Runway is the strongest all round AI video platform for professional work in October 2026. Gen-4.5 handles generation, Aleph 2.0 edits real footage up to 30 seconds, and one credit balance also runs Kling, Seedance and Veo. The catch is cost: Gen-4.5 burns 12 credits per second, so the $15 Standard plan buys about 52 seconds a month.

By Runway AI, Inc.

The most complete AI video toolset for professional work: Gen-4.5 for generation, Aleph 2.0 for editing existing footage, 4K upscaling, C2PA provenance and an API at $0.01 per credit. Credits drain fast on the $15 Standard plan, support reviews are poor, and Runway is a defendant in several pending training data lawsuits.

What it is

Runway is a browser and mobile studio for generating and editing video, images and audio with AI. It started as a creative tool for filmmakers and now sells to agencies, studios and developers as well.

Two things set it apart. First, it trains its own frontier models: Gen-4.5 for text and image to video, and Aleph 2.0 for editing existing video in context. Gen-4.5 launched on December 1, 2025 and, according to Runway, ranked first on the Artificial Analysis text to video benchmark at 1,247 Elo, ahead of Veo 3 (1,226) and Sora 2 Pro (1,206). Second, Runway now acts as a model hub. Its pricing page and API list third party models such as Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.0, Veo 3.1, Wan 3.0 and Nano Banana Pro, all paid from the same credits.

Around the models sit the tools a production team needs: a timeline style editor, an agentic creative collaborator, brand kits, custom voice clones, music and sound effects, 4K upscaling and, on Max, HDR, ProRes and image sequence export.

Pricing explained

Runway sells monthly plans with credits. Every generation costs a set number of credits based on model, duration and resolution. Here is the pricing page as of October 2026.

Plan Monthly Billed yearly Credits Gen-4.5 seconds Key limits
Free $0 $0 125 one time about 10 Selection of models, 5GB
Standard $15 $12 625 per month about 52 5 parallel jobs, 3 projects, 20GB
Pro $35 $28 2,250 per month about 187 15 parallel, 5 projects, 1 voice clone, 100GB
Max $95 $76 9,500 per month about 791 20 parallel, rollover 1 month, HDR and ProRes, 500GB
Team $69 per seat $55 per seat 6,900 per seat, pooled about 575 per seat 2 to 9 seats, API access, 1TB
Enterprise Custom Custom Custom Custom SSO, SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, indemnification

Model costs inside the app. Gen-4.5 is 60 credits per 5 seconds (12 per second). Aleph 2.0 is 140 per 5 seconds (28 per second). Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p is 160 per 4 seconds and Seedance 2.0 Fast is 116 per 4 seconds. Gen-4 Image at 1080p is 8 credits and Gen-4 Image Turbo is 2.

The math. On Standard each credit costs $15 / 625 = $0.024, so one second of Gen-4.5 costs about $0.29 and a 10 second clip about $2.88. On Pro a credit costs about $0.0156, which puts a 10 second Gen-4.5 clip at $1.87. Max and Team both work out to $0.01 per credit, or $1.20 per 10 second clip. Max is the first plan where in app pricing matches the API rate.

That matters because AI video rarely lands on the first try. If you keep one in three generations, Standard yields roughly 17 seconds of usable Gen-4.5 footage a month. One 30 second Aleph edit costs 840 credits, more than Standard's entire allowance.

Extra credits and rollover. You can buy more credits from the billing page with a 1,000 credit minimum, and purchased credits never expire. Runway does not publish the top up price on the pricing page. Plan credits reset every cycle on Standard and Pro; only Max and Team roll over one month of unused credits.

API pricing. The developer platform charges $0.01 per credit with no plan required. Gen-4.5 is 12 credits per second ($0.12), Gen-4 Turbo is 5 ($0.05), Aleph 2 is 28 with a 56 credit minimum ($0.28), Veo 3.1 with audio is 40 ($0.40) and Veo 3.1 Fast is 15 ($0.15). ProRes and HDR outputs add 5 to 40 credits per second. Compare per second rates across vendors on the AI Price Index and in our Runway pricing breakdown.

Key features

Gen-4.5 video generation

Gen-4.5 generates clips of 2 to 10 seconds. The API reference lists six aspect ratios at 720p class sizes (1280 by 720, 720 by 1280, 960 by 960, 1104 by 832, 832 by 1104 and 1584 by 672). Runway says the model is strong on motion, prompt adherence and physical accuracy, and it names its own weak spots: causal reasoning, object permanence and actions that succeed when they should fail. Image to video, keyframes and video to video were announced as coming to Gen-4.5 at launch.

