Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Nano Banana is the best free AI image generator in our rankings: Nano Banana 2 runs in the free Gemini app with local edits, multi image blends and character consistency, and Google AI plans from $4.99 add 2K downloads and Nano Banana Pro. The tradeoffs are unpublished daily quotas, 1K free downloads and human review of some chats.

Nano Banana 2 is the strongest free image generator we compared: it runs in the free Gemini app with character consistency, local edits and solid text rendering, and Google AI plans add 2K downloads and Nano Banana Pro. The catches are daily quotas Google does not publish, 1K downloads on the free tier, and human review of some chats unless you change activity settings.

What it is
Nano Banana is Google's family of image generation and editing models, built into the Gemini app and offered in the Gemini API. In the app you type a request, pick a template, or upload images and describe edits. Google's help center lists the strengths of Nano Banana 2 as improved world knowledge for diagrams and infographics, character consistency across images, local edits, better text rendering in all supported languages, and stronger instruction following.
The app chooses the model from your Gemini setting:
- Nano Banana 2 Lite when the model is Flash-Lite: fastest, for quick ideas; not built for multiple references or multiple edits.
- Nano Banana 2 when the model is Flash or Pro: balanced quality, world knowledge and reliable text, with multiple reference images.
- Nano Banana Pro on paid plans, through Redo with Pro: the most world knowledge, advanced text and language ability, higher consistency and more precise control.
Pricing explained
Image generation is part of Gemini, so the price is the Google AI plan.
| Plan | Price | Image access | Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Nano Banana 2, 1K downloads | Standard limits |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99 per month | Nano Banana 2, 2K downloads, Redo with Nano Banana Pro | 2x standard |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 per month | Same, plus Pro model in chat | 4x standard |
| Google AI Ultra | $99.99 or $199.99 per month | Same | 5x or 20x AI Pro |
Plan prices from Google's subscriptions page and limits from the Gemini Apps limits page, October 2026.
The quota. Google does not publish a daily image count. Its limits page says multimedia requests "require a lot of thinking power" and use more allowance than chat, and that limits may change with testing or availability. If you hit your daily Nano Banana 2 quota, you cannot use Redo with Pro either.
Which plan to pick. If you only want sharper downloads and Nano Banana Pro, AI Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest paid plan in this category. AI Pro at $19.99 makes sense if you also want Gemini's Pro model, 5 TB of storage and Gemini in Gmail and Docs.
API pricing. On the Gemini API paid tier:
| Model | 1K image | 2K image | 4K image |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2.1 | $0.0336 | $0.0504 | $0.113 |
| Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) | $0.067 | $0.101 | $0.151 |
| Nano Banana 2 Lite | $0.0336 | Not listed | Not listed |
| Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) | $0.134 | $0.134 | $0.24 |
Batch mode halves these rates. Image models have no free API tier. Worked example: 1,000 product shots at 2K on Nano Banana 2.1 cost about $50.40, or $25.20 on Batch.

Key features
Local edits and blends
Upload an image and ask for a change: swap the background, change a shirt color, remove a person. Upload several images and Nano Banana will combine them into one scene. Google pitches this for personal edits like trying hairstyles or putting yourself in new scenes.
Character consistency
Nano Banana 2 is built to keep a person or character looking the same across generations. You can also record your face and voice to create an avatar, then reuse it without uploading a photo each time.
Text and infographics
Better spelling in images and stronger world knowledge make it a practical tool for diagrams, labeled infographics and simple posters. Nano Banana Pro is the pick when text or detail must be precise.
Google Photos connection
In the US, adults can connect Google Photos to the Gemini app and edit or transform their own photos directly. Personal Intelligence can tailor images to you if you meet Google's requirements.
Partner availability
Nano Banana models also appear inside other apps: Adobe Firefly lists Nano Banana on its free plan, and Ideogram offers Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro as premium partner models with up to 10 references and 4K output.
What users say
The Gemini app holds 4.7 on the App Store from over 2.35 million ratings and 4.4 on G2 from 635 reviews, both for Gemini as a whole. Trustpilot shows 1.4 from 1,379 reviews for gemini.google.com, mostly about refusals, quality swings and account issues. Common praise for images: realistic photo edits, keeping a face consistent, and that it is free. Common complaints: sudden daily limits with no counter, and refusals on edits of real people.
Commercial rights and copyright
From Google's Terms of Service: "Some of our services allow you to generate original content. Google won't claim ownership over that content." The same terms list prohibited conduct, including "misleading others into thinking that generative AI content was created by a human" and "using AI-generated content from our services to develop machine learning models or related AI technology." The Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy also applies.
Google's image help page adds: do not violate others' copyright or privacy rights, and "use your discretion before you rely on, publish, or use content." Work or school accounts may be under different terms. Google publishes no consumer IP indemnity for Gemini app images.
Privacy and security
The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Google uses Gemini Apps data to provide and improve its services, including generative models. A subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers, including trained service providers, and those reviewed chats are kept for up to three years even if you delete activity. The Keep Activity setting controls whether your future chats are used to improve Google AI. Google tells users not to enter confidential information they would not want a reviewer to see.
On the paid Gemini API, Google's pricing page lists prompts and outputs as not used to improve its products, while the free tier (for text models) is. Businesses using Gemini Enterprise get separate data terms.
Who it is for
- Anyone who wants a capable free image tool with no credit card.
- Photo editing of your own pictures, including Google Photos in the US.
- Developers who want low cost image generation at 1K to 4K.
- Google AI subscribers who already pay for storage or Gemini.
Who should skip it
- People who need guaranteed volume. Daily quotas are not published; use the API or Leonardo.Ai.
- Artists who want a distinctive style and taste profiles. Midjourney is stronger.
- Users under 18 who want to edit images, which Google does not allow.
- Brands that need indemnified output. See Adobe Firefly.
Alternatives
- ChatGPT Images: deeper conversational editing and images with thinking.
- Adobe Firefly: runs Nano Banana and Adobe's commercially safe models in one app.
- Ideogram: text heavy designs, also offers Nano Banana Pro.
- Leonardo.Ai: 150 free tokens a day across many models.
Verdict
Nano Banana earns the top spot for free image generation and second place overall: the free tier includes the full Nano Banana 2 model, AI Plus at $4.99 unlocks 2K and Nano Banana Pro, and the API undercuts GPT Image at 1K and 2K. It trails ChatGPT Images for most readers because conversational editing and thinking mode are more mature there, and because Google does not publish its quotas. How many images can I make with Gemini for free?
Google does not publish a number. Its help center describes standard limits for free users, 2x for AI Plus, 4x for AI Pro and 5x or 20x Pro limits for AI Ultra, and says media generation uses more of your allowance than chat. Can I use Gemini images commercially?
Google's Terms of Service say that when its services let you generate original content, Google won't claim ownership over it. Chats reviewed by humans are kept for up to three years even if you delete your activity. On the paid Gemini API, Google lists prompts as not used to improve its products.
