How resolutions are counted
Zendesk moved new accounts to resolution tiers on May 18, 2026. Under the new rules, every AI conversation lands in one of three tiers:
- Assisted escalation. The AI collected details or routed the customer, but a human finished the job. Not charged.
- Contained resolution. The customer did not ask for more help, but the LLM check could not confirm the issue was solved. Not charged.
- Verified resolution. The customer did not ask for more help and an LLM confirmed the request was resolved. Charged against your allowance.
When a conversation ends depends on the channel: 72 hours after the first email, 2 hours after the first message on messaging by default (up to 72 hours on request), and at hang up on voice. Accounts created before May 18, 2026 stay on the older platform, where any request resolved without escalation counts, until they move. Check which one you are on before you model costs.
This is one of the stricter billing definitions in the category. Intercom bills Fin for assumed resolutions when a customer leaves without asking for more; Zendesk now bills only what passes verification.
Worked examples
All examples use annual seat pricing unless noted and assume every AI resolution passes verification.
| Team | Plan | Agents | AI resolutions a month | Math | Monthly bill |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Email only startup | Support Team, monthly | 2 | 50 | $50 seats + 40 extra x $2.00 | $130 |
| Small support team | Suite Team | 5 | 300 | $275 seats + 275 extra x $1.50 | $687.50 |
| Same team, pay as you go | Suite Team | 5 | 300 | $275 seats + 275 x $2.00 | $825 |
| Mid size team | Suite Professional | 20 | 2,000 | $2,300 seats + 1,800 x $1.50 | $5,000 |
| Mid size team with Copilot | Suite Professional | 20 | 2,000 | $5,000 + 20 x $50 | $6,000 |
Two patterns stand out. First, the included allowance is small: five agents on Suite Team get 25 resolutions a month, so almost every AI resolution is billed at full price. Second, seats dominate the bill until your AI volume is high. At 20 agents, the $2,300 in seats is close to the $2,700 in resolutions.
Hidden costs to plan for
- Pay as you go premium. $2.00 against $1.50 committed is a 33% markup. Commit once your volume is predictable.
- Copilot. Agent assist features such as suggested replies sit in a $50 per agent add on, more than Suite Team's annual seat.
- Voice AI. AI agents for voice require Zendesk voice and Contact Center at $83 per agent per month for full contact center features.
- Action Builder. Integrations that let the AI take actions draw on action credits; heavy use costs $200 per 100,000 actions beyond your allowance.
- QA. AI quality assurance across all conversations requires the QA add on.
How Zendesk compares per resolution
| Product | Price per AI resolution | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| Freshdesk Freddy AI | $0.49 per session after a one time 500 | $19 to $89 per agent billed annually |
| HubSpot Customer Agent | $0.50 | Service Hub from $100 per seat |
| Gorgias | $0.85 to $1.00 plus a ticket | None, billed by ticket |
| Intercom Fin | $0.99 per outcome | $29 to $132 annual, none standalone |
| Zendesk AI agents | $1.50 committed, $2.00 pay as you go | $19 to $115 annual |
Zendesk is the most expensive per resolution on this list. What you get in return is the deepest omnichannel helpdesk, 80+ languages and a verification step that keeps you from paying for weak answers. All tracked prices are on the AI Price Index, and you can model your own volume in the Bot cost calculator.
How to keep the bill down
- Buy committed resolutions once you know your monthly volume.
- Use light agents for occasional contributors; they do not need full seats.
- Start AI on your top five intents, then expand; every failed answer that escalates costs nothing, but every verified one is billed.
- Pause AI agents when you hit your allowance if you want a hard cap; Zendesk lets you do that.
Is Zendesk worth it?
For teams already on Zendesk with five or more agents and several channels, the AI agents are the natural choice: no migration, verified billing and the same inbox. For small teams or anyone price shopping per resolution, Fin standalone, HubSpot or Freshdesk cost less. Read the full Zendesk AI agents review or compare Zendesk alternatives.

Frequently asked questions
How much do Zendesk AI agents cost?
AI agents are included with every Suite and Support plan. You pay per agent seat ($19 to $115 billed annually, $25 to $149 billed monthly) and get 5 or 10 automated resolutions per agent per month. Beyond that, each automated resolution costs $1.50 on a committed volume or $2.00 pay as you go.
What is an automated resolution in Zendesk?
An automated resolution is a customer request the AI agent resolves without escalation to a human. Under the resolution tiers introduced May 18, 2026, an LLM reviews the conversation after it ends and only verified resolutions draw from your allowance. Assisted escalations and contained resolutions that fail verification are not charged.
When does a Zendesk conversation count as ended?
Per Zendesk's help center, email conversations end 72 hours after the first email, messaging conversations 2 hours after the first message by default (extendable to 72 hours), and voice calls at hang up.
Do unused Zendesk resolutions roll over?
Included resolutions are allocated per year and expire annually or at the end of your subscription term, with a cap of 10,000 a year. Light agents are not counted when Zendesk calculates your allowance.
Is Zendesk cheaper billed annually?
Yes. Annual billing is 20% off: Support Team $19 against $25, Suite Team $55 against $69 and Suite Professional $115 against $149 per agent per month. Resolution prices are the same either way.
Does Zendesk have a free trial?
Yes. The 14 day trial gives you Suite Professional with Copilot included by default. AI features are available in the trial for evaluation, though Zendesk says capabilities may vary.
Is Zendesk more expensive than Intercom Fin?
Per resolution, yes: $1.50 to $2.00 against Fin's $0.99 per outcome. Zendesk includes a small allowance per agent and its seats bundle a full omnichannel helpdesk, so the total depends on your agent count and resolution volume.
