What it is
Perplexity is an AI answer engine. Instead of a blank chat, it starts from a question, searches the web and returns a written answer with numbered citations next to each claim. Follow up questions keep the thread going. It runs on the web, on iOS and Android and inside Comet, Perplexity's own browser.
Paid plans add more. Deep Research produces longer multi source reports. Computer, Perplexity's agent mode, runs longer tasks on credits. Perplexity also orchestrates models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and NVIDIA, and paid users can choose which one answers.
Pricing explained
| Plan | Price | Credits | Key inclusions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | None | Cited search, basic models, limited daily use |
| Pro | $17 per month billed annually | 4,000 bonus Computer credits | Deep Research, model choice, premium sources, document and app creation |
| Max | $167 per month billed annually | 10,000 monthly plus 35,000 bonus | Maximum Computer use, frontier models, video generation, Model Council, priority access |
| Enterprise Pro | $34 per seat per month billed annually | 500 per seat | SSO, no training on data, SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA |
| Enterprise Max | $271 per seat per month billed annually | 15,000 per seat | SCIM, audit logs, retention settings |
Pro at $17 is the cheapest of the major paid assistants on annual billing, below ChatGPT Plus at $20 and level with Claude Pro's $17 annual rate. The catch: Perplexity's pricing page shows only annual prices, so a monthly subscriber may pay more. We could not verify the monthly rate from the pricing page.
Credits are the second thing to understand. Searches and Deep Research are covered by plan limits. Computer tasks spend credits, and Pro's 4,000 are a one time bonus rather than a monthly allowance. Max is the only individual plan with monthly credits.
Max at $167 is a ten times jump. It suits analysts who run agent tasks all day. Everyone else should stay on Pro. Full math is in Perplexity pricing.
Key features
Inline citations
Every answer shows numbered sources inline, and Perplexity's help center says Pro returns many more citations per answer than Free. This is the feature that defines Perplexity. You can trace each sentence to a page, which is faster than checking a chat assistant's claims after the fact.
Model choice
Pro and Max users pick a preferred model per query. Perplexity names models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and NVIDIA in its lineup, and the BestBots record lists recent OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI models. For people who want to compare labs without four subscriptions, this is unique among the major assistants.
Premium data sources
Pro and Max include premium data from PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ for finance and market research. For analysts, that alone can justify the price, since those sources are expensive on their own.
Deep Research and search modes
Search modes include Best, Pro Search, Research and Reasoning. Research builds long reports from many sources. Pro users get high volume daily Pro Search.
Computer and Create
Computer is the agent mode that runs multi step tasks on credits. Create builds documents and small apps. Max adds video generation and Model Council, which compares answers across models.
Connectors and Comet
Pro lists 400+ app connectors, and Enterprise adds Slack. Comet is Perplexity's browser with the assistant built in.
What users say
| Source | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | 4.8 | 516,000+ |
| G2 | 4.4 | 361 |
| Trustpilot | 1.4 | 840 |
App Store users rate Perplexity level with ChatGPT at 4.8. G2 puts it at 4.4. On Trustpilot, 83% of reviews are one star. The recurring complaints are billing (renewals charged above promotional rates), credits that deplete quickly in Computer mode, mostly automated support, and accounts or promotions lost without clear consent. The positive reviews praise research quality.
The credit complaints are worth taking seriously. If you plan to use Computer heavily, track credit use in your first month before upgrading to Max.
Privacy and security
Perplexity's help center says search queries and feedback are used to improve its AI models, and that you can stop this by turning off the AI Data Usage toggle in your profile settings. Its privacy notice says Perplexity does not sell personal data or send queries, prompts or conversation content to advertisers, and does not train on email content when the Email Assistant is enabled. The notice does not list fixed retention periods for queries.
Enterprise Pro lists no training on your data, SSO, SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR and PCI DSS. Enterprise Max adds SCIM, audit logs and retention settings. For company research, the Enterprise plans are the safer route.
Who it is for
- Researchers, students and journalists: cited answers and long reports.
- Analysts: PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ on Pro.
- People who want several labs' models: one subscription, model choice per query.
- Budget conscious annual buyers: $17 per month is the lowest annual price among the leaders.
Who should skip it
- Writers and creatives: chat first assistants handle long drafts better. See Claude review.
- Developers: no bundled coding agent. See ChatGPT review.
- Monthly payers: the pricing page shows annual rates only.
- Office or Google heavy workers: see Microsoft Copilot review and Gemini review.
Alternatives
- ChatGPT: web search with sources plus the widest tool set.
- Gemini: free Deep Research and 5 TB storage on AI Pro.
- Claude: long documents, Research mode and Claude Code.
- Grok: live search across X and the web.
- DeepSeek: free chat with web search.
Verdict
Perplexity is the strongest pick on published facts when the job is finding and checking information. Inline citations on every answer, premium data sources and model choice at $17 per month on annual billing make it the research specialist of the category.
It falls short outside research and around billing. There is no bundled coding agent, the pricing page hides monthly rates, credits for agent work are limited on Pro, and Trustpilot complaints focus on charges and support. Use Free to see if cited answers change how you work, then buy Pro annually if they do.
