What it is

Upfirst is an AI receptionist that answers your business calls, books appointments, transfers calls to your team with context, and sends recordings and voicemail transcriptions. It trains itself from your website when you sign up, and you can tune it in plain English, including through a ChatGPT plugin or a Claude connector. It says it serves over 1,000 businesses across law, real estate, property management, contractors, HVAC, insurance, restaurants, veterinary, salons, towing and franchises.

Pricing explained

Upfirst bills per call, with four public plans. All prices as listed on its pricing page in October 2026.

Plan Monthly billing Annual billing Calls included Extra calls
Starter $24.95 $20 30 $1.50
Premium $59.95 $48 90 $1.00
Pro $159.95 $128 300 $0.75
Scale $299 $240 600 $0.70
Custom Quote Quote 600+ Volume discount

What counts matters as much as the rate. Upfirst does not bill spam it detects, calls under 15 seconds or calls with no speech. Hang ups and robocalls are a real share of small business call volume, so this rule can make Upfirst cheaper than its sticker price suggests.

What that means at common volumes, monthly billing:

  • 50 calls: Premium at $59.95, or Starter plus 20 calls ($54.95).
  • 200 calls: Pro at $159.95, against $385 on Smith.ai.
  • 500 calls: Scale at $299, against $800 on Smith.ai.
  • 1,000 calls: Scale plus 400 calls at $0.70 is $579; a custom quote may be lower.

Pro and Scale add white glove onboarding and custom integrations. Custom adds volume discounts, priority support and HIPAA BAAs. See how this stacks up against per minute tools in how much an AI receptionist costs.

Features

Every plan includes the same core feature set:

  • Appointment booking into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square or Clio
  • 35+ languages, switching automatically when the caller does
  • Warm transfers, where your team gets the caller's details before accepting
  • Call recording, voicemail assistant and voicemail transcription
  • Zapier for thousands of other apps
  • Custom actions that call any app with an API

Where it falls short. There is no staffed human backup: transfers go to your own phones, so if nobody answers, the caller is back to a message. Native CRM coverage beyond Clio is thin, so HubSpot or Salesforce users will rely on Zapier. And HIPAA BAAs sit only on custom plans, which rules out the public plans for most medical practices.

Setup

Sign up, enter your website, and Upfirst trains the agent on your business automatically. A free 30 minute onboarding call is offered, and Pro and Scale include white glove onboarding. Because you can adjust instructions in plain English, changes like new hours or a holiday closure do not need a support ticket. The 14 day trial is long enough to run two full weeks of real calls before paying.

Ratings

Upfirst's Trustpilot profile, claimed in May 2025, had no reviews when we checked in October 2026, and we found no other listing with 10 or more reviews to cite. That is the main reason it ranks second rather than first in best AI receptionists. Use the trial to build your own evidence.

How it compares

Upfirst's closest rivals are the other per call AI receptionists. Here is how they line up as listed in October 2026, monthly billing.

Upfirst Smith.ai Quo Sona Goodcall
Entry plan $24.95 for 30 calls Free for 25 calls $19 seat with 10 calls $79 for 100 unique callers
Cost at 200 calls $159.95 $385 $118 $129 (unique callers)
Cost at 500 calls $299 $800 $218 $129 (unique callers)
Extra call rate $0.70 to $1.50 $2.10 to $3.00 $0.45 to $1.00 $0.15 to $0.79 per caller
Direct calendar booking Yes, every plan Yes Text links only Yes
Languages 35+ English, Spanish English, Spanish, French Not published
Human backup No Yes, per call add on No No
Works with your current phone Yes, by forwarding Yes Only Quo numbers Yes

Upfirst is not the cheapest cell in every row. Quo Sona costs less at 200 and 500 calls, but only if you move your phone service to Quo, and it sends booking links instead of booking directly. Goodcall costs less when many calls come from repeat callers, because it bills each caller once a month. Against Smith.ai, Upfirst costs about 42% as much at 200 calls and about 37% as much at 500, and gives up the human backup and the native CRM list in return.

For a business that keeps its current phone number, wants direct booking, and pays per call, Upfirst is the cheapest published option in our comparison.

Before you sign up

  • Count real calls, not rings. Since spam, sub 15 second and silent calls are free, your billable count may be lower than your phone log shows.
  • Pick the plan by overage math. Above about 53 calls, Premium beats Starter plus overage; above about 190, Pro beats Premium plus overage.
  • Connect your calendar on day one. Booking is the feature that pays for the tool, so test it in the first week of the trial.
  • Set transfer rules. Decide which calls should ring a person and confirm someone answers them.
  • Ask about HIPAA early if you handle patient information; BAAs are on custom plans only.
  • Consider annual billing only after the trial. It saves 20% but commits you for the year.

Who it is for

  • Solo owners and small teams who want the lowest cost per call
  • Businesses with long calls, where per minute billing would cost more
  • Law firms on Clio that do not need a human fallback
  • Multilingual callers, thanks to 35+ languages
  • Anyone getting a lot of spam or hang up calls, since those are not billed

Who should skip it

  • Businesses that want a live receptionist behind the AI; look at Smith.ai or Abby Connect.
  • Medical practices under 600 calls a month that need a BAA.
  • Teams that want native HubSpot or Salesforce logging without Zapier.
  • Businesses with very short calls, where Rosie at $49 for 250 minutes may cost less.

Verdict

Upfirst is the price leader among per call AI receptionists and covers the features small businesses actually use: booking on every plan, warm transfers, recordings and 35+ languages. Its only real weakness is a short public record. Run the 14 day trial on live calls, check the transcripts, and if it handles your calls well, it will likely cost you half what the better known names charge.
