Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Chatbase is the fastest way to put a custom AI agent trained on your own content on your website, WhatsApp, Slack or phone line in October 2026. Plans run $40 to $500 a month with 700 to 15,000 message credits, you pick the model, and Chatbase says it never trains on your data. The tradeoff: credits per reply vary by model and actions, so costs are harder to predict.

Chatbase is the fastest way to put a GPT style agent trained on your own content on a website, with model choice and actions. It is not a helpdesk, and message credits scale with model choice and actions, so per conversation cost is harder to predict than per resolution pricing.

What it is
Chatbase is a no code platform for building customer facing AI agents. You connect data sources (files, websites, documents, past tickets on Pro), write instructions and guardrails, choose a model, add actions, test, then publish to chat, email, WhatsApp, Slack, Messenger, Instagram or voice. Chatbase positions one agent for support, sales and product guidance, and says it is trusted by more than 10,000 brands.
It began as a "chat with your docs" builder and has grown into a support product: procedures written in plain language, interactive widgets inside replies, a helpdesk shared by the AI and humans, and an analysis layer called Backstage that you can ask about customer issues.
Pricing explained
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly (per month) | Message credits a month | Seats | AI actions per agent | Training text |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby | $40 | $32 | 700 | 2 | 5 | 10 MB |
| Standard | $150 | $120 | 4,000 | 3 | 8 | 20 MB |
| Pro | $500 | $400 | 15,000 | 5 | 12 | 40 MB |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Committed credits, conversations or resolutions | Custom | Custom | Higher limits |
Each plan includes one agent. Add ons are $40 per 1,000 extra credits (auto recharge, non expiring), $300 per extra agent per year and $1,188 per year to remove "Powered by Chatbase." Credits renew on the 1st of each calendar month, whatever day you subscribed. Each plan also includes test credits (200, 500 or 1,000) for trying the agent.
What a credit buys
Chatbase's docs list credit costs per request by model. A sample:
| Model | Credits per request |
|---|---|
| Chatbase Auto, GPT-4o Mini, GPT-6 Luna, Claude 5.5 Haiku, Gemini 3 Flash, DeepSeek V4 Flash | 1 |
| Claude 5.5 Sonnet, GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Grok 4.7 | 2 |
| GPT-5.5 | 4 |
| Claude 5.5 Opus | 5 |
A plain answer is one request. If the agent runs an action, such as fetching calendar slots before booking, that reply takes two or more requests. So 700 Hobby credits are 700 simple replies on a 1 credit model, or about 140 on Opus, fewer with actions.
At Standard's monthly price, a credit costs $0.0375. A support conversation of four replies on a 1 credit model costs about 15 cents. That is far below Intercom Fin at $0.99 per outcome or Tidio Lyro at $0.70 to $0.78 per conversation, but you also get less helpdesk around it. Full math is on Chatbase pricing.
Key features
Model choice
Chatbase's model list runs to roughly 30 options across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, xAI, Mistral, Moonshot and Zhipu, including open weight GPT-OSS models. You can pick a cheap fast model for FAQs and a stronger one for reasoning. No other tool in our chatbot hub gives this much control on a $40 plan.
Knowledge sources
Agents train on files, websites and documents, up to 10 MB, 20 MB or 40 MB of extracted text by plan. Standard and Pro auto resync sources so the agent stays current, Pro suggests new sources and can use past tickets as a source.
Procedures and actions
Procedures are step by step instructions in plain language ("ask for the order number, use lookup_order, check the return window"). Actions connect the agent to tools, with 5 to 12 per agent by plan. Integrations listed include Stripe, Calendly, Zendesk, Slack and Zapier, and Enterprise gets custom actions built by Chatbase's team.
Helpdesk and human handoff
From Standard, a helpdesk inbox lets the AI and your team work the same conversation, with statuses and ticket details. It is a lighter inbox than Zendesk or Tidio, with 3 or 5 seats.
Channels and voice
Chatbase deploys to a website widget, email, WhatsApp, Slack, Messenger and Instagram. Voice and telephony start on Standard with 10 concurrent calls and 20 on Pro. Outbound campaigns also start on Standard.
Widgets and personalization
Agents can reply with interactive components, such as an order status card, instead of plain text. Personalization, which uses verified user variables so customers only see their own data, starts on Standard.
Testing and analytics
You can run scenario tests before launch with test credits. Standard adds advanced integrations and API access; Pro adds advanced analytics and source suggestions. Backstage lets you ask questions about customer issues across conversations.
What users say
Chatbase holds 4.0 on Trustpilot from 70 reviews and 4.8 on G2 from 46. On Trustpilot, about 57% of reviews are five stars and 27% one star. Praise centers on how easy it is to set up and on fast, helpful support. Complaints cover trouble reaching a human at Chatbase, integrations and customization that did not meet expectations, and at least one billing complaint about charges after a closure request. The review base is small for a product of its reach, so weigh it lightly.
Privacy and security
Chatbase lists SOC 2 Type II, GDPR compliance and HIPAA, with data encrypted at rest and in transit. Its pricing FAQ is direct: Chatbase does not use customer data to train, retrain, fine tune or otherwise improve any AI model, on any plan, and HIPAA enabled accounts are covered by zero data retention. SSO, audit logs, custom roles and the HIPAA eligible configuration are Enterprise features.
Because you choose the model, your data also flows to that model's provider through Chatbase. Check which providers your plan and model use if you have data residency requirements.