Aleph 2.0 video editing

Aleph 2.0 is the reason many professionals pay for Runway. You describe a change, such as making the sneakers red, adding graffiti to a wall or switching the season to winter, and the model edits that element while keeping the rest of the shot. Version 2.0 handles clips up to 30 seconds at 1080p, works across multiple shots, and previews the edit as an image before you spend credits on video.

Third party models

Standard and above include Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.0, Nano Banana Pro and more. The API adds Veo 3.1, Wan 3, Grok Imagine and others. One balance for many models makes it easy to try a shot on several engines without new accounts.

Upscaling and pro formats

Every paid plan includes 4K upscaling; Pro and Max make it unlimited and add Topaz upscaling. Max adds HDR, ProRes and image sequence export, which matters if your footage goes into a color grade.

Agent, MCP and team tools

Runway ships an agentic creative collaborator, a Runway MCP server (Pro and up) and a ChatGPT plugin. Team adds frame accurate comments, shared agent skills and connectors for Figma, Dropbox and Notion.

Commercial rights and licensing

Ownership and commercial use. Runway's Terms of Use (last updated September 15, 2026) say the company "does not claim ownership" of your inputs or outputs and does not restrict commercial use of outputs. There is no plan gate for commercial use. Enterprise customers also get legal indemnification, per the Team plan page; self serve plans do not.

Training license. The same terms give Runway a perpetual, irrevocable, sublicensable license to use inputs and outputs, and say they may be used to train and improve its models. Enterprise contracts state "no training on your data."

Likeness and consent. The terms bar submitting a photo of another person for print services without permission, and the usage policy prohibits harmful content. The API exposes a public figure threshold in its content moderation settings, which shows Runway filters recognizable people by default. If you generate a real person, get written consent and a release.

Provenance. Runway says it implements C2PA so AI generated content can be traced to its source, and it runs a public C2PA verifier for images, video and audio. Outputs carry no visible watermark on paid plans.

Lawsuits. Runway faces several pending cases. These are allegations, not findings:

  • Andersen v. Stability AI Ltd. (N.D. Cal., 3:23-cv-00201, filed January 13, 2023, Judge William H. Orrick). Artists including Sarah Andersen and Karla Ortiz sued Stability AI, Midjourney, DeviantArt and Runway AI for copyright infringement over training data. A September 28, 2026 order moved dispositive motions and the class certification hearing to be heard by September 29, 2027. The court was still entering orders in October 2026.
  • YouTube scraping class actions. Ace Cam, Inc. (Random Golf Club) filed a nationwide class action in the Southern District of New York on February 18, 2026 (1:26-cv-01362), alleging Runway circumvented YouTube's access controls to scrape creators' videos for training, in violation of the DMCA's anti circumvention rule, 17 U.S.C. 1201. Businessing LLC filed a related case on February 27, 2026, and David Vance Gardner's case, which adds California unfair competition and unjust enrichment claims, was transferred from California to New York on May 26, 2026. Judge Lewis A. Kaplan handles the group, and Runway's motion to dismiss was pending as of August 2026 filings.
  • EVOX Productions LLC v. Stability AI, Inc. (C.D. Cal., 2:26-cv-07201, filed July 2, 2026) is a copyright case whose docket lists Runway AI among the parties.

None of these cases restricts how you use Runway today. Agencies with risk averse clients should still ask for Enterprise indemnification.

What users say

Runway's iPhone app holds 4.5 stars from 17,928 ratings on the App Store. Trustpilot tells a different story: 1.2 out of 5 from 366 reviews, with 93% one star. The recurring complaints are credits draining on failed or off prompt generations, characters changing between shots, slow renders or black screen outputs, AI chat support instead of people, and trouble getting refunds. The few positive Trustpilot reviews praise the workflow and call the price fair against rivals.

The gap makes sense. App users rate quick creative sessions, while Trustpilot draws paying users who hit billing problems. Budget for reruns and start on a monthly plan before paying yearly.

Privacy and security

Runway publishes a data security page describing zero trust design, isolation of production data from testing, external penetration tests and a private bug bounty. Enterprise customers can pull third party audit reports from its trust portal. The Enterprise page lists SOC 2 Type 2, and the Team plan page lists SOC 2 and ISO/IEC 27001 for Enterprise. SSO, roles and permissions are Enterprise features.

