What credits buy
| Model | Credits per second | Cost per second on API |
|---|---|---|
| Gen-4.5 | 12 | $0.12 |
| Aleph 2.0 (edit existing video) | 28 | $0.28 |
Gen-4.5 clips run 2 to 10 seconds, and Aleph 2.0 edits clips up to 30 seconds. Third party models in Runway, such as Kling, Seedance, Veo and Wan, draw from the same credits at their own rates.
Effective cost per second of Gen-4.5
| Plan | Monthly billing | Yearly billing |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $15 / 52 = about $0.29 | $12 / 52 = about $0.23 |
| Pro | $35 / 187 = about $0.19 | $28 / 187 = about $0.15 |
| Max | $95 / 791 = about $0.12 | $76 / 791 = about $0.10 |
| API | $0.12 | $0.12 |
Pro is the break even plan for most creators. Max matches the API rate on monthly billing and beats it on yearly billing.
Worked examples
A YouTuber making one 30 second AI sequence a week. Each sequence takes about 3 attempts per shot, so roughly 90 seconds of generation x 4 weeks = 360 seconds x 12 credits = 4,320 credits. Pro (2,250) is not enough; Max (9,500) covers it with rollover.
An agency editing client footage with Aleph. Ten 20 second edits a month = 200 seconds x 28 = 5,600 credits. Max covers it; Pro does not.
A team of 4 sharing a pool. Team at 4 x $69 = $276 a month for 27,600 pooled credits, about 2,300 seconds of Gen-4.5, plus API access.
An app generating 500 ten second clips a month. 5,000 seconds x $0.12 = $600 on the API.
Hidden costs and limits
- Failed or unusable takes still cost credits. Budget 2 to 3 attempts per keeper shot.
- Standard runs out fast. 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 is a handful of clips.
- Top up price is not published. Pro and up can buy extra credits in the dashboard with a 1,000 credit minimum.
- No rollover below Max.
- Training on your content. Runway's terms allow it outside Enterprise.
How it compares
Runway's $15 entry sits above Veo ($4.99 Plus, plus 50 free daily credits) and Kling and Pika ($10), and below Luma ($30). Per second, Runway's API at $0.12 is close to Veo 3.1 Fast ($0.10 to $0.12, with audio) and about half of Luma's 1080p rate ($0.24). Where Runway is unique is Aleph 2.0 editing of existing footage and pooled Team credits. See the AI Price Index.
Which plan to pick
- Testing: Free's 125 credits, then one month of Standard.
- Regular creator: Pro on yearly billing.
- Heavy creator or Aleph user: Max.
- Small agency: Team, for pooled credits and API access.
- Product builder: the API at $0.01 per credit.
