 Apple agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class action claiming it overstated Apple Intelligence and Siri features before the iPhone 16 launch. Eligible US buyers of iPhone 15 or 16 models between June 10, 2024 and March 29, 2025 can receive up to $95 per device, per TechCrunch.

Can I type to Siri?

Yes. Apple says you can type or talk to Siri AI, and the new Siri app keeps conversations synced across iPhone, iPad and Mac so you can continue a chat on another device.
