Botpress is the best builder for developers and agencies who want a customer facing chat agent they fully control, with a free plan for 100 conversations and Plus at $150 a month billed annually for 250. The tradeoffs: paid plans are shown with annual billing only, overage packs add themselves automatically, and you build the support logic instead of switching on a finished helpdesk agent.

By Botpress

Botpress is a builder first: a free plan with 100 conversations, then $150 a month (billed annually) for 250 conversations at $0.65 each beyond that. You get full control and unlimited agents, but you build the support flows yourself instead of switching on a ready made helpdesk agent.

What it is

Botpress is a platform for building AI agents that talk to people: website chat, WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Slack and Microsoft Teams. It has been building conversational AI for about 10 years and says 750,000 AI agents have been built on it.

The core pieces, according to its docs:

  • Studio. A visual builder with workflows, nodes and cards that hold your conversation logic.
  • Autonomous Node. An LLM powered node that decides what to say and which tools to call inside a workflow.
  • Knowledge Base and Tables. Documents, websites and structured data the agent can search and update.
  • HITL. Human in the loop handoff, so a live agent can take over a conversation with context.
  • ADK. A code first Agent Development Kit for teams that prefer to build in their editor.
  • Webchat. An embeddable chat widget with a React library.

Botpress also sells a built and managed service, where its team builds a support, lead generation or product recommendation agent for you, and a Botpress Desk helpdesk option.

Pricing explained

Botpress bills on two meters, conversations and AI spend, plus storage.

Plan Price Conversations a month AI spend included Extra conversations Seats Agents
Free $0 100 Included, with a usage meter Not offered 3 3
Plus $150 a month billed annually 250 $25 $65 per pack of 100 3 Unlimited
Team $750 a month billed annually 1,500 $150 $50 per pack of 100 Unlimited Unlimited
Enterprise Custom Custom Custom Custom Unlimited Unlimited

The pricing page shows no monthly billing price for Plus or Team, so budget on the annual commitment: $1,800 a year for Plus and $9,000 a year for Team.

What each plan adds. Plus adds whitelabel webchat, a custom domain for the help center and live chat technical support. Team adds teams and role based access, team analytics and unlimited seats. Enterprise adds the voice channel, an uptime SLA, a security review and a dedicated support engineer.

Storage.

Storage Free Plus Team
Table rows 1,000 100,000 500,000
Vector storage 100 MB 1 GB 5 GB
File storage 100 MB 10 GB 50 GB

A storage add-on costs $40 a month for 100,000 more table rows, 1 GB of vector storage and 10 GB of file storage.

How a conversation is counted

Botpress counts any exchange with at least two messages from the end user in the billing month. A one line "hi" from a visitor who leaves does not count; a two message question does. On voice, 3 minutes is one conversation.

Overage rules

At 95% of your quota, Botpress adds a pack of 100 conversations automatically. You get warnings at 75% and 100%. The auto recharge cannot be disabled, and unused conversations in a pack expire at month end. AI spend works the same way: at 95% of the AI limit, Botpress buys a $10 credit grant at cost, and those grants carry over for up to 12 months.

Worked examples

  • 600 conversations a month on Plus. 250 included plus 350 extra. Packs auto add at 95% of quota, so plan on 4 packs at $65, which is $260. Total about $410 a month, or $0.68 per conversation.
  • Plus vs Team break even. Team costs $600 more than Plus. That buys about 9 Plus packs, so Plus stays cheaper up to roughly 1,150 conversations a month. Above about 1,200, Team at $750 for 1,500 conversations wins, and it adds unlimited seats.
  • 2,000 conversations a month on Team. 1,500 included plus 500 extra at $50 per 100, so $250. Total about $1,000 a month, or $0.50 per conversation.
  • Heavy AI use. If long answers from a frontier model burn through the $25 on Plus, each extra $10 grant is charged at cost, so add your expected model spend on top of the conversation math.

Per conversation, that lands between $0.50 and $0.68 at these volumes. Compare that with per resolution pricing on helpdesk agents in the AI Price Index.

Key features

Autonomous Node and workflows

You mix fixed steps (collect an order number, check a table) with the Autonomous Node, which reads the conversation and picks the next action. That hybrid matters in support, where refunds need exact rules but questions need flexible answers.

Knowledge Base

Add documents, website pages and tables, then tune retrieval with the optimization tools in the docs. Storage limits on each plan cap how much you can index, so a large help center may need the $40 add-on.

Channels

The Hub lists 50+ integrations, including WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord and Instagram, plus an embeddable Webchat. Free already includes Webchat and WhatsApp. Voice is the gap: it is an Enterprise feature.

Human handoff

HITL lets a person take over with the full transcript, and the docs cover measuring human response time. The homepage describes escalation rules, fallback logic and OAuth connections to existing helpdesks such as Zendesk and HubSpot.

Developer tools

The ADK is a code first framework for conversations, workflows, tools and tests, alongside a full API and support for custom LLMs. This is the strongest reason developers pick Botpress over no code chat builders.

