Canva AI is the best AI image tool for people whose real goal is a finished design: generate an image, drop it into one of 3.6 million Pro templates, resize and schedule it. On paid plans, Standard image generation does not draw from the monthly AI allowance. It is not a specialist generator, and Canva's allowance system is harder to read than a credit count.

By Canva

Canva AI is the best fit when the image is one part of a finished design: you generate, then drop it straight into a template, resize it and schedule it. It is not a specialist generator, and its allowance system (Standard, Premium and Ultra tools, with estimated uses) is harder to read than a credit count.

What it is

Canva AI is the set of AI features inside Canva: Canva AI 2.0 (a conversational assistant that generates on brand designs and visuals from a prompt), image generation, Magic Layers (turning flat designs into editable layers), Magic Edit, Magic Expand, Magic Eraser, background remover, Image Upscaler, Magic Write, Translate, video and voice tools, plus third party AI apps in Canva's Apps Marketplace.

For images, you can prompt Canva AI directly, or generate inside a design so the result lands on the canvas. Canva AI supports 17 languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Hindi and Arabic.

Pricing explained

Canva meters AI with a monthly allowance shared across three tiers of tools.

Plan Price Standard AI (incl. image generation) Premium AI Ultra AI

Pro $18 per month or $143.99 per year (App Store listing) No allowance used, fair use Up to 200 uses Up to 20 uses
Business $25 per month (App Store listing) No allowance used, fair use Up to 400 uses Up to 40 uses
Enterprise Contact sales Contact sales Contact sales Contact sales

Allowances from Canva's pricing page and help center in October 2026. Canva's web pricing page loads regional prices in the browser, so we list the US App Store in app prices; Canva says Business pricing depends on location and the number of people.

What the tiers mean. Canva calls its allowance figures estimates that "assume simple tasks and lower-tier tools; complex tasks and advanced tools use more." Standard tools (image generation with Canva AI, Image Upscaler, Magic Formulas) are unmetered on paid plans except Pro Lite. Premium tools (such as Magic Layers and design generation) and Ultra tools (the most advanced models) draw from the allowance.

Reset. Paid allowances reset monthly on your billing date, even on yearly plans. Free resets at midnight UTC on the first of the month.

AI Pass. $100 per person per month, monthly or annual for annual subscribers. 40x more AI on Pro, Teams and Nonprofits; 20x on Business. Not on Free, Education, Enterprise, trials, prepaid plans or app store subscriptions. Business can also buy AI top ups that last 30 days.

Free trial. Canva offers a free trial of Pro and Business; you are not billed for team members during a Business trial.

Key features

Image generation in the editor

Generated images land directly in a design, where you can crop, recolor, add text and resize for every platform. For a non designer this beats exporting from a separate generator.

Canva AI 2.0

A conversational assistant that researches, generates and refines designs through text or voice, and uses AI connectors to pull context from other tools.

Magic Layers

Turns a flat image or design into layered, movable elements, so you can edit a generated poster rather than regenerate it. Free users can try it.

Photo editing tools

Magic Edit, Magic Expand, Magic Eraser, background remover and Image Upscaler cover the common photo fixes.

Brand Kits and scheduling

Pro includes 5 Brand Kits and social content scheduling; Business includes 100 Brand Kits with approvals. Generated visuals can follow your brand fonts and colors.

Affinity

Pro and Business include Affinity with AI tools, for users who need a more traditional design app.

What users say

Canva's iOS app has 4.9 on the App Store from over 3.58 million ratings, and Trustpilot shows 4.0 from 7,841 reviews. Recurring praise: easy to use, templates help beginners make professional results, and AI features are helpful once found. Recurring complaints: premium content and features locked behind paid tiers, and support that is hard to reach.

Commercial rights and copyright

From Canva's AI Product Terms:

  • Ownership. "As between you and Canva, and to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, you retain your ownership rights to your Input, and you own your Output, except for any Output that modifies or incorporates Licensed Content."
  • Library content. If you use AI to edit a photo from the Canva library, "you won't own this Output." If you generate a presentation that includes library photos, you own the presentation but not the photos, which stay under Canva's Content License Agreement.
  • Use. You may use Output for any lawful purpose, at your own risk.
  • Not unique. Other users may receive similar outputs.
  • Usage limits. Canva calls AI usage limits operational controls, not fixed entitlements, and may change them.

At the organization level, Canva's plan comparison lists AI output indemnity under Canva Shield, with a minimum of 100 seats noted.

Privacy and security

Canva's plan comparison lists SOC 2 Type II assurance, SSO, SCIM provisioning and AI admin controls for managing team access to AI tools. Enterprise adds AI audit logs. Generations through third party apps in the Apps Marketplace may fall under those providers' terms and limits.

Who it is for

  • Small businesses and social media managers who need posts, ads and flyers fast.
  • Non designers who want AI inside templates.
  • Teams on Canva already, since image generation is unmetered on paid plans.
  • Educators, since Canva for Education is free for K-12.

Who should skip it

  • Artists and illustrators. Midjourney has far more creative control.
  • Anyone who needs precise text in AI images. Ideogram is built for it.
  • Developers. Canva has no image generation API; use Nano Banana or ChatGPT Images via API.
  • Heavy users of advanced models. Ultra tools cap at 20 uses on Pro.

Alternatives

Verdict

Canva AI is the right choice when the image is a means to a finished design: unmetered Standard image generation on paid plans, Magic Layers, templates and brand kits make it the fastest route from idea to a post or flyer, backed by a 4.9 App Store rating from 3.5 million people. It ranks below dedicated generators because its output and controls are not as strong, allowances are estimates, and Canva's web prices are hard to verify. If you live in Canva, use what is already there before buying another tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canva AI free?

Yes, with a small allowance. Canva Free includes up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month, resetting at midnight UTC on the first of each month. Standard AI tools on Free draw from that allowance.

How many AI images can I make on Canva Pro?

Canva lists image generation with Canva AI as a Standard AI tool, and on paid plans other than Pro Lite, Standard tools do not count toward your monthly allowance. They are subject to fair use limits Canva does not quantify. Premium AI tools such as Magic Layers have up to 200 uses a month on Pro and Ultra tools up to 20.

How much is Canva Pro?

Canva's web pricing page sets prices by region and loads them in the browser. Canva's US App Store listing shows Canva Pro at $18 a month or $143.99 a year, and Canva Business at $25 a month. Business pricing on the web depends on location and team size.

What is Canva AI Pass?

AI Pass is a monthly add on for web managed Pro, Teams, Business and Nonprofits plans. It costs $100 per person per month and gives 40x more AI on Pro, Teams and Nonprofits, or 20x on Business. It is not available on Free, Education, Enterprise, free trials, prepaid plans or App Store and Google Play subscriptions.

Can I use Canva AI images commercially?

Yes. Canva's AI Product Terms say you own your Output and may use it for any lawful purpose, at your own risk. If the output modifies or includes Canva library content, such as a library photo you edited with AI, that content stays under Canva's content license instead of being owned by you.

Does Canva offer AI indemnity?

Canva's plan comparison lists access to AI output indemnity under Canva Shield, described as indemnification for AI output from Canva's AI features, with a minimum of 100 seats noted. It is aimed at large organizations, not individual Pro users.

Canva AI vs Adobe Firefly: which should I use?

Canva is easier for non designers and puts images straight into templates. Firefly has Adobe's commercially safe models, partner models and Photoshop tools. If you design every day in Canva, use Canva AI; if you produce client assets in Adobe apps, use Firefly.
