Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Gemini for Home is the best voice assistant for Google Nest households in October 2026. The Gemini assistant is free on speakers and displays Google made in the last decade, and Google Home Premium at $10 per month adds Gemini Live and AI automations. If you pay for Google AI Pro, that Premium plan is already included. The catch: the best features sit behind the subscription.

Gemini for Home is the best pick for Android and Nest households: Google brought it to speakers and displays going back a decade, and the base assistant costs nothing. The real upgrade, Gemini Live and camera search, sits behind Google Home Premium at $10 or $20 per month unless you already pay for Google AI Pro or Ultra.

What it is
Gemini for Home is Google's replacement for Google Assistant on Nest and Google Home speakers, smart displays, cameras and doorbells. Google announced it on October 1, 2025 with early access that month, a redesigned Google Home app, and a new speaker. By April 2026 Google said millions of people had opted in, and that it works across 16 or more languages. The Google Home Speaker, the first speaker designed for Gemini, launched on June 25, 2026 at $99.99.
It comes in two layers:
- The Gemini voice assistant, included with your device. It understands natural speech, takes several commands at once ("dim the lights and set the temp to 72"), answers complex questions, keeps context with Continued Conversation, and offers 10 new voices.
- Google Home Premium, a paid subscription that adds Gemini Live, Ask Home or Help me create automations, and Gemini powered camera features.
Pricing explained
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included | $0 | $0 | Gemini voice assistant on compatible speakers and displays |
| Google Home Premium Standard | $10 | $100 (save $20) | Gemini Live, Help me create automations, 30 days of event video, intelligent alerts |
| Google Home Premium Advanced | $20 | $200 (save $40) | Standard plus 60 days of event video, 10 days of 24/7 video, searchable history, event descriptions, daily summaries |
Bundles change the math. Google says Google AI Pro subscribers get Standard included and can move to Advanced for $10 more per month, and Google AI Ultra subscribers get Advanced at no extra cost. If you pay $19.99 per month for AI Pro for Gemini in Gmail and 5 TB of storage, Gemini Live on your speakers is free. See our Gemini review for those plans.
Nest Aware moved over. Nest Aware became Google Home Premium. Nest Aware subscribers were moved to Standard and Nest Aware Plus to Advanced with no billing change.
Billing quirks. A 30 day trial is available when you register a new household. Switching between monthly and annual means cancelling auto renewal, waiting out the cycle and subscribing again. Cancelling keeps service until the end of the billing period, so download clips first.
Worked example. A household with two Nest speakers and one camera that wants Gemini Live and a month of camera history pays $100 per year on annual Standard. The same household paying for Google AI Pro pays nothing extra. A household that only wants smarter voice commands pays $0.

Key features
Natural voice commands
The core upgrade over Google Assistant: you speak normally, chain requests, and follow up without restating context. Continued Conversation keeps the microphone open for a few seconds after a reply and works for everyone in the house, including guests, according to Google.
Gemini Live on speakers and displays
On Premium, you can say "let's chat" and have a free flowing, multi turn conversation without the wake word each time. Google pitches it for cooking help, troubleshooting, brainstorming and going deeper on a topic.
Help me create and Ask Home automations
Type or say what you want ("turn on the porch light at sunset when I'm away") and Gemini builds the automation in the Google Home app. This is part of Premium.
Gemini camera intelligence
Advanced adds AI event descriptions, Home Brief daily summaries and searchable video history ("did a package arrive today?"). Standard includes intelligent alerts for familiar faces, packages, garage doors and smoke or CO alarms. Speakers and displays can also detect glass breaking and smoke alarms.
Media and household coordination
Gemini handles media discovery and playback across streaming services, calendars and lists in natural language. The Google Home Speaker pairs with the Google TV Streamer for surround audio with up to two speakers.
Wide device support
Google says Gemini for Home comes to every speaker, display, camera and doorbell it made in the last decade, including Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub and Hub Max. That is the strongest backward compatibility story in this category.
What users say
The Google Home app holds 4.6 on the App Store from about 1.38 million ratings. That rating covers the whole app, not Gemini alone. Google reported that millions of households opted into early access.
Praise in Google's own materials and coverage centers on natural speech and fewer rigid commands. Complaints, based on Google's own notes, are about features varying by device and country, and the paywall on Gemini Live. We found no large independent rating for Gemini for Home specifically.
Privacy and security
Data from Nest devices used with a Google Account is handled under the Google Privacy Policy, per Google's FAQ. You can delete Nest Cam video history in settings and sound detection history in the Home app. Google Nest cameras and doorbells have status lights that show when they are recording.
Google does not publish a separate training opt out for Gemini for Home on its Premium page. Google's broader Gemini settings govern activity; check the Gemini Apps Activity controls in your Google Account. For the strictest privacy design, Siri with Private Cloud Compute is ahead.
Who it is for
- Nest and Google Home owners. Free upgrade on hardware you already have.
- Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Premium is included.
- Homes with Nest cameras and doorbells. The Advanced plan's searchable history and summaries are the best camera AI in this group.
- Android families who live in Google Calendar and Gmail.
Who should skip it
- Echo households on Prime. Alexa+ is free for you and does more errands. See Alexa+ vs Gemini for Home.
- iPhone first users. Siri AI is free on your phone. See Siri vs Gemini for Home.
- People who only want Gemini Live and nothing else. On a phone, Gemini Live is on the free Gemini plan; on speakers it costs $10 per month.
Alternatives
- Alexa+: best for partner errands and Echo homes, free with Prime.
- Siri: free, private, best on iPhone.
- Gemini: the same family of models on your phone, with free Gemini Live.
- ChatGPT: stronger standalone voice chat, no smart home control.
See the ranked list in best AI voice assistants.
Verdict
If your home runs on Nest speakers, Gemini for Home is a free upgrade worth turning on today, and if you already pay for Google AI Pro you get the Premium layer at no cost. For everyone else, decide whether Gemini Live and camera search are worth $100 a year. They are good features, but Alexa+ gives Prime members more for nothing.