Unlimited agents

Plus and Team allow unlimited agents. An agency can run many client bots under one workspace and pay only for conversations, as long as the 3 seat limit on Plus fits the team.

What users say

Botpress shows 4.5 stars from 514 reviews on G2 (October 2026; G2 blocked our fetch on October 19, so this is the figure recorded on October 18). Its Trustpilot profile is unclaimed with no reviews.

G2 blocked page fetches during this update, so we could not reread individual reviews. Read the published facts against the most common buyer concerns instead:

  • Flexibility. Visual flows plus the Autonomous Node, the ADK and custom LLMs give developers more control than most chat builders.
  • Free plan. 100 conversations a month is enough to build and test a real agent before paying.
  • Channel coverage. One agent on web, WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Slack and Teams.
  • Learning curve. Studio has many concepts (workflows, nodes, cards, tables, knowledge bases), so non technical owners should budget setup time or use the built and managed service.
  • Cost forecasting. Two meters plus packs that add themselves make bills harder to predict than a flat seat price.

Privacy and security

  • Certifications. The homepage lists SOC 2 and GDPR compliance and penetration testing by KPMG.
  • Hosting. The platform runs on AWS with automatic scaling. There is no self hosted option for the current platform.
  • Enterprise. A security review and an uptime SLA come with Enterprise only.
  • Model training. The pages we opened do not state a training opt out. Custom LLM support lets you route calls through your own provider account if you need your own data terms.
  • HIPAA. We did not find HIPAA listed, so regulated health use needs a direct answer from sales.

Who it is for

  • Developers and agencies building custom chat agents for web and messaging apps.
  • Small businesses that want a website or WhatsApp bot and can start on the free plan.
  • Teams with custom flows such as order lookups, bookings or lead qualification that need exact rules plus AI answers.
  • Multi bot setups, since paid plans allow unlimited agents.

Who should skip it

  • Support teams that want a turnkey agent. Intercom Fin and Zendesk AI agents plug into your existing helpdesk with less build work.
  • Phone and voice use cases. Voice is Enterprise only; Voiceflow, Vapi and ElevenLabs Agents cover phone calls.
  • Back office automation. If the agent never talks to a customer, Zapier, Make or n8n fit better.
  • Buyers who need monthly billing. Paid plans are priced annually.
  • Anyone who must self host. The current platform is cloud only.

Verdict

Botpress is the strongest self serve builder for customer facing chat agents when you want control: a real free plan, unlimited agents on paid plans, published per conversation rates and a code first ADK. It earns its place as our pick for chat agents in the agent builder ranking.

Plan the bill before you scale. Budget the annual commitment, expect packs to add themselves at 95% of quota, and move to Team once you pass about 1,200 conversations a month. If you need voice on a self serve plan or a helpdesk agent with no build work, look at Voiceflow or Intercom Fin instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is Botpress free?

Yes, there is a permanent Free plan with 100 conversations a month, 3 AI agents, 3 seats and AI usage included, with community support on Discord. It includes Studio, Webchat and WhatsApp. Paid plans start at $150 a month billed annually.

How much does Botpress cost?

Free is $0 for 100 conversations. Plus is $150 a month billed annually for 250 conversations and $25 of AI spend, then $65 per 100 extra conversations. Team is $750 a month billed annually for 1,500 conversations and $150 of AI spend, then $50 per 100. Enterprise is custom.

What counts as a Botpress conversation?

Botpress counts any exchange with at least two messages from the end user in the billing month. A visitor who says hello once and leaves does not count. On voice, 3 minutes equals one conversation.

What happens when I go over my Botpress conversation limit?

At 95% of your quota Botpress automatically adds a pack of 100 conversations ($65 on Plus, $50 on Team). You get warnings at 75% and 100%, the auto recharge cannot be switched off, and unused pack conversations expire at month end.

Is Botpress worth it?

For developers and agencies who want full control of a customer chat agent across web, WhatsApp and Messenger, yes, and the free plan lets you build before you pay. For a support team that wants a ready made helpdesk agent with no build work, a tool like Intercom Fin or Zendesk AI is quicker to switch on.

Can you self host Botpress?

Not the current platform. Self hosting applies to the older open source v12 release; the current Botpress runs as a cloud service on AWS. If self hosting is a must, n8n's Community Edition is the closest agent builder that runs on your own servers.

Does Botpress support voice agents?

Only on Enterprise. The voice channel is not included on Free, Plus or Team, and Botpress bills 3 minutes of voice as one conversation. For phone agents on a self serve plan, Voiceflow, Vapi or ElevenLabs Agents are better fits.

Is Botpress or Voiceflow better?

Botpress is better for budgets and developers: it publishes prices, has a free plan and a code first ADK. Voiceflow is better for voice and contact center teams, with phone deployment, Twilio, Vonage and Telnyx support and HIPAA listed, but no published prices.