The privacy tradeoff is training. Outside Enterprise, the terms allow Runway to train on your uploads and generations. Disputes go to binding arbitration under New York law, with a class action waiver.

Who it is for

  • Agencies and in house teams that edit real footage: product swaps, background changes, seasonal versions of an ad.
  • Filmmakers and editors who need 4K upscaling, HDR and ProRes in the same tool.
  • Developers who want one API for Runway, Kling, Veo and Seedance at a flat $0.01 per credit.
  • Teams of 2 to 9 who want pooled credits and frame accurate review.

Who should skip it

  • Hobbyists on a tight budget. 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 for $15 is thin. Pika's $10 plan or Luma's per credit rates go further.
  • Anyone who needs long single shots. Gen-4.5 tops out at 10 seconds per generation.
  • Teams that cannot allow training on their uploads but will not pay for Enterprise.
  • Buyers who need responsive human support on a small plan, based on Trustpilot reviews.

Verdict

Runway is the professional's pick. Aleph 2.0 makes it the best tool for changing footage you already shot, Gen-4.5 sits near the top of public benchmarks, and the API is simple at $0.01 per credit. Pay for Pro or Max, not Standard, if you plan to produce real work, and assume you will rerun a share of every shot. Weigh the training license and pending lawsuits if your clients care, and move to Enterprise for indemnification and no training on your data.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Aleph 2.0 edits up to 30 seconds of existing 1080p footage and changes only what you ask, which few rivals offer
  • Gen-4.5 ranked first on the Artificial Analysis text to video leaderboard at launch (1,247 Elo, December 2025)
  • One credit wallet covers Runway models plus Kling, Seedance, Veo and Wan, in the app and the API
  • C2PA content credentials on outputs and a public C2PA verifier
  • Team plan pools credits; Enterprise adds SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, SSO and indemnification

Cons

  • 625 Standard credits buy about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5, so the entry plan runs out fast
  • Terms let Runway train on your inputs and outputs unless you are on Enterprise
  • Trustpilot score is 1.2 from 366 reviews, driven by credit burn, failed renders and refund complaints
  • Named defendant in Andersen v. Stability AI and in YouTube scraping class actions that are still pending

Frequently asked questions

Is Runway AI free?

Runway has a free plan with 125 one time credits, a selection of models and 5GB of storage. At Gen-4.5's 12 credits per second, that is about 10 seconds of video. The credits do not refresh, so the free plan is a trial in practice.

How much does Runway cost per month?

Standard is $15 per month for 625 credits, Pro is $35 for 2,250, and Max is $95 for 9,500, according to Runway's pricing page in October 2026. Yearly billing drops those to $12, $28 and $76 a month. Team is $69 per seat per month with 6,900 pooled credits per seat.

How many seconds of video do Runway credits buy?

Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second, so Standard covers about 52 seconds, Pro about 187 seconds and Max about 791 seconds per month. Aleph 2.0 editing uses 28 credits per second, and Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p uses 40.

Can I use Runway videos commercially?

Yes. Runway's Terms of Use say the company does not claim ownership of your inputs or outputs and does not restrict commercial use of outputs. That applies on every plan, including Free. Copyright protection for AI output is a separate question your lawyer should answer.

Does Runway train on my videos?

On self serve plans, yes. The Terms of Use let Runway use inputs and outputs to train and improve its models. Enterprise contracts state that Runway does not train on your data.

What is the difference between Gen-4.5 and Aleph?

Gen-4.5 generates new clips of 2 to 10 seconds from text or an image. Aleph 2.0 edits video you already have: change a product color, remove objects or restyle a scene across up to 30 seconds while keeping the rest of the footage.

How much does the Runway API cost?

API credits cost $0.01 each. Gen-4.5 is 12 credits per second ($0.12), Gen-4 Turbo is 5 ($0.05), Aleph 2 is 28 ($0.28, 56 credit minimum) and Veo 3.1 with audio is 40 ($0.40), per the developer pricing page.

Is Runway worth it?

For agencies and editors who need AI edits on real footage, yes: Aleph 2.0 and 4K upscaling have few equals. For hobbyists who want lots of cheap clips, Pika or Luma give more seconds per dollar on entry plans.
