What it is
CapCut is a video editor from ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, available on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and the web. Its App Store listing shows release in April 2020, version 19.7.0 in October 2026, and a 4.6 rating from more than 1.1 million ratings. In the US, the terms of service are with TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, and premium services are provided by TT Commerce and Global Services.
It started as a phone editor for TikTok clips and now bundles a full multi track editor, a library of templates and effects, AI voice and caption tools, and AI video generation through ByteDance's Seedance models. Some AI features run on third party models (the terms name Runway, Google and FLUX), which carry their providers' own terms.
Pricing explained
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | AI credits per month | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | Not listed | Not listed |
| Pro | $19.99 | $179.99 | 1,200 | 1 TB |
| Ultra | $79 | $900 | 8,645 | 1 TB |
| Teams | $12.49 per seat (2 seats) | $107.50 per seat (2 seats) | 1,200 per seat | 1 TB |
Prices are from CapCut's pricing page in October 2026, which notes prices are for reference and that final pricing, taxes and offers appear at sign in. The Teams seat tiers on the page are inconsistent (some larger seat counts show higher per seat prices), so check them in your account.
App Store prices differ. The iOS listing shows in app purchases including a Standard Monthly Subscription at $9.99, Pro Monthly at $19.99, a $7.99 monthly option and a yearly subscription at $89.99, without saying what each unlocks. Prices vary by platform and channel, so compare before you buy and buy where you can cancel easily.
What credits buy. On Pro, 1,200 credits cover up to 240 seconds of 720p Seedance 2.0 Mini video, or 600 seconds at 480p. Ultra covers 1,700 or 4,300 seconds. CapCut says Seedance 2.0 Mini uses up to 58% fewer credits than its other model. Past your credits, Pro pays per second: from $0.007 for 2.0 Mini at 480p and from $0.12 for Seedance 2.5. Pro and up can buy extra credits.
Worked examples
- Creator editing their own footage: Free covers it. Pay only for premium templates or AI tools.
- Social team making 3 minutes of AI b roll a month: Pro at $19.99 covers 180 seconds of 720p 2.0 Mini.
- Heavy AI video user, 20 minutes a month at 720p: 1,200 seconds fits inside Ultra's 1,700 second allowance, so $79 covers it. On Pro you would pay $19.99 plus per second overage on the 960 seconds past the 240 included.
Against rivals: Descript starts at $16 a month billed annually, Runway Standard at $12 a month billed annually, and Canva Pro bundles AI in its design subscription. See best AI video generators and the AI Price Index.
Key features
Editing toolkit
Trim, split and merge, speed from 0.1x to 100x with speed curves, freeze frames, transitions, keyframe animation on every setting, optical flow slow motion, chroma key, a multi track timeline and stabilization, per its App Store listing. That is more than most free editors offer.
Auto captions and text to speech
Speech recognition captions you can edit on the timeline in one step, plus text to speech in many languages and voices. CapCut's text to speech page lists 200+ AI voices, a voice changer and custom voice clones from a few recorded sentences.
Background removal and motion tracking
Automatic background removal without a green screen, and motion tracking for text and stickers.
Seedance AI video
Text and image to video generation inside the editor on paid plans, with Seedance 2.5 and the cheaper 2.0 Mini. Clips drop straight onto the timeline, which saves the export and import loop you get with standalone generators.
Templates, effects and filters
Hundreds of effects, weekly filter updates, text templates, local font import and a template library. Premium templates need Pro.
Export and sharing
Custom export resolution, 4K 60fps with smart HDR, and format presets for social platforms. TikTok integration posts directly.
What users say
CapCut has two very different reputations. On the App Store it rates 4.6 from 1,124,280 ratings, from people who like how fast it makes social clips. On Trustpilot it rates 1.2 from 1,352 reviews, 88% one star; the profile is unclaimed and CapCut does not invite reviews, so it skews to complaints. Recurring issues: charges after free trials, repeat charges and hard cancellation, subscriptions that do not show in the app store account, credits deducted for renders that failed, slow automated support, lag and crashes on exports, and heavy paywall prompts. Praise centers on ease of use for everyday social video.
Privacy and security
This is the section to read before you upload client work.
- Content license. The terms say CapCut does not own your content, but you grant it a perpetual, worldwide, non exclusive, royalty free, transferable and sublicensable license to use, modify, reproduce and distribute it to operate and develop the services, subject to your settings.
- Name and likeness. You also grant a transferable, sublicensable license to your username, image and likeness, including in sponsored content.
- AI training. The terms do not explicitly say whether your content trains AI models; the closest language is the license for developing the services.
- Tracking. The App Store privacy label lists identifiers used to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and photos, videos, audio and contact info linked to you.
- Commercial use. The materials license makes commercial use depend on each asset's tag; standard Sounds are non commercial, and mixing in a non commercial asset makes the export personal use only.
- Retention. Deleted accounts and data cannot be recovered.
For brand or client work under NDA, edit locally and avoid cloud features, or use an editor with business terms.
Who it is for
- TikTok, Reels and Shorts creators who want a free, fast editor on the phone.
- Small social teams that want templates, auto captions and AI b roll in one app.
- Beginners who want pro tools like keyframes and chroma key without paying.
Who should skip it
- Agencies and brands handling client footage under strict confidentiality, given the content license.
- Long form YouTube or podcast editors: Descript edits by transcript.
- Anyone who needs clean commercial licensing on music and templates.
- Users wary of ByteDance data practices.
Alternatives
- Descript review: transcript based editing for podcasts and long form.
- Runway review: stronger AI video generation and editing models.
- Canva AI review: templates and simple video inside a design suite.
- Adobe Firefly review: commercially safe AI video and images.
- HeyGen review: AI avatar videos for training and marketing.
- More in best AI video generators.
Verdict
For personal and creator content, CapCut's free editor is hard to beat, and Pro at $19.99 is fair if you want premium templates and a few minutes of Seedance video a month. Buy through a channel where you can cancel cleanly, track credits closely, and keep client work out of it unless you accept a perpetual, sublicensable license to everything you upload.
