What is billed and what is not
Intercom bills a resolution when, after Fin's last answer, the customer either confirms it helped or leaves without asking for more help. The second case is an assumed resolution.
You are not billed when:
- the customer asks for a human
- Fin only responds to a greeting
- Fin asks a clarifying question and the customer never replies
- Fin escalates because of your workspace rules
- a procedure fails to complete
One rule works in your favor: Intercom charges one outcome per conversation, even if Fin takes several actions in it. One works against you: a customer who leaves frustrated after an answer counts as an assumed resolution unless Fin detects the frustration and escalates.
Worked examples
All examples use monthly billing unless noted and assume every AI handled conversation ends in a billable resolution. Your real bill is lower if some conversations go to a human.
1. Two person startup, 100 resolutions a month. 2 Essential seats at $39 is $78, plus 100 outcomes at $0.99 is $99. Total $177 a month. Billed annually the seats drop to $58, for $157.
2. Ten agent SaaS team, 1,000 resolutions a month. 10 Advanced seats at $99 is $990, plus $990 in outcomes. Total $1,980 a month. Annual seats ($85) bring it to $1,840.
3. Salesforce team using Fin standalone, 40 resolutions in a slow month. No seats. The 50 outcome minimum applies, so you pay $49.50, not $39.60.
4. Ecommerce brand on Gorgias using Fin standalone, 3,000 resolutions a month. 3,000 at $0.99 is $2,970 a month, plus your Gorgias plan. Gorgias's own AI Agent lists $0.85 to $1.00 per automated interaction, which also uses a helpdesk ticket, so compare the two on your real volume.
5. Support org at 10,000 resolutions plus 1,000 voice outcomes. Chat and email: $9,900. Voice: 1,000 at $1.99 is $1,990. Outcomes total $11,890 a month before seats.
How Fin compares per resolution
| Product | Published AI unit price |
|---|---|
| HubSpot Customer Agent | $0.50 per resolution (needs Service Hub Professional) |
| Intercom Fin | $0.99 per outcome |
| ChatBot.com | $0.99 per resolution after the included bundle |
| Gorgias AI Agent | $0.85 to $1.00 per automated interaction, plus a ticket |
| Zendesk AI agents | $1.50 committed, $2.00 pay as you go |
Fin sits in the middle on unit price, but it is the only top tier option sold standalone with no seat fees. For the full Zendesk math, see Intercom Fin vs Zendesk AI.
How to keep the bill down
- Write handoff rules. Route refunds, complaints and account changes to humans by rule. Those conversations are not billed and they are where AI answers go wrong.
- Watch assumed resolutions. Review a sample each week. If customers are leaving unhappy, tighten the escalation rules so Fin hands off instead of billing.
- Use Lite seats. Advanced and Expert include 20 or 50 free Lite seats for teammates who do not send messages.
- Pay annually once the rate is proven. Annual seats save $7 to $14 per seat per month.
- Start standalone. If you already have a helpdesk, the 50 outcome minimum makes a first month cost as little as $49.50.
Is Fin worth $0.99?
At the BLS median wage of $21.53 an hour for customer service representatives (May 2025), a human handling four chats an hour costs about $5.38 per chat in wages. Fin at $0.99 per resolved conversation is far cheaper for repetitive questions, and you do not pay for the ones it hands off. The risk is volume: a team at 10,000 resolutions a month pays $9,900 for Fin alone, so negotiate before you scale. Read the full Intercom Fin review.
