Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
If you have Prime and Echo devices, Alexa+ wins: it costs nothing, and it books, orders and calls rides through named partners. If your home runs on Nest speakers or you pay for Google AI Pro, Gemini for Home wins: the assistant is free on devices up to a decade old, and Premium is included with AI Pro. Do not switch hardware for either one.

Head to head scenarios
Prime household with Echo speakers
Winner: Alexa+. Everything is included at $0, on hardware you own.
Nest household without Prime
Winner: Gemini for Home. Free on your speakers, and $100 per year adds Gemini Live if you want it.
Ordering dinner and booking a ride by voice
Winner: Alexa+. It lists Grubhub, Uber Eats, Uber and OpenTable. Google lists no equivalent partners for Gemini for Home.
Home security cameras
Winner: Gemini for Home. On Advanced, you can search camera history by asking, read AI event descriptions and get a daily summary. Standard includes familiar face, package and smoke alarm alerts.
Long conversations on a speaker
Winner: Alexa+ for Prime members, Gemini for Home for AI Pro subscribers. Alexa+ includes free flowing chat for Prime members; Gemini Live on speakers needs Premium, which AI Pro includes.
Using it away from home
Winner: Alexa+. Alexa.com and the redesigned app share the same memory and lists. Gemini for Home's chat lives in the separate Gemini app, though Gemini Live is free there on a phone.
Setup and switching costs
Both assistants set themselves up on hardware you already own. Alexa+ turned on for Prime members through the Alexa app, and Amazon still lets you roll back to the original Alexa, per TechCrunch. Gemini for Home started as early access in the Google Home app (version 4.0 or later) in October 2025 and now ships on the Google Home Speaker. Nest Aware subscribers were moved to Google Home Premium automatically with no billing change.
Switching ecosystems is where the money goes. A new Google Home Speaker is $99.99, and Echo devices cost money too. Before you replace speakers, check that your lights, locks, thermostats and cameras work with the other platform, ideally through Matter. Camera history is another lock in: Nest camera features live in Google Home Premium, and Ring camera plans bill separately from Alexa+. In most homes, the cheapest move is to keep your speakers and switch on the upgrade your existing Prime or Google AI Pro subscription already covers.
Who should pick which
Prime member with Echo devices: Alexa+. Nest owner without Prime: Gemini for Home, free, adding Premium only if you want Gemini Live or camera search. Google AI Pro subscriber: Gemini for Home, because Premium Standard is included. Family that orders food and rides by voice: Alexa+. Home with several Nest cameras: Gemini for Home on Advanced.
Privacy
Both send voice requests to the cloud for AI features. Amazon removed Echo's local processing option on March 28, 2025, offers the Alexa Privacy dashboard to review and delete recordings, and paid a $25 million civil penalty in 2023 for keeping children's recordings. Google handles Nest data under the Google Privacy Policy, lets you delete Nest Cam video and sound detection history, and has status lights on cameras. Neither publishes a simple AI training opt out on its product page. If privacy decides it, Siri is ahead of both.
Verdict
This is a hardware and bundle decision, not a feature race. Alexa+ is the better assistant for errands and the better deal for Prime members. Gemini for Home is the better deal for Nest homes and Google AI Pro subscribers, and the stronger camera AI. Stay with the speakers you own, and turn on whichever upgrade your existing subscription already pays for. See all picks in best AI voice assistants.
