How to choose

Wire free mowers differ mainly in how they find their position. Match the method to your yard.

  • Mostly open lawn, few trees: RTK plus vision is accurate and simple. Navimow X4, Worx Landroid Vision Cloud, Husqvarna 435 iQ AWD.
  • Heavy trees, shade, tall fences: LiDAR or a fusion. Mammotion Luba 3, Mova LiDAX Ultra, Ecovacs Goat A3000, Navimow i2 LiDAR.
  • Steep slopes: AWD or 4WD rated 70% or more. Navimow X4 and Worx 4WD at 84%, Luba 3 at 80%, Husqvarna 435 iQ AWD and Yarbo at 70%.
  • Over 2 acres: Yarbo, or Husqvarna's 440 iQ in our large yards guide.
  • Night mowing: LiDAR, which needs no light.

Then check two ownership details: the app rating (it is the interface you will use every week) and how long cellular features stay free.

What it costs

BestBots does not list prices for robot mowers sold on Amazon or retail. Check the current price through each pick's link. The cost differences that persist after purchase:

  • RTK service: included at no extra cost on Navimow X4 (lifetime free per its FAQ) and Worx (lifetime free RTK Cloud). Mammotion lists iNavi as lifetime free on certain models.
  • LiDAR only mowers (Mova, Ecovacs, Navimow i2 LiDAR) need no RTK service at all.
  • Cellular extras: Navimow Connect+ free 1 or 2 years then annual; Mammotion 4G free 3 years.
  • Warranty: up to 3 years on Navimow, Mova and Mammotion; 2 years on Yarbo.

RTK vs LiDAR vs vision

RTK (real time kinematic) corrects GPS to about an inch using a reference signal. It is the most accurate method in the open, and it is how the mower knows where the invisible boundary is. Its weakness is sky view: big trees, deep eaves and tall walls block satellites. Antenna free network RTK solves the setup hassle, not the sky view problem.

LiDAR fires lasers and measures the distance to everything around it, building a 3D map. It does not care about satellites or light, which is why it works under trees and at night. Its weakness is large open areas with no landmarks to measure against.

Vision uses cameras to recognize grass edges, paths and obstacles, and to estimate movement. It adds obstacle intelligence and helps near structures. Its weakness is low light.

Fused systems combine them. The Luba 3 runs all three; the Navimow X4 fuses RTK with vision; Ecovacs and Mova fuse LiDAR with vision.

The 2026 FCC rule

The FCC added foreign produced advanced robotic devices, including robotic mowers, to its Covered List on July 28, 2026. Per Consumer Reports, models already FCC authorized can still be sold and used, new models need conditional approval, and authorized devices can get updates until January 1, 2029. Buy current models from the brand or a major retailer.

Setup day

Wire free setup takes an afternoon instead of a weekend. The usual flow is the same across brands: place the charging station on level ground near an outlet with open sky (for RTK models), connect the app, let the mower auto map or drive it around the edge once, then draw no go zones around beds, pools and play areas. Check for these before you start:

  • Cellular and sky view at the dock. Network RTK needs both. Navimow publishes a coverage checker.
  • Passages between zones. Measure gates and side paths against the mower's width; the Navimow X4 body is 24 in wide.
  • Isolated lawns. Navimow and Husqvarna support separate areas; others may need a manual carry.

Red flags

  • Mapping claims without slope limits. Auto mapping works on any lawn; climbing it does not.
  • "No subscription" with fine print. Check which features need cellular service after the free period.
  • Single method mowers in mixed yards. An RTK only mower in a wooded yard will lose its fix.
  • Thin rating history. New 2026 launches (Mova LiDAX Ultra, Worx 4WD line) have few reviews; weigh the warranty and return window more heavily.
  • Third party sellers. Buy from the brand or an authorized retailer to keep warranty and activation intact.

How we picked

We compared only wire free robot mowers sold in the US in October 2026, using each brand's spec pages for navigation, area, slope and runtime; Amazon, Trustpilot and App Store listings for ratings with counts; and published service and warranty terms. We did not test these mowers. Ranking favors navigation that holds up in mixed yards, slope capability, availability and ownership signals. Scores follow /how-we-score.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best robot lawn mower without a perimeter wire?

The Mammotion Luba 3 AWD, because it combines LiDAR, network RTK and vision and is available to order. The Navimow X4 is the best RTK plus vision option when it is in stock, and the Mova LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD is the best LiDAR only choice.

How do wire free robot mowers know where the lawn ends?

They build a virtual map. RTK models use satellite positioning accurate to about an inch, LiDAR models scan the yard with lasers, and vision models use cameras to see grass edges. You confirm or draw the boundary in the app after auto mapping.

Do RTK robot mowers need an antenna?

Older RTK setups did. In 2026, Navimow's network RTK, Mammotion's NetRTK and Worx's RTK Cloud deliver corrections over cellular or the internet, so a rooftop antenna is optional rather than required. Navimow still ships an antenna kit for weak spots.

RTK or LiDAR: which is better?

RTK is excellent on open lawns and weak under heavy trees or beside tall walls. LiDAR works under canopy and at night and needs no satellites or subscription, but can struggle on wide open spaces with few landmarks. Mowers that fuse both, like the Luba 3, cover the weaknesses of each.

Are wire free robot mowers reliable?

The hardware is mature, and the risk has moved to software. Firmware updates can change mowing behavior, which is why we weigh app ratings: Navimow 4.7, Husqvarna 4.5, Mammotion 2.9 and Worx 2.9 on the App Store.

Can I convert a wired robot mower to wire free?

Only within some brands. Husqvarna sells EPOS versions of its mowers, such as the 435 iQ AWD alongside the wired 435X AWD. In most cases, switching to wire free means buying a new mower.

Do wire free mowers need a subscription?

Basic mowing does not. Some cellular features have free periods: Navimow's Connect+ is free for 1 or 2 years on the X4, Mammotion includes 3 years of 4G, and Worx lists lifetime free RTK Cloud.

What happens if a wire free mower loses its signal?

It depends on the method. RTK only mowers pause or return when their position fix drops, which is common under heavy trees. Mowers that fuse RTK with vision or LiDAR keep going on the other sensors. That is why fused designs, like the Luba 3, are our top pick for mixed yards.

Do wire free mowers work at night?

LiDAR models work in the dark, and Mammotion says the Luba 3 works day or night. Vision only models need light; Worx sells a light module for night mowing.
