What each plan includes
Copilot app (free) gives Copilot chat, voice and image creation with base usage on the web, Windows and mobile.
Personal ($9.99) adds Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote with "advanced Copilot chat with higher usage than free," plus 1 TB of OneDrive storage and Microsoft Defender for one person on up to 5 devices.
Family ($12.99) shares Office and 2 TB of storage with up to 6 people. Copilot usage matches Personal but only for the owner.
Premium ($19.99) moves Copilot to "extensive usage" for chat, image creation and visual assistance, and adds Researcher, Analyst, Cowork, AI Restyle photo editing and limited agentic AI, again for the owner only, with Office and 2 TB for the household.
Pro ($99.99) gives the highest usage across all Copilot features including agentic AI, with 5 TB of shared storage. It is billed monthly only.
Copilot Business adds Work IQ, the Researcher, Analyst and Facilitator agents, reasoning models, model choice and adoption analytics on top of an existing Microsoft 365 Business plan. Microsoft lists the latest OpenAI models (GPT-5.X) with priority access.
What the limits mean in practice
Microsoft describes usage in words: higher than free, extensive, highest. It does not publish counts. In practice, Personal suits someone who asks Copilot for help in Word or Outlook a few times a day. Premium suits someone who runs Researcher reports or analyzes spreadsheets daily. Pro is for people who lean on agents for long, multi step work.
The free app has rate limits; Trustpilot reviewers frequently complain about them. If you hit pauses on the free app, Personal at $9.99 is the cheapest step up.
Hidden costs and fine print
- Owner only AI. On Family, Premium and Pro, the other five people get Office and storage, not Copilot. A household where two adults want Copilot needs two subscriptions or a different assistant.
- Promo expiry. The Copilot Business add-on is $18 through December 31, 2026, then $21 on yearly billing.
- Monthly business billing costs 20% more. The add-on is $25.20 monthly versus $21 yearly.
- Add-on requirement. Copilot Business needs an existing eligible Microsoft 365 Business plan, so the real per user cost is the add-on plus the base plan, or a bundle.
- Auto renewal. Microsoft notes subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled.
Cost math
| Scenario | Monthly billing | Yearly billing |
|---|---|---|
| One person, Personal | $119.88 per year | $99.99 per year |
| One person, Premium | $239.88 per year | $199.99 per year |
| One person, Pro | $1,199.88 per year | Not offered |
| 10 users, Business Standard with Copilot | $3,384 per year | $2,820 per year |
| 10 users, Business Premium with Copilot | $4,608 per year | $3,840 per year |
| 10 users, add-on only, 2026 promo | Not applicable | $2,160 per year |
On yearly billing, Personal works out to about $8.33 per month and Premium to about $16.67, which makes Premium cheaper than ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro on monthly billing, with Office included.
How it compares
| Assistant | Standard personal plan | Business seat |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Copilot | Premium, $19.99 ($199.99 yearly) | Add-on $21 yearly ($18 promo) |
| ChatGPT | Plus, $20 | Business, $20 annual |
| Claude | Pro, $20 ($17 annual) | Team, $20 annual |
| Gemini | AI Pro, $19.99 | Enterprise from $21 |
| Perplexity | Pro, $17 billed annually | Enterprise Pro, $34 annual |
Copilot is priced at the market, but what you get for the money differs: Office apps and storage rather than a bigger AI toolset. The BestBots AI Price Index lists the median standard plan at $19.99. Rival details are in ChatGPT pricing and Gemini pricing.
