Rights, consent and privacy
ElevenLabs grants a commercial license from Starter; Free is non commercial. Its terms say you retain rights in your output. You must have rights and consent for any voice you clone, and professional clones are limited to your own voice and verified. It offers a training opt out, Zero Retention mode, C2PA participation and a public AI speech classifier. Voice actors Karissa Vacker and Mark Boyett sued ElevenLabs in Delaware in 2024 (1:24-cv-00987) over voices allegedly built from their narrations.
Murf grants commercial rights on content made with its voices, bans reselling voices and using output to train AI, and licenses its voices from paid actors who earn royalties. That sidesteps most consent questions, since you are not cloning anyone on self serve plans. We found no lawsuits against Murf in the sources we reviewed.