Who should skip it

- Buyers who need a fixed per resolution price; credit use moves with model and actions
- Anyone who needs many agents on a small budget; each extra agent is $300 a year
Alternatives
- Tidio: live chat plus Lyro AI with a free plan and Shopify actions; see Tidio vs Chatbase

Verdict
Chatbase is the best value AI agent builder for businesses that want the AI to do most of the work. Model choice, actions, voice from Standard and a firm no training policy are strong at $40 to $500 a month. It is not a full helpdesk, credit costs swing with model and actions, and the add ons for extra agents and branding add up. Start on Standard if you need humans in the loop or voice, use a 1 credit model for routine questions, and measure credits per conversation in the first month before scaling.

Is Chatbase good?
On published facts, yes for building an AI agent from your own content quickly. You get model choice from dozens of LLMs, actions, a shared helpdesk inbox on Standard and up, voice, and a clear no training policy. It is weaker as a full helpdesk, and credit based billing is harder to predict than per conversation or per resolution pricing.
How much does Chatbase cost?
Hobby is $40 a month for 700 message credits, Standard $150 for 4,000 and Pro $500 for 15,000, billed monthly. Billed yearly they are $32, $120 and $400 a month. Extra credits are $40 per 1,000, extra agents $300 a year, and removing branding $1,188 a year. Enterprise is custom.
How do Chatbase message credits work?
Each request to the AI model costs credits by model: 1 for Chatbase Auto, GPT-4o Mini or Claude 5.5 Haiku, 2 for Claude 5.5 Sonnet or Gemini 3.1 Pro, 4 for GPT-5.5 and 5 for Claude 5.5 Opus. If an action runs, the agent may make two or more requests for one reply, multiplying the credits.
Does Chatbase have a free plan?
The pricing page shows no free plan. Every paid plan has a 7 day trial.
Does Chatbase train on my data?
No. Chatbase's FAQ says it does not use customer data to train, retrain, fine tune or improve any AI model on any plan, and HIPAA enabled accounts get zero data retention.
Can Chatbase hand off to a human?
Yes. Standard and Pro include a helpdesk where the AI and your team work in the same conversation, and Chatbase also integrates with Zendesk. Hobby has no helpdesk inbox.
Can Chatbase answer phone calls?
Yes. Voice and telephony are included on Standard with 10 concurrent calls and on Pro with 20.
What are the best Chatbase alternatives?
Tidio for small businesses that need live chat and a free plan, Intercom Fin for AI billed only on outcomes, Crisp for a flat priced inbox and Voiceflow or Botpress for teams that want to design complex agent flows.
