The short answer

  • Choose Claude for long documents, research synthesis and code, with Claude Code bundled and Microsoft 365 support on Pro.
  • Choose Copilot if you spend your day in Excel, PowerPoint and Teams or need to buy Office anyway.
  • Developers should pick Claude; Microsoft's coding agent, GitHub Copilot, is a separate purchase.

Pricing

Tier Claude Microsoft Copilot

Enterprise $20 per seat annually plus API usage, 20 seat minimum Not listed on the pages we compared

At the standard tier the sticker prices match to the cent on annual billing. What you get differs: Microsoft spends part of the $19.99 on Office apps and 2 TB of shared storage on Premium. Claude spends it all on AI and includes Claude Code.

For teams, check the prerequisite. The Copilot Business add-on requires an existing qualifying Microsoft 365 Business license, so its real cost is the add-on plus the base license. The $18 promo ends December 31, 2026. Claude Team has no prerequisite and its seats include Claude Code.

Head to head scenarios

Building a deck or financial model

Winner: Copilot. It works inside PowerPoint and Excel, where the file already lives, and Analyst handles spreadsheet questions on Premium. Claude can analyze an uploaded spreadsheet with code execution, but it does not list Excel or PowerPoint integration.

Writing long reports and proposals

Winner: Claude. Up to 1M tokens of context, Projects and Research on Pro suit long writing, and Claude now drafts in Outlook and Microsoft 365 too. Copilot does not publish a context size.

Coding

Winner: Claude. Claude Code is part of every paid plan. Copilot's consumer and Microsoft 365 plans do not include a coding agent.

Meeting and Teams follow ups

Winner: Copilot. It is built into Teams, and Copilot Business adds the Facilitator agent. Claude does not list Teams integration.

A team on Google Workspace or mixed tools

Winner: Claude. It does not require any Microsoft license, connects through connectors and MCP, and Team seats cost $20 annually. Copilot's value depends on being inside Microsoft 365.

Privacy

Microsoft's support page states that prompts, responses and file contents with Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps for home are not used to train foundation models, and turning off connected experiences disables Copilot in the apps. Business plans add Enterprise Data Protection.

Claude lists model training as opt out on Free, Pro and Max, and no training by default on Team and Enterprise. Enterprise adds SCIM, audit logs, custom retention and a HIPAA ready offering.

Verdict

Claude is the better assistant for writing, analysis and code, and its Microsoft 365 support on Pro means you no longer have to leave Outlook to use it. Microsoft Copilot is the better buy if Excel, PowerPoint and Teams are where you work, or if you need Office anyway. Many Microsoft shops end up with Copilot for the suite and Claude for heavy writing and coding.
